Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Shae blinked pale blue eyes as she looked into the mausoleum. She had told Pluto that she needed the Sage for the afternoon, and Pluto, who would probably walk off a cliff if she asked, had politely consented to giving up a day of training with the young cat. Her whiskers twitched. She wasn't sure if he had told Yumemi that she was being summoned, but in the end, Shae doubted it mattered. Nothing would probably prepare the younger cat for what Shae would ask.
"Yep!" Yumemi-kepa called out almost immediately, racing to the etrance of the mausoleum in an amount of time that was, frankly, horrifying. "Right here!" she added, showing off her teeth with a beaming grin. "Um, what can I do for you? Because I can do a lot for you, you know! So many things!"
She hadn't really interacted much with Shae beyond mild nods of the head - come to think of it, she'd probably talked more to that little wounded kit of hers than she had to Shae herself. I really should learn that girl's name, Yumemi thought idly. Maybe she could even figure out what the suckling was doing wrong, so she could help her! Yes, definitely only good things could come from this meeting, Yumemi decided.
It was almost adorable to Shae how willing this young cat seemed to be to bend to her will. Of course, she figured part of that was the fact that she was of kittypet roots; those cats barely had spines of their own. She didn't mind it, though. So long as it was only she that could bend the cat to her will, this would be a perfect situation. Shae would take advantage of her like she took advantage of everything she could.
"You're pretty excited, aren't ya, kiddo?" She purred, ruffling the fur on the younger cat's head with her tail. This was the Shae that a lot of cats knew, one that was charasmatic and endearing. Yumemi would learn the monster that lived in her chest, if she didn't already know, but for now, she wanted to make sure the kitty was on her side. "What kind of things can you do? What's good ol' Pluto taught ya so far?"
Yumemi beamed and relaxed into Shae's touch. The Heda didn't seem like someone who would hurt her kits without a good reason - maybe she was kind of a psycho behind closed doors, or something? Yumemi had seen a few of those types when she'd been on the road, but they usually weren't as outwardly nice and touchy as Shae seemed to be. "Well, Pluto hasn't personally taught me much yet," she mused, brow furrowing deep in thought, "but I already new a lot about medicine when I came here, 'cuz I used to fix people up in exchange for food and shelter! I have a really good grasp of basic first aid, and a lot of experience with dealing with old cats on their deathbed - lotta people who don't understand there's nothing you can do sometimes, you know?" She paused to take a breath, wondering how much detail Shae wanted her to go into. Probably a lot, right? "And, like, some background in some kinda weird stuff that crazy people on the road used to ask me to try my paw at. There's a loooooootta crazy people out there."
"I'm sure you're plenty capable, even just with the experience you picked up on the road," she purred. Shae then chucked at the last thing that the she-cat said. "You're absolutely right. A lot of crazies around these parts, especially." Shae had spent probably half of her life as a rogue at this point, and in the time she hadn't been, she had been surrounded by cats of a similar mental capacity in both Absum Lux and Primal Instinct. "They make life interesting, but they're an entire mess and a half." She laughed slightly, before turning to the entrance of the masoleum. "Let's go somewhere where we don't have to worry about bothering Pluto, hmm?" she instructed, moving towards the door.
"Has he taught you anything not directly related to herbs? About the culture of the Sage?" Her voice was curious. She wasn't trying to trap the she-cat into saying something, at least not yet. "My granddaughter, Dante, was a Sage for a while. She would tell me things, but wouldn't tell me too much because I hadn't made a bond with Wanheda yet."
Yumemi beamed at Shae's praise. "Ummmm..." she mewed, trying to think back to the things Pluto had taught her so far. Something not directly related to herbs, about the culture of the Sage? "He talked about, like, patrons," she offered lamely, beginning to feel a little useless. "And like...they're magic, or something. Sorry, we haven't really started that area of the curriculum yet..." Yumemi bit her lip. Was she about to get fired?
"That's okay, little one. I understand that some things take time," she cooed to the younger cat, noticing that she looked a bit nervous that she didn't know more. She was a sweet little thing, this Yumemi. It was almost an absolute shame that Shae would have to corrupt her. If Shae had any sense of morality, maybe this factoid would make her uncomfortable. She really didn't, though. A little corruption never hurt anyone, hmm? The scarred she-cat then sighed as they exited the home base of the group. "Did he tell you that with the help of your patrons, you might be magic, too? That you could do great things if you sought to?"
