Landon rested at the edge of the river, one paw dangling in the depths as he watched absently for fish to swim near. It had been a long time since he had lived here as Dragonguard, but he could never forget the muggy wind and soft roar and long reeds of his homeland. Returning was like stepping into the past. He could see himself hunting and patrolling alongside his clanmates once more, laughing and smiling, but he knew it was just a distant memory and rejoining the clan would never be the haven he imagined. Besides, he was happy with his new life, with his new family. The former deputy didn't need his clan anymore.
A minnow swam too close to his pad and in a flash he hooked it, pulling it up onto the shore and ending it quickly. His silvered whiskers twitched as the black tom rolled it away from the edge. "Still a hunter, then," he mused to himself with a fierce grin. "Good."

"Landon, are you okay?" Squirrelpool was usually the chipper one, but a load of kits had weighed down her spirit. Or was it her abusive mate? No one could really tell nowadays. The she-cat hardly talked to her own family now. She was too embarrassed to face her uncle, Chimerastar. Before, he had been the one she would go to first. She let out a sigh and trotted over to join Landon. "Hey, good catch." She teased weakly.
He looked at his niece and smiled, patting the ground beside him for her to join. "I'm great, truly," he promised. And he was. He had a new home, a new mother-in-law and a mate and two sons, and even with the recent passing of his mother he knew everything would be okay. He was relaxed and happy and he owed that to the family he had found. He watched her carefully, and he could see she didn't quite feel the same about her own family, though he wasn't involved enough in the clan to see why.

Squirrelpool padded forward shyly, which was unusual for her. She sat down beside Landon and wrapped her tail around her paws as if it could protect the pride that lingered like a small flame in her chest. She was surprised that he even wanted to talk to her. She had told herself so many times now that many of her family members wouldn't want anything to do with her now. "It's just..." She started with a sigh. "I made a mistake being with Smokeynight..." Her eyes sank to her paws in shame once more.
The ebony tom purred softly, sounding amused. "And now you're wondering just how badly you've messed up? If our family will ever forgive you?" he suggested. He placed his paw on top of hers, reassuring. "They will. We all make mistakes, Squirrelpool, don't worry; your life isn't over."

Her eyes widened in surprise at how much he truly understood what she meant. It almost shocked her speechless, which was really a surprise considering who she was. She fumbled for words for a moment and whined. "But Uncle Chim will never forgive me! Smokeynight adored Riverstar!" Her eyes were round with distress at the thought of never being close to the grumpy orange tom again. It was reassuring to know that she had a chance with the others. "...and Aunt Rusty..." She sighed, remembering how distraught she had been when Riverstar took over.
Landon cocked his head. "Look, Chim... likes to hold a grudge, but the rest of us won't. Even Rustyheart, she might look tough, but she's sweet, I promise." He thought for a moment, then added warmly, "You haven't even messed up that badly compared to the rest of us! You fell in love with a cat that happened to support a leader the others didn't like. That's not so bad." He shrugged. "Did they ever tell you what I did when I was your age?"

Squirrelpool felt her stomach sink further. She knew Landon was right, but it still hurt that her bond with Chimerastar may never be repaired. However, she felt a glimmer of hope with her other family members. Maybe he was right? Surely this wasn't so bad? Her ears pricked up and she gave him a quizzical half-smile. "No, I don't think so." She purred weakly.
“Well, I had just been promoted to co-deputy when I was taken by twolegs,” he began. “On my way back I ran into— a cat I had come to know briefly, when she had an affair with my best friend’s father. She was nothing like O had heard so we had... a night, and some kits.” He shrugged guiltily. “You’ll know her now as Foxstar, leader of SunClan.”

Squirrelpool's eyes rounded with shock as he told his story. "Wow, the Foxstar?" She could hardly get the words to come out properly. How did he manage that one? Everyone knew just how sly the orange leader was. "Where are the kits now?" She asked cautiously. "You don't have to tell me if it is too personal."
“Yeah. You should have seen how angry everyone was after that.” He shook his head. “Phoenixriver — my mom, she was leader back then — was really upset; she already hated Foxstar for ruining her friend’s marriage.” At her question he actually grinned. “Oh, you’ve met them. Saltpile is a loner now with her mate, and Steepfall and Slaughterfish went to SunClan.” They were known to be his kits, but not all cats realized who their mother was, though it wasn’t fully a secret.

Squirrelpool's eyes widened and she couldn't help but giggle at the realization. "I must really be a mousebrain not to know that." She admitted with a snort. "I didn't realize Foxstar was their mother..." The grey she-cat trailed off a moment before looking back up at him. "So you think they'll forgive me?"
“Of course. They were all mad at me for a while but they came around. Even when I pushed them all away they knew better than to let me go. Give them time and everyone will support you,” he promised. “And if you ever need a break, you can always stop by twolegplace. Brizo loves visitors and I would enjoy seeing you again.” His mother-in-law was known for taking in strays like him.

Squirrelpool's eyes lit up suddenly and she jumped to her paws. "That's it! Let's go now to the twolegplace!" She purred, regaining some of her former strength. However, she got up so quickly that it made her a little dizzy. Still swaying, she attempted to focus her attention on Landon. "Oh please. I need a break from camp and it's been so long since I've seen Brizo!"
Landon laughed. "As much as I hate to kill your excitement, we can't go right now. I promised Cygnus and Orion they'd have another day at least to meet the other kits." His new sons had been almost as eager as he was to visit the clan. Urania would be happy to leave anytime, he was sure, but his mate wouldn't want to ruin his family reunion. "Soon," he promised, "you can come. Maybe when we return you can tag along."

Her tail drooped for a moment, feeling her hopes crashing down. She knew she couldn't let him see her disappointment. He had been so kind to talk to her and he even invited her to go with them. She painted a smile across her muzzle and nodded. "That would be wonderful. I think some time away will help." Would she come back? The question stuck in her mind like a hard stone. She knew her kits would thrive in Waterclan, but would it ever feel the same?
His smile softened, and he touched his muzzle to her ear briefly. "They'll come around," he promised, "don't worry. I know this is difficult right now, but don't forget, you're going to have some wonderful little kits. It doesn't matter now who their father is, you'll love them so fiercely they will never feel unwanted. Maybe if you like it in twolegplace, when you're older, you can all come visit and tell me I'm right. Like always."

Squirrelpool lifted her eyes and gave him a little snort of amusement. "You'll be right, of course." She agreed before rising to her paws. "Well, if we can't go to the twolegplace then we ought to do something. I'm getting restless just sitting around."
