(This is the aftermath of Elyon-kun coming in and killing Smallspiral and stealing her eyes as part of her task to become assassin. Her scent is indiscernable, all that remains is Smallspiral's eyeless corpse.)
Elyon-kun stalked through the undergrowth the bloody pouch she'd fashioned from a leaf clenched in her teeth as she padded away leaving the corpse of Smallspiral lying on the ground.
The maine-coon she cats throat torn open her mouth agap, eyeless head turned towards the retreating figure of the bloody golden she cat who quickly strode away jumping into some puddles along the way, her trail of bloody paw prints fading as she slipped towards SunClan territory. The only trace of her presence being the body she'd left behind and the trail of bloody paw prints leading to the puddles she'd used to clean herself off before proceeding on her way.
Echopaw, Shadowfeather, Umbrapaw, and Larkwing were in a patrol together, joking around and having a good time. Suddenly Echopaw halted and a horrified screech of surprise erupted from her mouth as she stared down at her lifeless friend. It felt like a cold stone had sank to the pit of her stomach and suddenly she felt sick. Tears welled in her eyes and rolled down her cheeks.
Larkwing stared in horror as Echopaw dropped down beside Smallspiral, tears flowing from the apprentice's eyes. Larkwing wanted to join her but he had to keep calm for the sake of the clan. He, too, felt sick as he closed his eyes a breathed. Although he kept cool, anger was bubbling up inside of him. Bitterness and revenge. "Who would do such a thing?" He asked in a low growl.
Shadowfeather padded up. He had seen many things in his life as a rogue but he had never seen a corpse where the murderer had taken the eyes as a trophy. "This is sick work" he mewed at last. "This wasn't done by a clan cat."
Umbrapaw stared at the body, seeming to be unphased though a lump was growing in his throat. He had watched his mother die and death didnt scare him but it hurt more than he expected it to, to see a clanmate be killed in such a manner. He wasnt from Nightclan but they had taken him and his siblings in and nursed them. He had not been specifically close to Smallspiral but he knew her and his heart ached for Echopaw. She was always close to her friends and since Smallspiral's brother died in the earth quake, they had grown a little closer. It must be devasating to her.
Skypaw came up behind them, she could hear her partner's voice along with the rest of the patrol. She'd gone off to catch a rabbit that smelled really tempting. She trotted back over sightless eyes blinking at the strong scent of blood that permeated the area. Confused she came to a stop behind the patrol and set down her catch, scenting the air and cringing.
The scent of blood and death was strong. And underneath it all, traces of Smallspiral's scent remained. Her ears lowered in shock. Shakily she padded forwards coming up beside Umbrapaw. "Smallspiral... is she?" She couldn't bring herself to voice the question. Only a few moons ago they had lost Smallspiral's brother Thistlebriar, and now they'd lost Smallspiral as well?
"Yeah...she's gone..." Umbrapaw answered Skypaw gently. He knew she couldnt see what was going on and that was a good thing. She didnt need to see that. No one deseved to see this and Smallspiral definitely didnt deserve to die like this.
Echopaw burried her face into Smallspiral's fur. She didnt care that she was getting blood on her, she just wanted her friend back.
Larkwing walked over to Echopaw and rested his tail over her, "we need to take her back to camp. They will want to say their goodbyes." He took a paw and closed her eyelids, covering up the empty sockets.
Skypaw let out a whimper, her tail drooping as well a shiver going through her as she turned her head back towards where the smell of blood, death and faintly smallspiral was and she shivered again. Smallspiral hadn't deserved this, after losing her brother, she'd deserved to go on and be happy.
She went over to Echopaw, and pressed herself against her partner hoping to provide her with some form of comfort, her own sightless eyes felt wet and she realized she was crying as well. Crying over the injustice done to the older she cat.
Echopaw pressed against Skypaw, her heart aching. After a moment of embracing Skypaw's comfort, Echopaw finally rose to her paws, sniffing back the tears. "Larkwing is right. We need to take her back." Her voice was shaky and broken but she did her best to get it out.
