Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. He hadn't expected coming home to hurt quite this much. Not home, he reminds himself quickly, frowning at himself in frustration and grinding his paws into the dirt, like having a grip on the earth will make this better, easier, like it will drown out all the treacherous instincts under his skin telling him to cross the border, run into the trees, go back where you belong. The darkness on the other side looks so welcoming, so comforting, so familiar. He places one forepaw on top of the other daintily and stares gloomily into the trees, waiting for his brother to arrive and half-hoping he never does. It would be so much easier, he thinks, to just be forgotten. To wait here until the sun rises soft and golden over the treetops and he's still alone. To be left with no choice but to go back to his own territory - to go home.
The thought lodges guilt into his throat like bile and he swallows thickly, eyes drifting down to stare at the shadows cast by the moon behind him. All he's wanted for moons is to see his brother again, and now... He sighs, breath misting in the cold air, and closes his eyes. You're making a mistake, Flickerflame had said, when Doefreckle had told him of his latest infatuation - the love of my life, he had insisted, just as he had insisted all those times before. Oh, you should see him - then you would understand. (Does he treat me well? No. But that's not what love is supposed to be, is it? It's supposed to be painful! That's the whole joy of it!)
And he'd been so sure that time. Now, all he has to show for his troubles is healed bruises and damaged pride and a new Clan that isn't where he belongs. Oh, he makes the most of it, all smiles and feigned optimism - but one look at him and his brother is going to see the truth: he's lonely, and miserable, and embarrassed, and he just wants to come home. A breeze stirs up the fresh scents of NightClan and Doefreckle inhales and holds his breath, savouring the familiar warmth that's all nursery beds and playfights and sharing tongues under the full moon. He doesn't see the moon much nowadays. These cats he's with now prefer the sun.
A rustle in the bushes. He snaps his head up and plasters a big smile onto his face, rising to his paws and ignoring the ache in his fractured leg as he hops excitedly on the spot. "About time!" he calls cheerfully, and the forced sunniness is a dim sort of comfort, the artificial warmth seeping into his veins and replacing itself with the beginnings of the real thing - and he realises, in a sharp stab of excitement, that he's so glad he stayed to see him. It really is quite difficult for Doefreckle to stay gloomy for long.
He doesn't like to think about the reality of the sadness that's always lurking under the sunshine.
He doesn't like to think about the fact that he just doesn't want Flickerflame to worry - that the sadness is still there, and it will creep back in the moment he leaves him at the border.
Pain clutches at his chest. He smiles wider and ignores it.
"I've been waiting here for hours, you pest! I can't feel my paws anymore, and you know how much my natural, bubbly charm relies on my moves, on my ability to shake it with the best of 'em - on my joie de vivre, even, if you will."

Flickerflame looked at his brother. He'd been frustrated with Doefreckle, angry that he just couldn't see/i] that he was heading for disaster and disappointment. Now walking up to join his brother, noting how he favored one of his legs as he rose up, the frustration and even bitterness of Doefreckle leaving him behind faded away. Instead sadness colored his eyes.
But he sees Doefreckle struggling to try and light up the clearing with forced cheer, and he pushes away the knee jerk feeling of sorrow and pity.
"It's good to see you," He purred padding up to his brother and nudging him gently with his muzzle, taking care not to actually unbalance him. He knows telling Doefreckle that he can see the facade, that he can see his brother's pain will only make Doefreckle double down. "It's been too long brother, I was hoping you'd visit sooner. Though with our recent earthquake, it makes sense you stayed away until it was safe. How are things...." He trailed off, unsure where to go with the question from there.

Doefreckle stumbled a little as his brother nudged him, but caught himself with an outstretched paw and beamed up at him like he was saying don’t worry, I’m fine! It hadn’t occurred to him that it would be the first time Flickerflame would see his fractured leg, the paw twisted at an unnatural angle and the ankle bone straining against the skin like it was trying to break through. He tucked his injured foreleg behind the other and smiled, hoping he wouldn’t notice, or that he wouldn’t ask any questions if he did. It had been over a moon since it had happened and any initial infection had been staved off more through sheer force of will than any particular medical care; he still didn’t feel comfortable enough in BrookClan to risk a trip to their Vrachi.
It still hurt — constantly — and it had taken a lot of time to come to terms with the reality of never being able to run again, or hunt like he had before, or just... do any of the things that he’d loved and taken for granted. That truth stuck in his chest like dull grief that never went away — he’d had it taken from him, and it was his fault, and he was never, ever going to get it back. But he smiled, as he always did, and the trauma faded behind the smoke screen of all that sunshine and forced optimism. He was dying on the inside, but it was lovely!
His purr died in his throat. “Earthquake?” he echoed, frowning at his brother. Guilt spread through him like an oil spill, dark and sticky. How had he not known? His birth Clan had suffered an earthquake, and he’d been too busy with his own life and failed romances to even notice? “How’s— how is everyone? How are you? Is the— is the camp okay?” He felt a blind panic rising in him; he shuffled to and fro uneasily, wanting nothing more than to run past his brother and go check on his Clan for himself, to help, to do something. Now that he looked, he could see the physical scars the landscape bore. How had he not noticed?
“I’m so sorry,” he whispered, voice catching around a helpless sob. “I should have been there. I should be there now. You need me — they don’t.” He jerked his head behind him in the vague direction of BrookClan and surged forward to brush his cheek against Flickerflame’s, resting his chin on his brother’s shoulder in a close hug.
