Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Gladiator, one of the best fighters in Absum Lux, had been given an apprentice. The proud tom had hollered out during the ceremonies, showing off his blusterous personality and his excitement at such a challenge. Training one who knows nothing was deemed an honorable fate as well as a difficult one. He was determined todo it the best, to make sure this young one was stronger than all their peers! But who was this cat? He’d hardly been able to hear their name over his own cheers for every cat and then the more blusterious ones he’d used at the call of his own name.
Finn was the name given to the eldest of Shae’s last litter. Yet, being first born had not secured the position as strongest. On the contrary, only her younger sister Kallie was weaker than she was. Perhaps this was why her mother had paired her with Gladiator. Perhaps it was some twisted joke in order to make it so her daughter might one day be worth something. Finn had felt her heart drop when he had been named her mentor. Most cats would have found this an honor, but not her. She had wanted an average mentor, one of no determinable skill, so that once again, she could slip to the sidelines. That would be better than disappointing others, wouldn’t it?
“Gladiator,” she meowed meekly as she padded up. “I believe you’re my mentor.”
“Young one!” One of Shae’s brood was to be his apprentice? Wonderful! He shall train them hard, until they are worthy as he. “Come, let us begin. I shall teach you to hunt first so we may get the measly task out of the way and to the fun part.” Gladiator wasn’t much of a hunter. His skills resides in combat, but hunting was important for food. That and he wished to save his favorite part for last.
The... fun part? Finn found herself wincing deeply at the idea. She was sure she knew what that meant: fighting. Wanheda, did she not want to fight. Of course, it was a skill each cat should know. Perhaps if she could learn to fight, she would be able to stick up to her mother better. Still, she had no desire for another cat to put their paws on her body, particularly not this tom. "Shouldn't... you show me around the territory, too?" she asked, sort of quietly. Her voice was always quiet, always afraid.
"You do not yet know your way?" She was his first apprentice, and all he understood of the role was that he was to teach her to hunt and fight. Gladiator tilted his head on thought, trying to remember if he was to show her around or not. "Well, I do suppose I can do that while we hunt...but I was under the impression that your mother had shown you the land when you first came upon it." It seemed like something Shae would do with her brood, especially since they came all as one and were not born here. Alas, he'd take the time out of their day to show her the place the called home.
She flinched visibly again at the mention of her mother. "We walked to the center of the coalition when we first joined, but we got no grand tour." Bold of him to think that Shae would do anything that would be considered productive with her kittens. "We were basically told to stay in the camp or there would be ... consequences." Of course, Finn had ignored this mostly, and knew her way around parts of the city. However, she hadn't ever expanded her little area of comfort too far, always afraid Shae would find her. At least he seemed like he would point out landmarks as they hunted.
“Very well. I suppose we shall start with a tour. This way now, young one.” Gladiator flocked his tail in slight annoyance and as a sign to follow as he disappeared into the underbrush. Well, this would put a damper into his training plans. Today alone would need to be dedicated to scouting the territory just so shed knew her way around, somewhat at least. “You know camp, no? Well heading this way is towards the forest which leads to our borders with the other clans. Well start there and work back in.”
She could sense his irritation; it was something she knew well. Well, perhaps not his particular irritation, as this would be the first time that they really interacted, but how different could different cats be when they were irritated? Her nose twitched slightly, her body incredibly tense. She was waiting for him to hit her. Whether or not he would was something different. "That sounds like a good plan," she admitted. "We border the Regime and the League, correct?"
“Yes. And sadly the kittypets. But worry not, they’ve learned better than to even step paw near here. No reason for us to waste our time with them lazy bums.” Gladiator was more frustrated that they couldn’t just start training already. He wanted to get to the fighting. The battle! Show this kit what it meant to be a combatant of Absum Lux. But now it would need to wait for a different day. “If the League and the Regime knew what was good for them they’d follow the house scraps lead and stay away. Better yet, give us their land and leave.” Oh, how glorious that fight would be! The mere thought had his blood boiling and his fur rising on end. Gladiator shook it out, calming himself for a moment. “Do you know of anywhere else? Besides camp.”
She had no desire to actually start training. Honestly, she was upset with her mother for assigning her to Gladiator. It was a cruel joke, to not only give her to a tom but one who was clearly as... intense as this one was. Finn didn't care enough about this group or about being a combatant or about anything to be assigned to somoene who was so excited for the battle. She blinked her eyes, chosing to ignore most of what the tom had to say, until, that is, his question. "I've explored the north side of the territory on my own," she meowed dully, her tail low.