"Shadowfeather, will you help me carry her back to camp?" Larkwing asked the large black tom.
The black warrior nodded, helping Larkwing lift Smallspiral upon his back. With Shadowfeather supporting her, they both carried the large she-cat back to camp. They laid her down in the middle of camp for everyone to gather around. Larkwing thought he should probably ask Turbulentpaw to prepare her for vigil later tonight. But first, he needed to see Burningstar. Larkwing padded to Burningstar's den and called into it. "Burningstar? I think your going to want to see this."
Skypaw kept close to Echopaw, her pelt brushing hers as they walked. She did have the thought to retrieve her catch before they left. If only to avoid attracting foxes, or other predators. With the blood in the area the last thing they'd need was food left out to make a predator not only come by, but stick around.
///---///
Burningstar awoke immediately at Larkwing's voice. He'd said he wanted to take a patrol out during the waning hours of the day. Blinking away the bleariness of her vision she poked her head out of her den. "Larkwing? See what-" She trailed off when she saw the bloody body of Smallspiral and her blood went cold. "Smallspiral..." She breathed, expression somber. They'd only just recently lost her brother... losing Smallspiral as well when the she cat was finally starting to come back around was depressing.
"We found her like this" Larkwing answered, his blue eyes holding grief. "We arent sure who did it but by the looks of it, it waa done on purpose and by a cat. Her eyes were taken as trophies. Shadowfeather doesnt think it was caused by a clan cat and I'm starting to think hes right. Most of the clan cats have better morals." He paused for a moment before asking, "Did she have any enemies that you know of?" It was hard to think that Smallspiral would have anyone out to get her. She was a noble warrior and respected. Perhaps it was a warning from another group? He did think he had caught a whiff of something more ferall than a clan cat but he had been too stunned to do any close investigating.
Burningstar frowned. While she knew most clans had morals, there were clans that had... strained morals. and were very grey. Was it perhaps the regime attacking Smallspiral by mistake? Or maybe even their way of getting back at NightClan for siding with SunClan (although the regime was allies with DayClan so that seemed kind of moot). Was it perhaps SunClan, lashing out just because they could? But with Foxstar seemingly absent and SunClan so hyper paranoid she imagined SunClan would rather not break alliances at this moment in time.
Her tail lashed. "I can't think of any enemies Smallspiral had personally... I." She grimaced Smallspiral had grown very withdrawn after Thistlebriar's death, and sure the she cat had bravely gone to WinterClan to rescue her brother only to get herself and her patrol captured. "The only one I could think who she might've upset was WinterClan, but they've long since changed leadership and I doubt they even remember they had her and her brother as a prisoner even. It would be ludacris for this to be a much belated vengeance against her for her breaking herself and her brother out." Burningstar muttered.
She sighed. "What we should do is send out a patrol to investigate the scene, now that Smallspiral is here Turbulentpaw can prep her for the vigil. Hopefully by the time the vigil starts the patrol will be back with some information." Though she doubted it, if Larkwing hadn't noticed anything at the scene besides that it was an act against the warrior code and was extremely barbaric. There were plenty of cats, the league, the regime if they made a mistake, SunClan, Absum Lux, or even a particularly vile rogue who could easily fall into that bill. Heck maybe it was even BrookClan, the tsar was likely related to Tasman and they'd have a reason to come after NightClan, with poor Smallspiral being the unfortunate victim.
"I can lead that patrol if you want me to" Larkwing offered, an unnaturally grim look crossed his face. Larkwing was never one to retaliate but having his clanmate murdered and having her eyes harvested only set the the fire beneath the boiling pot.
