Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
They ached in a way that was hard to explain, a dull throb that originated behind their sternum. At one point, they might have described it as a pressure, the kind of pressure that came with a tooth out of line. It wasn't so simple, though, and making it appear that way felt wrong the older they got. They had no other way to describe it, though, the pain that was a throb that was of undeterminable reality. No metaphor they considered accurately portrayed it. Everything came up short. So, like all of the other things Palebriar didn't have language for, they hid the pain deep in themselves. They did this a lot for a variety of things. They could remember their mother mocking them about it. Young lady, your melancholy makes the rest of the world want to die, you know that? Such memories brought the corners of their lips up into a half smile. The words had been white hot when they first exited their mother's mouth like a bullet from a loaded gun. Now, the words were reduced to slight burns, burns that barely blistered. Palebriar had succeeded in quelling those words, cyphoning their pain. One day, they would do the same with every other pain that they felt.
That day was not today, however, they knew that from the get go. They were on a mission today. A mutual friend had told them that there was a young cat that they needed to meet. Palebriar was not used to such a request. Most found them too monsterous to be around the younger cats. Perhaps this feline was old enough that their mother didn't mind. Perhaps the meeting was secret. Palebriar didn't really know. They knew very little about what was to come. Sootpebble had just told them that the cat needed a friend, needed someone to understand. Palebriar had an inkling as to what needed to be understood. They were not positive, though, and Sootpebble was known for having a trick or two up his sleeve.
Palebriar sighed, before stepping into the area of the territory that they had told Sootpebble to have the young cat meet them. An anxiety pricked in their paws, but they tried to blink it away. They had to stay cool for whatever was to come, right?
Eveningpaw brushed through pines and undergrowth covered in a thick layer of snow. It had been colder than normal for these otherwise warm months, though being WinterClan, of course, they couldn't get the luxury of seeing the sun and feeling its warm rays on their thick pelts. It made her rather sad honestly. With her pale black coat being able to soak up the suns rays and warmth better than most, she personally loved the sun. Others may not share her sentiment for warm weather, being in the Clan they are, but she loved it- no matter what anyone said.
This part of their territory seemed snowier than most. Maybe it was the way the mountain stooped and curved around here. She didn't know or care. All she was focused on was the fact that she had someone to meet, someone she had only heard of but never actually got the chance to speak to. Someone just like her, who was struggling to find themselves. Maybe they already had, and they could be of assistance to the student.
Pushing the pines and dead twigs out of her sight, she finally laid eyes upon the cat that had been waiting for her. They looked different than she had expected; they looked more like her, and she liked that. It made her smile and peridot eyes glimmer. "I'm sorry, were you waiting here long?" She asked in a hushed tone as if she had a secret to tell.
The cat's head snapped in the direction of the younger feline. It was a movement with snake-like speed and precision. That was how all of Palebriar's movements were; calculated and quick, but also rather intimidating. They hadn't always been that way. At one time, their movements were the same as anyone else. However, they had learned quickly that such slowness would do no good for them. It would only heighten the danger that their existence prompted. If one could move quickly, if one was light on their feet with a precision known to very few, they could survive.
Palebriar then smiled, a soft flick of the corners of their lips. "No, no," they meowed with a twitch of their tail. "I just got here, really." Their voice was deep, but not so deep that one would mistake it for the voice of a male. It was a tired voice, one that sounded almost gravelly. Their brown ear twitched. "And, even if I was, it's good to have some time to think before important meetings, hmm?"
They waved their tail to bring the apprentice closer. "You must be Eveningpaw, yes? My name is Palebriar."
She nodded slowly. "I've heard a great deal about you from my siblings and friends- especially Sootpebble." She smiled warmly as peridot eyes glistened in the dripping moonlight through the pines and spruce. "He said that... you're... we're alike?" She cocked her head and her face contorted slightly, trying to find the right words to say. The molly was never the best at choosing her wording, and she especially didn't want to make a horrible impression on someone she admittedly looked up to.
"Mother used to tell me that I was one of a kind; I'd never find anyone else who shares the same feelings that I do. I'm glad I'm able to prove her wrong- even if she can't see it." She tone had just a tad of sinisterness, a little glad she was still able to get the one-up on Valleystar even if she's missing in action- presumably dead at this rate.
They tilted their head. "Sootpebble told me the same about you, but said little else," they meowed with a blink. They were starting to piece things together, however still did not want to assume anything about the young molly in front of her. If they had learned anything about this life, it was that assumptions could be dangerous. It was assumptions of their own being that made them feel trapped, after all. They didn't want anyone else to feel that way, especially not a child.
"I'm glad you can prove her wrong, too," they meowed quietly, tail flicking. Their tone was thoughtful. Was that not the exact thing that their mother had told them? That there wasn't a way for them to ever find someone else? "We'll prove her wrong together, alright?" They rubbed their tail across her spine, a smile on her face. "We'll figure it out together, hmm?"