Yumemi-kepa blinked slowly, processing the heda's words. I could be magic, too? What does that mean? she thought. "I could be magic, too? What does that mean?" she asked, looking owlishly up at Shae. "And what great things could I do? Because I am sought-ing to do them! Whatever they are! As long as it's great, them I'm sought-ing it!" she chirped. I wish I knew what sought-ing was...
Shae let out a purr of delight. Oh, how cute. "I believe the word you are looking for, darling, is seeking. You're seeking out things," she meowed, her tone filled with pseudoendearment. Of course, the psuedo part was undetected; it was hard to get an accurate, real read on Shae unless that's what she desired. Unfortunately for Yumemi, that wans't something that she did.
"I don't know too much," she meowed, "but I know a little bit. Dante used to tell me that she would be sent on missions, sort of. Place curses but also do some more... interesting things. Once, she was sent to try to find the key to everlasting life, or something like that. I believe she called it transmutation or the key to immortality, but I'm unsure."
Yumemi's mouth gaped open for a few seconds as she stared at Shae. The...key to everlasting life? Immortality? How was the heda being so casual about this?! A revelation such as that would have an unimaginable impact on life in the forest for all cats who lived there, not just Absum Lux. Whoever discovered it first would be...a hero.
Yumemi kind of liked the idea of being a hero.
"I-I can do that!" she replied, with somewhat of a desperate air about her. She could barely get her words out without stammering out of excitement. "I mean, I don't know how yet, but I can le-learn! Travel around and pick up intel, do...curses, or whatever that thing was you said - and the transmutation thingy, I can learn how to do that too!" Now that she thought back to it, perhaps she had heard for word transmutation before; like she'd said to Shae before, there were a lot of psychos out there, and a few of them were a little too interested in some...odd concepts, to say the least. She'd disregarded it at the time, but now if Shae was asking for it, even indirectly...Yumemi was inclined to believe her.
She's too pure for this world. You can't do this, not to her. Shae, you'll get her into more trouble than you could ever imagine. Are you willing to do that?
The voice in the back of her head hadn't spoken in a very long time. It was Her voice, the voice of Genesis, the one that had tried to save the soul of the city's most damned. At one point, deep in their relationship, Shae had used the voice to help her determine right from wrong. The voice had been silenced, though, when she walked into Genesis and Omega. Well, sort of. The voice had told her not to kill herself, and she supposed she listened to it then, btu after, she had learned to ignore it quite completely. She had fallen back into old habits, and the voice progressively sounded less and less often.
Why is it talking to me now?
Her fur pricked slightly, but she regained her composure quickly. Even if it was the voice of reason, the voice of morality that had at one day been taught to her, she had no reason to start listening to it again. After all, it was hypocritical. After all, Genesis had cheated on her, broke her heart, abandoned her when she needed her most. What did she know?
It was still another beat, though, before she could speak again. "I think the two go hand in hand. The ability to bring back the dead and the ability to make them never die again." She hummed this, trying to brush off the unsettled feeling that the voice in her head had brought on. "If you set your heart to cracking them, and you actually do, you'll be my hero. Just think about all of the glory you would bring to Absum Lux, to me."
If Yumemi had been excited before, now she felt like she was going to have a heart attack out of sheer happiness. The Heda, the most powerful cat in the coalition who had essentially a direct line to Wanheda, had picked her! Was this feeling what other cats seemed to feel so easily, that elusive sensation of being needed and content that they spoke of? The one Yumemi had refused to believe exist, for fear that she would never get to experience it? How could she make Shae understand just how much this mattered to her?
"I will literally," Yumemi began, with a calm, measured tone and a frighteningly-intense gaze, "pack my bags this second, run out of our camp entrance, cross the whole city, go anywhere you need me to go, to get this done for you. You can count on me, 'kay?" she finished, settling back with a beaming smile. Had that been enough?
Delight moved through Shae's unwavering gaze. This was almost too easy. Of course, she was no stranger to charming her way into and out of situations, but this little girl basically fell right at her paws. She let out a deep purr that seemed to echo from deep in her chest, the kind of purr that was reserved for moments when the pieces ot all of Shae's plans were expertly falling into place.
"I have all the faith in the world that you can get this done for me," she meowed. "You don't have to leave quite yet, though. After all, I still have some things I want to talk to you about, if that's okay? I was thinking maybe we could go to my absolute favorite spot in the territory and talk a little more, both about this and about other things?"
Yumemi blinked, taking a second to consider Shae's words. ....Yeah, now that I think about it more, it would be dumb to leave right now. But hey, she'd proved her dedication, at least. And now she was going to learn the heda's favourite spot in the territory! That was definitely something she'd keep in mind for the future.
