A warm Greenleaf sun shone down on Ravenmask as he looked around the training hollow at the five apprentices assigned to Foxsnarl and himself. A slight breeze ruffled his gray and black fur giving his skin underneath a pleasant sensation. He felt especially privileged to be asked to help mentor a group. This was his second time at mentoring and hoped he would do well. Maybe it'll be easier doing this in a group, he thought as he watched the eager faces. There were Goblinpaw, Pygmypaw, Nifflerpaw, Giantpaw, and Lanayru. "Well, where should we begin?" he asked Foxsnarl. "Hunting skills or battle training?"

The ginger tom observed the group of young acts grimly. He had enjoyed mentoring in the past because of the bond formed between mentor and apprentice, and he wasn't convinced that could be easily replicated in a group this large. He understood why Ravenstar had made the change but the senior warrior preferred the old way of doing things. Maybe that's just a sign I've gotten old, he thought to himself, thinking back to when he'd been the fiery young innovative warrior.
"Let's do battle training. A group this large is too loud for hunting, we can split them up next time," he responded, content to let Ravenmask take the lead here.

"Good thinking," Ravenmask replied, wishing he had thought of that. He tucked that bit of knowledge in his mind for future use. Battle together, hunt in pairs. This is going to take some getting used to working with a group instead of just one but he was up to the challenge. Sensing that Foxsnarl wanted him to take the lead, Ravenmask stepped forward and announced to the group of apprentices, "Who's up for some battle training?"

Giantpaw let out a massive yawn, not used to being awake at this hour. Or really, any hour. "Are we going to fight another clan?" She asked innocently, concern glimmering in her green eyes. The thought of a battle was a bit scary. She wouldn't let the others know that she thought that, though.
Lanayru gave a determined nod. He had been prepping himself for this moment with Eldin. There was so much to learn, but he was willing to work hard.

"I am!" As per usual, Nifflerpaw was always up and ready to go, her large amber eyes wide as she bent, sniffing at the ground and taking in all of the overwhelming scents. She looked up at Foxsnarl and Ravenmask with admiration and curiosity. "What are we going to learn? Are we going to find some monster for fight?" She grinned, crouching and pouncing on a nearby stick, batting at it with her tiny brown brown paws as if she were battling an enemy.

Ravenmask smiled and chuckled a bit at the apprentice's comments. "No we're not going to fight another clan - at least not anytime soon that I know of - and we're not going to fight any monsters. Just one quick note though, never, ever try to battle with any monster on the thunderpath. They're way too big and will squash you before you even know it." He thought of the thunderpath that crossed their southern border and was glad it was the only one they had. "Lanayru, you and Nifflerpaw face each other. I'm going to show you a basic attack that all apprentices learn first. It's called the front paw strike." Ravenmask sliced downward with his front paw. "Like that. Strike fast then move out of the way. Now try it on each other but remember to keep your claws sheathed."

Giantpaw's eyes grew wide as he mentioned the monsters. She had never seen one before. Were they really that scary? She couldn't imagine a creature that big!" Once Ravenmask gave her denmates instruction, she focused on the two apprentices.
Lanayru's ears flicked up in surprise and he watched Ravenmask's movements carefully. His attention turned to Nifflerpaw and for a moment he stood frozen.

"Come on," Ravenmask meowed to both Lanayru and Nifflerpaw. "He who hesitates is lost. If you freeze in a battle, you give your opponent an opening. And that could spell disaster for you."

Nifflerpaw nodded, a determined look passing over her cute face as she turned to face Lanaryu at Ravenmask's encouragement. She jumped forward clumsily, swiping her sheathed paw over Lanayru's face well, dragged it downwards really, before stumbling over her own tail and landing in the dirt on her side. "Well... I tried." She said awkwardly, looking up at her mentors with large apologetic eyes.
Ravenmask sighed inwardly at Nifflerpaw's attempt but didn't show what he was thinking. "Yes, you did," he meowed. "Can you tell me what you did wrong?" He knew one of the best ways to learn is to figure things out for yourself. She did show potential and he hoped she'd do well in her training.

"Umm... everything?" She murmured shyly, a little embarrassed by her completely failed attempt. "I really lost my balance though, it was like I couldn't control my paws."
