Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Finn-kedi knew she wasnn't supposed to be this far from the camp of AL. However, the small cat had spent her first four moons being pretty much left to her own devices; rules were hard for her. Plus, she was impulsive, so even if she wans't used to slinking around where it felt good, dangerous behavior was behavior she was learning to enjoy. It made her feel better, in a weird way.
So there she sat, sitting on the ledge of an abandoned building that looked almost like it would give out under her weight. She looked at the city in the night, a chill running down her spine. Things were supposed to be different in the city, and they just weren't.
"Finn!" came a voice from nearby. Lane-kedi padded up from behind her, frowning in mock-disapproval. "What are you doing all the way out here? You'll get eaten by a fox or something." Truthfully she didn't care much at all about what her sister got up to when she wasn't around, but she wasn't sure what the consequences would be if their mother found out about Finn's little adventure. Either Shae simply wouldn't care and hope that Finn did get eaten by a fox, or she'd use it as an excuse to punish her - maybe all of them, even. If Lane-kedi was going to get punished like that, she at least wanted it to be her own damn fault.
She jumped at her sister's voice. It wasn't uncommon for her to jump at pretty much anything, as if she was afraid of the whole wide world. Perhaps, she was. Perhaps, even though she was so young, she had already been made aware that life was worth being afraid of. This was a sad statement, a sad reality if it were true. Once she recognized that it was her sister, though, the kitten let her fur lay down. "I.... needed some air," she meowed in response, voice slightly shaky. "And well ended up here."
"Well, it's good to know you're being environmentally conscious, at least," Lane-kedi chirped, considering her options. She wouldn't bring Shae up until Finn did. "Although there's some cats who I wouldn't mind if they ran out of air." Okay, maybe she would at least allude to her.
She squinted her eyes at her sister. “Why do you even care?” she asked with a thrash of her tail. “And how did ya find me, anyways?” Did her mother send Lane-kedi as a test ? She shook her head. So what if she did ? “Hopefully ma runs out of air one of these days. Sooner rather than later,” she then muttered under her voice, but mistakenly loud enough for her sister to hear.
Lane-kedi's eyes narrowed slightly at her sister's last few words, but her blandly-content expression otherwise did not falter. There had been a few days when Lane had shared a pretty similar sentiment - even if those feelings had long since been replaced with mere apathy, Lane could at least see where Finn was coming from. She'd rather it be her who bit the dust first rather than Shae, of course, but it was only natural for Finn to feel that way - and even more natural for her to express those feelings to a trusted third party (though Lane wasn't particularly thrilled that said third party was apparently her).
"She's our mother," she reminded her sister gently, though she did wrap her tail carefully around Finn's shoulders. Hopefully that would be interpreted as a comforting gesture, rather than making Finn feel trapped. "You know what happens to kits who talk about their mothers like that, don't you?"
Finn's pelt prickled when her sister touched her. This was a natural response, one that she tried to contain as much as possible when others came close to her. It was a sign of abuse, the fact that touch made her fear. She quickly forced her pelt back down. She's just trying to comfort you,she reminded herself. She's not Shae. Still, the brown pelt and blue eyes shared by the siblings reminded her too much of their mother. Would she ever be truly comdotable with those in her lineage? She wasn't sure.
"Hopefully they get fed to the dogs. Some days, I think that would be better than the crapshoot that is this existence," she meowed, a little bit melodramatically but also not. "I wish she wasn't our mother. I wish she wasn't Heda."
Lane-kedi winced internally, though her outwards composure remained largely unshaken as always. Truth be told, she felt the same way as Finn did; who wouldn't, in their position? It was nothing more than plain common sense, to see one's abuser stripped of their power, of their ability to hurt you as efficiently as possible. But if that way of thinking is perfectly rational, Lane thought to herself many a night, then why do I feel so guilty over it?
"There's no point in wishing those kinds of things," Lane murmured, talking past the steadily-growing lump in her throat. "Don't even daydream about it, if you can help it. You'll...wake up, and forget how painful reality is compared to the dream." Her gaze drifted past Finn and onto the ground beneath them, wondering if it would hurt much if she were to fall over the side of the ledge, how much it would hurt Finn if she took her sister with her. "...There's nothing we can do to stop it, so it would just be for the best if we could learn to live with it."
