PART ONE OF THE PLOT SYNOPSIS. During the new-moon Feast, a time where BrookClan families each brought a sacrifice to the gods to be blessed before eating in communion with each other while, Kerrigan makes an announcement for the clan. Starting the next night, they would lay siege to EarthClan.
The Tsar of BrookClan looked down around her. The sacrifice was ready to be blessed by Alyx. Each family had gathered here, all felines older than four moons that were not in the nursery watching the infnats mingled intertwined with each other in a circle around the pile. Each family had brought an offering to the gods, just as any good family would do. The pile was large, and it made the corners of her lips twitch. The gods would be pleased tonight. This was a good thing, as tonight would be the night that Kerrigan announced the next step for BrookClan. She needed to be in the favor of the gods for her plan to work, for the intricate deciding that she had done by the moonlight the last three nights to have been worth anything. She felt that the gods were in favor of her decisions; after all, there had been no signs otherwise. Even tonight, the night of the Feast, there was not a single cloud in the sky. The starts shined brightly, making the darkness that settled over every new-moon less unnerving.
To quiet the murmuring cats down, Kerrigan cleared her voice.
"Good evening, Comrades," spoke the flower-crowned leader, her eyes shifting to the bodies that gathered around the pile of prey in a circle. She sat at the head of the group, on a slightly elevated platform. Next to her sat Sammy and Alyx. "I appreciate the chance to be with you all tonight. As always, once the sacrifice has been blessed, I will update you all with what you can expect out of the next few days. It will be an exciting time for BrookClan, and I am excited to share it with you. After I have explained, the floor will be open for discussion of what I have shared, or of any other concerns you may have."
She paused, to allow the murmurs again to die down. "Alyx, the floor is yours."

Lua looked up at her adopted mother, her eyes widened. The small kitten sat with the rest of the Harlow family, but there was an anticipation in her gaze. This was the first clan gathering the kitten was old enough to be invited to, and she could barely withhold her excitement.
--
Serena's fur brushed the cat next to her as she settled into position. She, unlike the kitten who sat not incredibly far from her, had experienced many moons of the same ritual done every new moon. The high priest would bless the pile as a whole. The five plumpest pieces of prey would be set aside for the Gods, to be left on the stone in which Kerrigan sat. The rest would be passed between the felines who gathered. The Tsar would then begin to speak and announce anything that she desired to announce. Other cats would have a chance to speak their piece about what she had to say. Then, the felines would have a chance to sit and mingle until the first glimpses of morning glow moved over the trees. Then, the BrookClan cats would all part ways, either to run patrol or to sleep. This happened each new moon without incident. However, she could anticipate by the look on the Tsar's face that this time, it may be different.
The tall brown tom stepped forward, his icy gaze scanning over the prey laid out before him.
Tentatively and tactfully he selected five pieces of prey that he felt were suitable enough to appease the gods.
Only once he was absolutely certain and satisfied with his picks did he clear his throat to speak.
"Gods, we offer this prey unto you in gratitude of your protection during the flood.
Let it be yet another proof of our faith and unyielding in you, and in turn I ask that you bless this prey in which we are about to consume.
In your names we thank you." His voice rang clearly and unwavering as he spoke loud enough for all the cats who had gathered to hear him.
It was his first time speaking at a feast as high priest, and if he was nervous he didn't show it. He dipped his head to the clan and then to Kerrigan before returning to his spot.
--
Gabriel watched his friend closely as he spoke from his place beside his mate. The small tom couldn't help but, feel proud of the large tom.
for his first time speaking to the gods at a feast he did pretty well in his opinion.
The boyar gave an encouraging smile to Alyx before turning back to the crowd of cats. It was unusual to have all the families in one place, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. Sammy would've preferred to be next to Gabe, his mate, but instead he was seated in his position next to Kerrigan. He was proud of how everything had come together, and even prouder of how well hunting had went for the families so that the pile was this huge. Being part of one of the larger and more important families, a large part of the pile came from the Tsar's family.
Elisio and Carina sat beside each other, sharing an uneasy glance between them. Historically, a leader announcing an exciting time for their Clan had meant something along the lines of "get ready to go to war", which wasn't a prospect that either of them felt very excited about. Then again, if there was anyone that could lead BrookClan to victory, wasn't it Kerrigan? At least the gods hadn't struck them down during the religious rites - that seemed to be a good start.
Sagecloud sat alone, a fair distance away from the other families. His eyes caught sight of Serena a few tail-lengths away, but he didn't really feel up to maneuvering his way through the crowd to get to her.
"Praised be," she murmured in response to Alyx's prayer, before she rose to her paws from her seated position. There was a smile on her face, one that seemed easy. It was the same smile that had won the hearts of these peoples when she first decided it was her time to take power. It was a smile that would be unnerving if you knew anything about the true nature of the Tsar, but luckily for these cats, there were few that really did understand what went on in her mind.