Echopaw laid beside Smallspiral, not wanting to leave her side. She was remembering the time they had snuck away from camp after the earth quake to have their own vigil for her brother. The memory burned into her mind, her heart feeling like it broke into a million pieces. Echopaw didnt have a family. Stealthclaw had taken her in and nursed her. All that she had for family was Nightclan which included everyone in it. She didnt see Smallspiral as just a friend. She was family. She rested her head on Smallspiral's lifeless body and stared blankly, her expression holding nothing but grief.
Burningstar nodded, "I would appreciate that," She said softly to Larkwing, amber gaze filled with sorrow as she looked towards Echopaw with Smallspiral.
Skypaw moved to join Echopaw, laying down beside her, their pelts touching. Letting her know she was there for her.
Stealthclaw padded out of the nursery. She saw Echopaw with Smallspiral and a bolt of horror went through her, she padded over to the leader and deputy. "What happened?"
"Smallspiral was murdered, her body was found by the patrol Echopaw was with," The leader murmured nodding to Echopaw and Skypaw.
Stealthclaw's expression turned grim, "I see... that's... that's rough." She murmured she glanced back towards where a fox had once tried to take a bite out of her flank, leaving her with nasty scars, though the medicine cat had been able to fix her up and save her life. "She was very close to Smallspiral... I should go be with her." With that the gray she cat went over to sit next to Echopaw, not saying anything just laying her tail on her adoptive daughter's other side. Leaving Echopaw sandwiched between Skypaw and Stealthclaw.
"If you're taking a patrol out, I'll go." Soaringbird said joining Burningstar and Larkwing she'd caught some of the conversation. "You say someone killed her? I'll find them and flay them." The silver tabby growled flexing her claws.
Larkwing nodded to Burningstar before greeting Soaringbird with a curt nod. "We wont do anything until we know exactly who did this to her" Larkwing told Soaringbird.
Echopaw leaned into Skypaw before Stealthclaw settled next to her and she shifted her weight to lean more on her adopted mother, tears soaking her cheeks. "She didnt deserve this" she choked out, staring down at her dead friend.
Soaringbird nodded slowly. "OF course, that's what I meant." She said.
//---///
Stealthclaw gave her daughter a lick on the head. "I know dear, but at least StarClan will take care of her. And she'll live on in our hearts." She said gently.
(Jet, I swear. If you kill off Skypaw on me, I will literally go through the screen and kick your butt XD I dont think Echopaw could handle losing Skypaw! It would be really hard on her if she lost Stealthclaw too!)
Echpaw sniffed, "yeah...thats true. I hope she went to Starclan with her brother. I know how much she missed him."
(Uh well she wont be losing Skypaw anytime soon i love my darling Skypaw, Stealthclaw though... wellllllllll)
Stealthclaw nodded, "Thats right, she and Thistlebriar will be reunited," she purred. "She'll still watch over you i imagine, she and I were excited about your recent passed assessment. She'll watch you become a warrior from the stars i just know it."
(ugh! My heart aches for her! Lol! Omg! I was just thinking! Before Stealthclaw dies, what if Echomelody's real mom comes back and tries to be a mother to Echomelody but Echomelody doesn't want anything to do with her since she was abandoned! And Stealthclaw could help her through it or maybe get jealous?)
"I hope so...I promised her that I would be the best warrior Nightclan has ever seen so that Thistlebriar didn't die in vein...Now I suppose I have to really live up to that promise..." She mewed, her voice still cracked through the grief.
Stealthclaw began to gently lick Echopaw's ears soothing her daughter as Skypaw snuggled in closer.
"You will darling," The gray she cat assured her. "She's up there with Thistlebriar and both of them are sitting and watching over you. Maybe even scuffling up there in the stars. Who knows! Maybe the next time you see a shooting star it'll be Thistlebriar playing with Smallspiral amongst the stars. Reminding you that they're watching over you and are enjoying their afterlife."
Echopaw gave Stealthclaw a grateful look, her tears drying as she sniffled. She gave a weak smile "I guess your right." She touched Smallspiral with her paw, her voice a little more than a whisper "may Starclan light your path on your journey, my friend."
