Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Pluto had an apprentice. What he was going to do with her, he had no idea. Jezi had told him to pick one and he did, the first one he saw and therefore believed Wanheda had chosen from him, but now what? The sickly looking tom watched her from the darkest area of the den, the area he claimed as his own. He should probably begin with the herbs. It would be best so that no one was killed if he left her to administer them. Pluto just didn't want to have to deal with explaining to Jezi that the cat had died due to being fed herbs that shouldn't mix.
( quick question, does the sage take the -kepa suffix like the tyros do? x3 )
Yumemi-kepa was practically radiating. “P-Pluto, sir!” she chirped as she dipped her head, still new enough to the coalition that she was unsure of her mentor’s proper title. This was the first time in her life that Yumemi had ever been picked for something, and it sounded strange to her ears even now. Her, the new Sage of Absum Lux? The eventual High Sage, Wanheda forbid that something happen to Pluto? She...didn’t really see it for her, but she’d be damned if she would just throw away an opportunity like this.
“So, um…” she murmured. “Is this...what you do all day? ...Sit in the dark?"
The tom rolled his eyes, the poor child had much to learn. “No, this is my nest. It is cold, and secluded, and dark. The only time you may step paw near it is in a dire emergency.” Slowly rising to a stretch, Pluto padded closer into an area with more light. “We need to learn herbs. I will not have you killing anyone for being unable to identify them and mixing those that should not be.”
Yumemi-kepa nodded enthusiastically, making a mental note to stay as far away from Pluto's side of the den as much as possible. "That's a really good idea!" she chirped, grateful that her new mentor had padded out a little bit more into the light - she'd never liked being unable to see what a cat looked like. If she couldn't see them, then how was she supposed see their reactions to her, so she knew she wasn't doing something undesirable? "I really don't want to kill anyone, y'know?" She had some prior medical knowledge from her days she spent as a wanderer, but a lot of it boiled down to "stick cobwebs where the red part is, and feed them one of those little seeds to shut them up". Finally, someone who could teach her something properly!
"Of course it is." He thought of it and it was only a logic idea to begin with, no need for the young one to it point out. Oh, clearly he'd have his paws full with this one. It was probably his main reason for putting off accepting an apprentice, their overeagerness to learn and get on his nerves. Pluto only has so much patience. "I would hope you wouldn't wish to kill someone. It would be greatly unappreciated for you to do so. Now, come this way." He padded towards a secure area that had just enough sunlight to showcase the herbs but not enough to ruin them by causing them to wilt quicker. "Do you know any of these? At all?" Pluto spoke with a tone that would say he wouldn't be surprised if the apprentice knew nothing. It was expected but he still had hoped that there be something he could work with.
"Uhhmmm...." Yumemi-kepa murmured. Of all the gaps in her knowledge so far, this one was probably the most obvious. "I don't know any of their names," she said with an apologetic tone, "because I just never really needed to, b-but I recognise a lot of them!" she added quickly. "Um, this one is what I would use for bellyaches, and reducing anxiety," she said, pointing a paw at a clump of purple-blue berries, "and I would use this yellow flower-ey one for treating infected wounds," she said, gesturing to said yellow flowery-ey plant. "And, it's good for decorating dens too, if you have extras!"
Well, she knew something at least. Better than nothing. Pluto frowned, "we will not be decorating the den with any of these." That was a big no-no. Herbs were to scare in winter and fall to be using them as decorations. They had a whole clan to tend too for crying out loud. Giving a growl and a huff, he started to the first row of the herbs, all neatly arranged and grouped based upon size and use. "Now repeat after me.These are juniper berries. We use them for bellyaches and pain." He pointed at the small purple berries, then to some dark seeds next to them. "Poppy seeds. Used to soothe distress and pain; useful for making a sick cat sleep. Soothes cats suffering from shock and distress. Not recommended for nursing queens, but can be given if necessary." Slowly, he went through the list, moving from the smallest to the largest. He'd tell their names, then their uses, and have her repeat them in hopes it'd help her learn them.
Yumemi nodded and went through the herbs laid out on front of them, repeating their names and uses like he'd said to. "Juniper berries for bellyaches," she began, "and poppy seeds for cats in shock..." She frowned suddenly. "Um, why is it a bad idea to give poppy seeds to nursing queens?" she asked, thinking back to that one time she'd given a nursing queen some poppy seeds to calm her down. "Does it...make the kits dumb, or something?" Please don't say it poisons them, please don't say it poisons them...
"It clearly made you dumb." Pluto rolled his eyes, his face a picture of disbelief. This was the cat he'd one day leave in charge? Oh, what had he gotten himself into? "No, it can lower their milk supply and cause the kits to become addicted to the seeds as young kits. That and they can not process them and it may kill them." While it was okay every once and a while, too much to a nursing queen and it'd have adverse effects. Anyone could tell you that.
"Oh, good!" Yumemj-kepa chirped. "I'm glad that family I met probably isn't dead, then." Her mood had instantly brightening despite Pluto's insult toward her. Hey, it wasn't her fault nobody had ever taught her poppy seeds and queens didn't mix! Given her lack of education, she was honestly even surprised she could count to a hundred. I wonder how high Pluto can count...Probably really high. Like, probably higher than a thousand, even. And it would probably only take him a few minutes. Pluto's so cool.