"Of course!" she chirped, nodding enthusiastically. "I love talking! Can't get enough of it! I just won't shut up sometimes!"
She chuckled, before turning towards her favorite landmark. Any cat who had been around longer than Yumemi-kepa might have known where they were going. She was strangely territorial of the old landmark, and it was where she made her own nest most nights. Cats knew where to find her if they needed her, but she didn't like sleeping in the midst of the city. It was too crowded. The old corvette in the meadow, though, was a perfect spot when she needed to get some air.
Soon, they were in front of the red monster. Her scent was clear by it; it was the only scent that permeated the area. To be invited to stay here was an honor, whether the Sage understood it or not. "This is it. Go ahead and jump in and get settled on the seat, and I'll follow."
"Oooh." Yumemi-kepa had caught faraway glimpses of the corvette in the past, but she'd never quite had the courage to take a proper look at it, out of some misguided fear that it would come alive and eat her, or something else equally horrific. But that had been a week ago, and Yumemi had matured immeasurably since those days of her foolish youth. Besides, the monster probably knew better than to screw with her while Shae was around, anyway.
"Sweet ride!" Yumemi chirped, winking at the heda as she settled down into one of the seats. She had absolutely no idea what it meant, but she'd heard other cats say it around different monsters during her travels, but it seemed to be vaguely positive, and she figured Shae could probably make some sense out of it. "So, what else would you like to talk about? I enjoy conversing in regards to a variety of topics! So you can just pick anything, really!"
It was probably for the best that Yumemi hadn't tried to get too close to it before. There were blood stains on the interior from cats who were unfortunate enough to be sitting in her car when Shae had come back to it. To some, sleeping in the dried blood of others would probably be a turn off, but to Shae, it was only part of the enchantment of the monster. She leapt in it herself, before settling into the driver's seat. It had been so long since she found this beaut, and the driver's seat had slowly become worn to the shape of her small body. If Shae was to have a safe space, this would be it.
"Thanks, I fixed her up myself," she teased. If they were humans, this would probably mean that she did some mechanical work, but, since she was a cat, it meant that she had decorated her nest with some feathers and moss, not that the seats particularly needed it.
Shae then blinked. "I want you to tell me a little about your time before Absum Lux, if that's okay? Perhaps we could swap stories about our past? I'll tell you how I grew up, and you tell me how you did? I'm curious to see what your travels have taught you."
"My past, huh?" Yumemi-kepa echoed, gaze drifting off into the distance, in the vague direction of where she assumed her family still resided. "Well, there's nothing much to tell!" she chirped, unsure if she was being honest or not. Was there anything particular of note to tell Shae? It wasn't like she had some dramatic, dark past that held the key to what made Yumemi Yumemi. She was just Yumemi. Yumemi Yumemi Yumemi. Yes, that was her name.
"My family are kittypets, and as far as I know, they still are. But I always knew I was destined for something more! So I left them, and I never even felt bad about it!" she beamed, as if that was something to be particularly proud of. "And then, I travelled. Wandered, really. I didn't really choose to learn medicine - more like I had to, so I wouldn't die. But I got good enough at it that cats would let me stay with them if I healed them, and they'd give me tips on cool places to go!" She was leaving...huge gaps, but Shae could easily ask the right questions to fill them in. "Was that enough for me, so far? Do I get to ask you a question now?"
She listened to the she-cat talk, noting how she managed to disinclude any detail that could actually be beneficial for the Heda. Oh well, she supposed she couldn't blame the young thing; she would learn, soon enough, how to answer the questions of the queen in the most satisfying of ways. "I'm curious to know the specifics of your traveling," she admitted after a moment, before blinking. Shae wanted to know what Yumemi knew. How helpful could the young cat truly be?
"However, I think you deserve at least one question," she purred after a moment. Shae was expecting that Yumemi would ask the obvious: what happened to your face? It was a sordid tale, the story of Shae's burn marks, but one that she wasn't opposed to telling. However, it said a lot about her, about the fact that she was mostly unbothered by the fact she watched her parents become little more than ash and smoke. Perhaps she would leave out that part. Or, perhaps the she-cat would surprise her and ask something else.
Yumemi-kepa gave a tiny cough to clear her throat, before proceeding along with the obvious. "Where's the cool face scar from?" she asked, eyes immediately fixating on it as if she was making up a fake backstory for it in her head.
