Burningember sat in the center of the camp clearing waiting for his mentee. His tail flicked in anticipation as he thought of what was to come next. This being his first apprentice, he had no idea of what he wanted wanted to do, or, rather, what he should do. He was nervous but excited at the same time. He talked to his brother, Icefrost, but since he hadn't had an apprentice yet either, he had nothing to add to ease his anxiety. What if the he isnt interested? What if he thinks I'm a bad mentor? Thoughts rushed throughout his head and his tail flicked even more.

The golden-brown apprentice skipped towards his mentor with a bright smile on his maw. "Hello Burningember." He greeted with a dip of his head. Talonpaw was a cheery cat even though his father, Regn, had passed away shortly after he was born. Without either of his parents, Fjordpaw was all he had left. He took the pain a lot easier than his sister, which was obvious in his happy nature and warm personality.
Burningember returned the smile to the young apprentice. He internally sighed a breath of relief. He doesnt seem thatthat bad. he thought. "Hello, Talonpaw. Are you ready for your first training session?" A sudden jolt of excitment mixed with anxiety hit him at the realization that his time was now - the time to actually train another cat.

"Yes sir!" He responded, fighting the purr that threatened to break through his voice. He wanted to look tough for his mentor, but the excitement was making it difficult. "What are we going to learn today?"
He smiled, amused by the young cats enthusiasm. "Today, I'm going to have you do some tasks, a test of sorts, and see what your strengths are and then go from there," he informed. "But first, was there something you really wanted to learn?" He didnt want to be imposing and push a training regime that wont bring out the best in Talonpaw. If hes not interested, he wont give it his all.

Talonpaw's eyes widened. Tests? That sounded intimidating, but he could feel the challenge driving his energy. "I just want to learn everything." He admitted with a cheeky smile. It was one that would earn him a good swipe on the ear from Fjordpaw. She was always telling him that he was too giddy. "I'm excited to figure out my strengths! Fjordpaw says that I'm a good talker." He purred.
He chuckled and nodded. "We can surely work on everything, if you want to," he assured. However, I may not be the most well rounded cat to be able to do that. Maybe if I asked him, he'd be able to help out.... "FjordpawThe name Fjordpaw sounded familiar but he couldn't place a face to it. "Are you two related?" he asked curiously.

Talonpaw let out a chuckle and nodded. "Yeah, although she only claims me as her brother sometimes." He answered with a cheeky grin. The two were almost opposites when it came to personality. She was serious and a quick learner. He was bright and giddy like the sun on a clear day.
"Ah, I see. That seems a little messed up," he replied with a laugh. Glancing toward the entrance of the camp, he said, "Are you ready to get a move on?" At this time of day, the sun was high in the sky and bearing down on them. What next, what next? He thought for a bit what he test he wanted Talonpaw to do first.

Talonpaw shook his head. "She's just giving me a hard time." He meowed with a snort then nodded. "Yeah, I'm ready!" There was a determined gleam in his eyes as he glanced up at his mentor.
Burningember looked down at his apprentice and winked. "Well let's get a move on then," he said as he rose to his paws and started off toward the entrance. "Once we get to where we are going, I'm going to give you a task so be ready, Talonpaw," he warned

The golden tabby gave a nod of understanding. He tried hard not to get under Burningember's paws as he followed him out of camp. The excitement fizzled in his belly and put an extra bit of pep in his step. "I've never seen the territory outside of camp." He remarked in awe as he gazed around.
Burningember gasped as his head snapped to look at Talonpaw. "Really? Your parents didnt take you on a tour whhen you were younger?" he questioned, shocked. "That's absurd," he said with a slight chuckle. "Well I guess it's only fair to show you around then before we get started then.

At the question, Talonpaw shuffled his paws in the dirt. "Well, my dad was from Earthclan and mom died when Fjordpaw and I were born." He explained quietly. "But it's okay! I'm glad that you can show me now!" His voice was cheery and optimistic, like he had pushed the pain well down under his outer being.
He frowned. It was unfortunate, the situation Talonpaw was in. It must be eating him up inside, Burningember thought. But despite that, he remained optimistic and that was an admirable trait. Replacing the frown with a soft smile, he decided to lighten the mood, but unsure of what to say. Situations like this, he didnt handle too well.

"I've always wondered what the borders looked like. Are they big, tall walls of stone?" He ventured awkwardly, also wanting to lighten the mood. He imagined the borders and already wore a face of awe at the mountainous barriers in his thoughts.
"They're something... like that, Talonpaw. Here, follow me. I'll show you." Burningember said, motioning with his tail for him to follow. He led the way toward the part of the border closest to the rocky area.

"Really? Thank you so much!" He meowed happily. Talonpaw's ears pricked up in interest as he followed Burningember. He wondered what border they were going to see. The young tom sniffed the air to try and pick out the scent, but it was unfamiliar to him.
As they neared, the dirt was being replaced with cool rocks. "Ah, we're getting close," he said to Talonpaw over his shoulder. He smelled the air to catch the scent but oddly, there was another scent in the air. One he didnt like too much. "Stay close to me, Talonpaw."