She shook herself out of her thoughts. She was excited to finally be provided proper tutoring from someone, and she wouldn't screw it up by going off on a tangent and getting distracted. "I, um, won't do it again though," she added hastily. "...Not to any Absum Lux cats, anyway. Hey, what about all these other herbs?" she asked, changing the subject.
They'd already been through the others, hadn't she been listening? Take a deep breath Pluto, she's young and knows not what you do. Pluto shook his fur, "well go over them again. These are cobwebs for bleeding, over there is yarrow for forced vomiting when dealing with poisons. Next, we have marigolds which stop infections, and coltsfoot that helps with kitten coughs and shortness of breath." She had so much to learn. Hopeful she didn't manage to kill anyone between now and when then.
Yumemi-kepa blinked, trying to process all the new information. Well, it wasn't completely new given that Pluto had gone through them all earlier, but she'd wanted to hear it again after being distracted by the whole I-almost-killed-a-whole-family thing with the poppy seeds. It had finally sunk in that she could do some real damage to other people's lives if she didn't pay enough attention to hew mentor. She nodded slowly, taking in the appearance of each herb laid out in front of them. "How do you know when to take someone seriously?" she asked. "Like, back when I travelled, sometimes people would ask me for help when they were clearly faking being sick, or they were just being a little...hysteric."
“I threaten them.” If only took once and that was usually enough. Pluto would mix dung or foil tasting plants in herbs mixtures for cats he knew were faking it. Most learned quickly but there were always a few that tried it again. It was a means he developed when her was an apprentice. One too many fakers and he’d had enough. “Most will do it as a means to test you, to see what they can get away with. Like sucklings if you will. But they have learned to not try that with me. You will need to develop your own threat to eliminate such actions.” Fear and knowledge made a good High Sage. That how Pluto functioned. They feared him both because of his obsession with death not what he’d had planned but hey it works even if he doesn’t realize that part of the reason they fear him and due to his foul tasting concoctions.
Yumemi-kepa's eyes widened. "You threaten them?!" she gasped. "That's so...cool. And I even get to develop my own threat?" Now that was the kind of creativity that Yumemi had signed up for! Her mind immediately filled with possibilities - most of them fairly lethal, which she belatedly realised probably wasn't a good idea if she wanted to keep any of her future patients. "...I'll think of something and run it past you, just in case" she muttered, averting her gaze. Yeah, probably not a good idea to tell Pluto her ideas before she'd had a chance to calm down and actually think about them.
"I gotta say dude, you're a really great teacher, y'know?" she added. "Even if we only actually started talking to each other today. But I mean, you've been mostly kinda patient with me so far, which is a lot more patient than other Absum Lux cats can be," she admitted.
(omg I love their relationship. Like she's just impressed with everything he does and he's just flabbergasted that she's the way she is. I'm like dying laughing cus she's all like dude and it's physically killing him that she's so informal and he's a formal stuck up kind of cat lol. Like "I am Death!" "Dude, that's cool.")
If he didn't skin her alive before she learned everything, it'd be an amazement. Oh, why Wanheda was she to be his apprentice? Pluto took a deep breath, "yes, well, if I killed you now I'd have to find someone else. Besides, this isn't something you can just learn all willy nilly like the combatants do things. Being a High Sage takes patience and perseverance as well as an understanding that those you are working with are imbeciles." He wanted to add that he believed her and their patients to be the imbeciles but he couldn't afford to run her off. No, he wouldn't be choosing another, he didn't have the patience to wait for Wanheda to make another selection.
( yumemi's having like a serious moment and pluto's like get this kid OUT of here xD )
"Regardless, thank you for not, um, killing me, as you say!" Yumemi-kepa chirped. She wasn't totally sure about the whole everyone-is-imbeciles thing that Pluto seemed to have going on yet, but then again, Pluto was like a million moons older than her, and he probably knew what he was talking about more than she did. "But if it's perseverance a sage needs, then look no further!" she added, with a wide grin. "I once followed a cat for two moons because I stole some flowers off them on accident, and I wanted to apologise. Eventually they told me I was being creepy and asked me to stop, but I didn't ever give up before that!"
(lol I know he's like banging his head against the wall and she's all what about this will this kill someone? Can we kill someone? How about now?)
Pluto slowly nodded his head, yes, she should be thanking him for not skinning her. At least she had dedication. She could be a quieter though, but he couldn't get everything he wanted. "Are you done? With the herbs?" He didn't mean her stories or past experiences or whatever she wanted to call..that. They had work to do and he only had so much patience for one day.
Yumemi-kepa nodded slowly. "I think I've got all these down..." she murmured, taking one last glance at all of them. "I can revise on my own later, anyway. Why, is there something even cooler you wanna do?" she asked, eyes wide with excitement. "...Or are you just looking for an excuse to get away for me? Because you could just ask me to go outside for an hour, and I'd totally go. Whatever you say goes, boss!"
Duly noted. "Yes, we need to gather herbs, and I'd like to have that done before the heat sets in." His fur was not made for hot weather. Pluto had dark forest brown fur, not something that meddled well with the summer heat. "Well be the one searching for what we needed." Both a test on her part and a means to which he wouldn't have to do as much work. A win-win situation in his opinion.
