Amberkit didn't want to be an apprentice. He as probably the only kit that didn't. Most couldn't wait for the day, but this little bird just wanted to stay here, in his nest and never move. It was safe here, quiet, and Seablossom tended to his every need. Looking around the nursery, he could see everyone's excitement. Some were to be promoted, others were merely excited becuase the older ones were. It was nerve-racking for little Amberkit. Shouts, laughter, chaos erupted in the den, and the mothers could hardly contain it.
Graykit watched his brother, noting the nervousness in his body, smelling his fear scent. The gray tom, though small but still quite bigger than Amberkit, moved with much more care than he normally would as he saddled up next to his brother. "Aren't you excited, Amberkit?" He asked, a little shiver running up his spine at just the thought of being promoted to an apprentice. "We're about to be apprentices! No more wasting away in this nursery."

Desertkit had been sitting with her siblings the excitement buzzing through the nursery affecting every cat and she was no different, her body shook with energy, She spotted Graykit and Amberkit and practically ran to them. "Ya'll are so lucky you're going to be apprentices! Will you come and tell us all about it once you start staying in their den?" Her voice quivered as she could barley contain the excitement bubbling inside of her.
"I don't wanna be an apprentice though." Amberkit sunk further into his nest, surprising both the other two hovering near by. Seablossom had been shocked when he said the same thing to her the other day when the rumor of ceremonies began to circle through the nursery. The deputy had been shocked as well, and had no idea how to answer that. Every kit wanted to ab an apprentice, it was one step closer to being a warrior and they were finally allowed outside camp! But no, not Amberkit. That was the last thing he wanted to do.
Having woken up a little bit before, Cougarkit lay silently, his eyes closed in the blissfulness of morning. Voices filled his little ears--talk about becoming apprentices--but he ignored them for a few moments. Finally, he stretched, yawned, and slowly sat up.
"It's okay Amberkit!" He started, taking a deep, wheezy breath, "You'll do just fine." The thin-furred tom-kit stumbled from the nest to meet the other kits. He moved slowly, cautiously, and rather clumsily towards the others. He erupted in a coughing fit, the power of which shook his thin frame. "I w-w-anna be an apprentice too! But I've s-s-still got a bit to go." He laughed an airy laugh. "Do you think--" He paused, out of breath and wheezing, for a second, "Do you think I-I'll be a good apprentice?"
[ that... is the saddest question he could have asked with those little wheezes ]
"But why?" Graykit asked, surprised. "Me, you, and Wildkit will all get to train together, we can have lots of fun," he tried to reassure his brother. His fuzzy gray tail flicked back and forth in frustration, wanting his brother to be an apprentice with him. "I mean, you have to become an apprentice, right? You can't just stay a kit forever. Seablossom will make you train." He looked up at Cougarkit, hearing the younger tom wheeze and cough. "Of course you will, Cougarkit," he told his denmate, hoping that he was right.
"I don't wanna train. I just wanna stay here." Didn't they understand? He didn't like heights, didn't like going outside, didn't like bugs. So what would be so great about being an apprentice? Amberkit just didn't understand it. Seablossom wouldn't really make him train. Right? Amberkit became a little worried, nearly missing Cougarkit come over and speak. His nephew, weird to say when you were both kits, wanted to be a warrior and was sickly. Oh, how he wished the tables were turned ta that he was the sickly kit.
“Yeah! Being a kit is bo-o-airing!” He crept behind Amberkit and batted at his tail with his little paws. “You can’t be a kit forever.” He turned his head away and sneezed. “If you want I could take your place Amberkit! I’d be my pleasure.” He smirked playfully.
”I don't know about you, but I’m starving!” He sat down and licked his paw, feeling a rumble in his stomach. Though, he knew his stomach wouldn’t hold down more than a few mouthfuls at a time. “When you guys become apprentices, I’m gonna miss you. You have to come back every day and tell me about it, and teach me things! Like how to fight.”
"I can't wait to show you all of the things that I'll learn," Graykit puffed out his chest. "I hope I get a good mentor. One that knows how to fight really good and hunt like a lion!" The little gray tom had big dreams. He looked down at his brother, trying to sympathize, though he couldn't stir up the emotion. He just couldn't see what was so great about being a kit. "I'm sure you'll like it once you try it, Amberkit," he tried to reassure him.

Desertkit had opted for sitting and listening to the others, she wanted to be an apprentice but knew she had a while to go. Her mind buzzed as she tried to wrap her head around Amberkits words, he had always seemed content here in the nursery but then it wasn't a bad place to be, still though he would have more freedom once he left and especially when he was finally made a warrior. The small she-kit stood up and pushed past Graykit and Couragekit until she stood beside Amberkit, her sandy pelt smooth as she gently touched his shoulder with her tail tip. "It'll be alright Amberkit, you can always come back to the nursery to spend time here. We will miss you too much if you don't." She was trying to be encouraging and supportive of his ill feelings but as a kit she did not fully understand all of it, she tried her best though.
“I’ll just hide here. They won’t find me if sleep all the way in the back.” A solid plan, right? Amberkit though so, even felt that it would work. Surely, Seablossom wouldn’t think yo look back there in the dark. But....he didn’t like the dark. Maybe that wouldn’t work.
Deerpaw woke to the chatter of kits. While she would soon have her own, and had lived in this den only a few short moons ago, the sandy furred cat wasn’t use toso much talk so early in the morning. Apprentices were either still asleep or quietly leaving. Kits, oh how it amazed her how early they’d get up. But they crashed sooner too, a blessing if she ever knew one. “What are you littles ones up too?”
"Amberkit doesn't want to be an apprentice," Graykit told Deerpaw, his ears back as he tried to think of a way to make his brother change his mind. He blinked a thank you at Desertkit for trying to make him feel better, though Graykit knew that it was to no avail. "You might just wait and see. You'll wind up loving it, I bet."
"I bet I won't." Amberkit pouted, rising from his spot in the nest. The tom settled his slightly ruffed fur back into place, grooming it as he went. "I don't see what' so great about being an apprentice. You get sweaty and dirty and gross, and you have to kill things! Plus, there's battles. No. I'm perfectly fine living right here in the nursery."
“Amberkit is being a scardey-cat!” Cougarkit taunted playfully. “Come on, you’ll be fine! I’d love to be an apprentice right now.” He said, thinking ahead to what he imagined his apprentice days to be like. No sicknesses, no rules, no confinement to camp. “When you become apprentices can you take me out camp with you?”
"Well... How else are you supposed to get prey for the clan?" Graykit frowned, watching his brother with a confused gaze. "You have to kill things, yes, but it's just prey. And battles don't happen very often. Even if they do, you should feel proud to fight for such a strong clan!"
"No, because I won't be leaving camp." Did the brat understand? Amberkit wasn't becoming an apprentice! Seablossom couldn't make him, his mentor couldn't make him leave camp. What was so great about the rest of the territory? Of hunting? Fighting? Climbing trees?! "No! That's all horrible! I won't do it! I won't!"
Deerpaw didn't know what to do. Amberkit didn't want to be an apprentice? Every kit wanted to be one. She'd wanted to be one bad enough she'd snuck out of camp on multiple occasions. Her eyes searched for someone else, someone much older than her that could defusion this situation. Her mother? Seablossom? No, she was out of camp at the moment. Maybe Almondrose was nearby? Or Applecrisp? Surly his older siblings could talk some sense into the kit. Moving as quickly as her pregnant form would allow, the she-cat searched out the nursery entrance for some help, anyone more adult than her.