"Please, feel free to start passing the prey," she meowed, as she took one off of the pile and passed it to Alyx. She figured that Sammy and Gabriel could take care of themselves and get their own. "Once everyone is settled, we can discuss the plans from this moment further."
// Serena took the moment to find herself a vole and sneak towards Sagecloud. If he wouldn't come to her, she'd have to go to him. With a raised eyebrow, she plopped next to him, nudging the prey over. "You made me lose a good spot," she grumbled to him.
Seeing the cats start to move the prey around, Kerrigan smiled again. There was a part of her that wanted to warn that this could be the last meal together. Her plan came wrought with the risk of collateral damage. Still, any cat who would lay down their life the next night would do so for a cause.
"Tomorrow, we lead an attack on one of our greatest adversaries," she meowed after a moment. "Tomorrow, we lay siege to EarthClan."
Kerrigan's eyes trained on her brother. This was a challenge; Kerrigan did not like challenges. "My words were perfectly clear," she meowed, her smile fading slightly. "Tomorrow, we lay siege to EarthClan."
The tom's mind wasn't think straight as he replied. He knew very well he wasn't supposed to challenge the Tsar. Ever. "We just recovered from the floods! Is it really wise to attack another clan?" This was the last place to confront her.
Her head tilted slightly, as if she really wondered if her brother was truly stupid enough to pull a stunt in front of the entire clan. Private questioning of her motives was one thing. Publicly doing so was suicide, and every cat in the group knew it.
"Are you questioning my motives?" she asked, the smile lost from her face. "You act if I am a fool. I truly hope that you are not taking me for a fool, brother." There was a sickly sweet tone to her voice. This statement alone was loaded. If he tried to prove her a fool for this, she would return the favor and admit that it was illogical to accept an outsider into the highest ranks. "It has been moons since the flood. I suffered from the flood as much as the rest of the clan." Her fur bristled slightly as the statement brought up a vivid memory of the water entering her lungs. "However, we have had time to recover. Are we expected to lay down in submission forever, brother?"
Her words were laced with a threat that would be clear to him: shut your mouth before I shut it for you.
"I am not ignorant, brother. If the risk outweighed the benefit, I would not act."
She turned to the rest of the group. "I promise you, comrades, that this will benefit the Monarchy. Have I ever broken a promise to you before?"
She offered a wide smile to those around her, because she, like everyone else in the group, knew that she hadn't. She had promised to reclaim the BrookClan territory. She had within two weeks of having the throne. She had promised that BrookClan would thrive; other than the natural disaster that was out of her paws, it had. She didn't make promises she could not keep.
The tom thinned his eyes and turned away. There was no way even he was dumb enough to reply to that. He already had a feeling that he would be reprimanded for it later.
Alyx hung back, and stayed quiet as the tsar and her brother argued. The high priest had bent his head to take a bite of his share of prey when the confrontation began, he wasn't stupid enough to speak out against Kerrigan and he figured if he interrupted to side with Kerrigan she'd likely find a reason to claw his ears off anyway. No instead the dark tom stayed frozen, his piercing blue gaze locked on the two bickering cats. He almost completely deflated when Sammy didn't respond, he wasn't sure how he'd handle overseeing his friends execution.
Gabriel's heart lurched up into his throat as Sammy spoke out against the leader, part of him deeply admired his mate's courage but, the other half of him knew the repercussions of the former Boyar's actions would not be good. The small sandy tom pressed himself against Sammy's flank in an attempt to calm him down.
Athena swallowed a mouthful of squirrel before turning her honey gaze on Kerrigan. She'd recently grown very fond of the tsar, and when Kerrigan's fur ruffled at the mention of the flood it did not go unnoticed. The golden tabby stood as close to the leader as she could without touching her and spoke in a soft voice. "They're just afraid." she meowed reassuringly. She wasn't going to question Kerrigan's choices, the leader only ever did what was necessary for the sake of her clan. If she wanted to fight Earthclan, Athena would gladly march into battle, within reason.
It was clear that the Tsar was still quietly seething over the interaction. Despite her ability to save face and appeal to the populism of BrookClan in her promise, the warmth that her eyes had once had had disappeared. Her gaze was now cold as it searched around the clearing, daring even one more person to question her judgement.
It was then that she felt the presence of Athena. She had noticed that the cat had lingered closely to her the entire time, but this was the first moment that Kerrigan paid much attention to her presence. She heard the cat's words, and she forced herself to calm slightly. She turned her head towards her, offering a slight smile.
"I know," she meowed after a moment, trying to settle herself completely. "Still, we cannot fall victims to cowardice. Cowardice destroyed us once," she meowed, referring to the fleeing of BrookClan following the Primal Instinct devastation, we cannot let it destroy is again. We must seize the moments and opportunities that we have in the moments we have them, and this is one we must not miss."
She spoke these words to Athena, but loudly enough that the entire clan would hear. "We must regain our position in the forest as cats to respect, before someone tries to take advantage of us again. This is a mission that we must not, will not fail, gods be willing."
