Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
It had only been a couple of weeks or so since Yumemi-kepa had joined the coalition, but darn it, she really should have known her way around the territory by now.
The sage winced as she peered around at the unfamiliar city stretched out before her, a bundle of herbs she'd been collecting lying largely forgotten off to the side. "...Huh," she muttered, eyeing up a (hopefully) dead monster with a hint of suspicion. "I swear I already passed this thing, like, twice before..." If push really came to shove, she'd be fine out in the wild for a while; Yumemi had lived on the road once, and she could do it again. But...it would be nice if she could find her way back to the mausoleum. Or anything resembling actual civilisation.
Gladiator, on his way back from a training session, found another blocking his path. “Hello, young kit!” Their new sage looked a little lost. Oh, how funny. The bold tom grinned down at her, “what? Do you not know your way back, young one?”
"Um...." Yumemi-kepa took one last look at her surroundings, then gave up. "Yup!" she chirped, hoping Gladiator would be nice to her and help her get back, rather than leaving her all alone in the city. She found that Absum Lux seemed to have a mixture of both, and she could never tell which side any one cat might lean more toward. "I sure am lost! But, uhm, maybe I'm not anymore...?" she asked, with a hopeful smile.
"Hmmm..." It would be a good idea to help the lost sage apprentice. Any other cat and Gladiator would merely laugh and walk off. But this was their dear High Sage's apprentice. "Come! Follow me, young one. I shall lead you home." It was the noble thing to do in such a situation.
"Oh, thank you!" Yumemi chirped, inwardly breathing a sigh of relief. She probably wasn't going to starve to death today, at least. "How do you guys do it? Navigate around here, I mean." Yumemi had always had a terrible sense of direction; it hadn't been much of an issue back when she'd been a literal wanderer, and it didn't really matter if she just went around in circles for weeks on end because the cats around her would be changing constantly. Now, she had a consistent home to get back to, and what felt like a million different places to go every day. "Like, are you born with it, or can you sorta learn it?"
“We are born here. Stories are told, passed on giving a glimpse of the land. Only then we see it for ourselves and learn all the little things.” He made a sharp turn not paying attention to if she followed or not. If she didn’t keep up then she’d be left behind to the judgement of the woods. It was how his mentor had trained him. “You shall struggle, young one. It is the consequence of having not been born to these lands.” Gladiator had followed and laughed at many who were suffering the same fate she was; trying and failing to learn the land they now called home.
"....Okay," Yumemi-kepa said, with a small frown as Gladiator turned sharply. "Struggling is good. I like struggling. It builds character. Mhm." So she would have to hear a lot more stories and see a lot more sights if she ever wanted to find her way around? That seemed perfectly logical, now that she thought about it. "So basically, you're saying I should get out more." A thought struck her suddenly. "What if you're deaf and blind? I mean, if you can't hear and you can't see then how are you supposed to listen to stories or go sightseeing? Has the coalition ever had any blind or deaf cats? Or do we just kick them out? I have so much to learn," she said, without taking a single breath.
“If that is how you wish to take it. My own mentor left me for loss out in the forests’ claws dead of winter and no more knowledge than how to fight and hunting. Even that was briefly taught to me.” He weaved around a bush, then giving a small leap over roots that stuck out of the ground that we’re only know to those who’d avoided them before. Gladiator slowed for a moment thinking in her question. “I know not of the blind or the deaf. But I believe they too are left to find their own way. All must. For all find their way to Absum Lux who belong here.”
Yumemi-kepa tried to stifle a gasp. “Your own mentor just left you out here?” she asked, eyes wide. She carefully avoided the roots that Gladiator had leapt over, giving them a dirty look before turning her attention back to the combatant. Not today, tree roots! “I dunno man, that seems harsh. I mean, even you’re taking some time out of your day to help me out and show me my way back,” she remarked. “...But I mean, I guess if anyone who finds their way to Absum Lux belongs there, and I found my way to Absum Lux, then...” She gasped suddenly. “Then that means that I belong here! Wow Gladiator, you’re really good at this motivational speech thing!”
“Well, yes. She didn’t have time to waste if I couldn’t handle keeping up.” Didn’t she understand that? Gladiator thought he’d been quiet clear when he’d said she’d just left him. Maybe it was becuase she hadn’t been born here? Had to be. It was the only explanation. The fluffy orange tom nodded his head, “I am only showing you the way back because you’ve made it there once already. Wanheda has delivered you to us and now we must teach you our ways. If she did not believe you were worthy than she would ah e allowed you to become lost in our woods.” All it took was her making it there once from a distance far away from camp and she would be accepted. It was what his mentor had explained to him after he’d found his way back. That only those who are led home by Wanheda are welcome to stay, for her children will always find a way home.
Yumemi-kepa frowned as she listened to Gladiator's words. She thought she was beginning to understand, but there was one small thing stopping her every time she tried to think about it too hard. "So, um..." she started, feeling as if she was about to dig herself into a massive hole. "Maybe this is like, Sin Number One in the coalition, but...what exactly is Wanheda?" She paused for a second trying to gauge the combatants reaction, before going on an anxiety-ridden tangent regardless. "I mean, obviously I know what it is because I'm the sage and we deal with them all the time. But...I think I'm a little too young, or a little too dumb." She smiled slightly at the unintentional rhyme, despite herself. "Sometimes it kinda...goes over my head. Is that bad? Am I gonna die?"
Gladiator froze. For her to be their High Sage’s chosen apprentice and not know their deity, it was..was a disaster!! Wanheda would bury them all at this rate. “I...” This cat, of all cats, should know the great Wanheda. Was Pluto not teaching her? Or was he just as appalled that the deity that brought her to them, was unknown by the chosen Sage. “You...I.. Wanheda is the great and powerful deity of our land. She has provided for her and you disgrace her by not knowing her and having such a strong title in the clan!” Anger sweeper through the massive tom. How dare she not know Wanheda!
