Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Shadowfeather had only been among the Nightclan cats for a couple moons now and was still trying to learn the ropes of the clan. He was kind of overwhelmed with at first being handed an apprentice when he first joined and now he has to train a pair. He dragged himself out of the warrior's den, sliding his paw's lazily on the stone floor of the cave. He didn't want to train two apprentice's. He felt it was too much far too soon. However, he chose not to argue. Though living among the clan cats was hard work, it beat being alone and trying to survive as a rogue.
He poked his head into the apprentice's den and called out each of his apprentice's, "Shadepaw, Specklepaw, get up, now" he mewed in an annoyed and monotone voice. He waited for them by the waterfall screen, his tail twitching impatiently. He usually wasn't as gruff but recently, he had been under a lot of stress. He dealt with the earth quake after just arriving, then he was handed an apprentice, after that he was rejected by a she-cat, and then had to take on two apprentice's after finally getting over with one.
Specklepaw was honestly quite tired of being an apprentice. It was hard work and it was boring and he wasn't very good at any of it, and the other cats were mean to him and always tried to boss him around and he was tired and he just wanted to sleep and do what he wanted. At least he got to train with his brother now, that was an improvement, but only a slight one; Shadepaw was good at thing and he wasn't. The light gray tom huffed as he considered just staying in the den, but with a reluctant grumble he dragged himself to his paws. "Last one out of the den is mousemeat," he muttered to Shadepaw, then darted toward the entrance.
Shadepaw had been half asleep though his ears shot up at the call. "No fair!" He griped staggering to his paws and bundling outside some of the moss from his nest coming away with him as he tried to beat Specklepaw out. He managed to be out first by a nose. "Ha!" He said gleefully.
Shadowfeather's ear swiveled as the two apprentice's raced each other out of the den before his head turned toward them. He looked at Shadepaw and the trail of moss he left behind him but didn't say anything. He only shook his head, an annoyed look on his face. "Are my two apprentice's ready?"
Shadepaw kicked off the scraps of moss that clung to his fur and nodded his head vigorously. "Yes! I'm ready!" He declared puffing up his chest. "Teach me how to be a great warrior!"
"That's not fair!" Specklepaw yipped to his brother. "You cheated! You-- uh--- didn't wait for me to say 'go!'" He glared at his brother, sulking, and mostly ignored Shadowfeather other than a short nod.
"You didn't wait to say go!" Shadepaw retorted, "I pretty much woke up and you told me we were racing before making a run for the exit! Don't you tell me about fair," He said lifting his chin. "Better luck next time bro!"
"Thats enough" Shadowfeather puffed before heading toward the exit of the cave. "We are going to work on hunting today. Thats the most important thing to know. If you can't feed your clan, your clan can't have to strength to fight off any dangers."
Specklepaw growled and was preparing to tackle his brother when Shadowfeather called them off. He huffed, then stalked after the warrior with his head low and tail lashing, furious at his early defeat. "Yeah, okay," he muttered, not looking forward to any hunting.
Shadepaw didn’t mind the interruption, instead he lifted his head tail high and flicking side to side in excitement. Eager to show off whathe could do to Shadowfeather, “I’m a pretty good hunter! You’re going to be so impressed!” He boasted.
"I don't doubt it" Shadowfeather replied, slipping down the side of the waterfall with ease. He took a jump at the last step and landed elegantly onto the ground. "See that rock over there?" He pointed at a rock a few foxlengths away. "One at a time, I want each of you to show me your hunters crouch and stalking."
"I'll go first," Specklepaw volunteered instantly. He slipped past his bigger brother and bounded down to the rock, then crouched down a few tail-lengths away. He took a deep breath, then stepped toward it carefully, standing up straight but with his steps light. He slid across the ground, then broke into a spring and tackled the rock, scrambling to hold it in his paws as he tumbled head over heels clutching it tightly.
Interesting method.Shadowfeather thought. He had never seen a cat hunt like that. "Maybe if you were hunting rabbits but what if your prey sees you? You should be crouched and out of sight. Most prey look up every now and then to check for danger. They could see you stalking toward them and make a run for it."
Shadepaw nodded along to what Shadowfeather was saying, his tail swishing side to side as he barely contained himself to wait. Though his brothers antics made him sigh, why did he have to try to fight everything? IT seemed like every time he turned around his brother was getting into trouble with someone. Or trying too hard to be unique in places where the old ways made the most sense. It was better to just do what you were told and excel there then keep fighting every little thing and make everyone annoyed. But he held all that back and instead just continued to sit and wait impatient for his turn to show Shadowfeather that he could do it correctly.
"Then I'd chase them down faster," Specklepaw replied, but with a quiet sulk to his tone that signified he knew he was defeated. He couldn't outspeed a rabbit. The gray speckled tom said nothing more as he retreated a few steps and sat down to watch his brother do it. He thought his method was fine, but leave it to Shadepaw to do it perfectly on the first try, like always.
"You could certainly try, but you'd have to be like the fastest cat in NightClan to outpace a rabbit... not much open area for us to sprint around to build up that kind of speed." Shadepaw noted as he moved to do his attempt. He immediately slipped into the crouch he'd been shown during his brief time as Stonehill's apprentice and stalked up to the rock, before he pounced catching the stone between his two paws. His tail raised in excitement and he lifted his head to look at Shadowfeather to see how he thought of his attempt. "How was that?!" He asked.
"Your brother is right, Specklepaw. We don't have very much open space to build up that kind of speed." Shadowfeather added before watching Shadepaw do his demonstration. He watched as Shadepaw slipped easily into a crouch and stalked up to the rock. "That was perfect, Shadepaw! Well done!" He was relieved that he didn't have to waste extra time teaching Shadepaw how to hunt correctly alongside Specklepaw. Although he will have to work on Specklepaw's hunting crouch, it shouldn't take very long. The apprentice had potential. He just needed a little extra work in that area.
"Now that Shadepaw has done a perfect demonstration of a hunting crouch, why don't you try it again, Specklepaw?" Shadowfeather asked, beckoning with his paw for his other apprentice to try again.
Shadepaw puffed up his chest in pride, retaking his spot where he'd been sitting before practically beaming. He glanced over at his brother lifting his chin a bit. He'd done it perfectly, his mentors words warming him from ears to tail tip.
