Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
He slithered forward on his belly, tail waving low over the ground, gaze fixed on his prey. It was just a little bit beyond him when he set his paw down on a a pile of pine needles a little too quickly and they crunched. Specklepaw froze, but it was too late, and his prey stiffened, looked his way, and scurried off. The speckled gray tom bounded after it, but his steps were less confident as he struggled to weave through the narrow gaps in the bushes without getting any burrs in his coat, he was so tired of burrs in his fur, and the mouse was gone in an instant.
With a dejected hiss, the tom sat down heavily. "Get back here you piece of crowfood," he muttered.
"Bad luck?" Cypresswind asked sympathetically from her perch above the ground. She was commonly found in the tree's. Why? no one really knew. She was just a talented climber, and exceptionally talented at sneaking up on others when they were least expecting it.
The gray tom sputtered as he looked up at the she-cat, indignant and embarrassed. “What? No! It wasn’t bad luck, you must have scared it off by climbing up into the trees,” he shot back hotly.
"I've been up in the tree long before you began stalking that mouse. Try again." Cypresswind responded calmly, purring in amusement at Specklepaw's hotheaded retort.
"You probably disturbed some leaves and made it look up and see you." His ear twitched. "I don't really care how you did it, I know you scared of my catch!"
"Or, it was you placing your paws on those pine needles." Cypresswind shot back. She knew it was immature of a warrior to sit and argue with an apprentice over such a silly matter but she was thoroughly enjoying the amusement she was getting out of this.
Specklepaw tried to fake laugh, but it was hollow and awkward. "Yeah right. Nice story. Maybe next time make it more believable... or just admit it was your fault."
"What's not believable about my story, which so happens to be the truth? A young and inexperienced apprentice placed their paws on some pine needles and scared their mouse away. Do you argue with your mentor this much?"
"How in StarClan's name do you still have your ears? I would have clawed them off by now." She responded laughing. "But on a more serious note if you stop arguing with your mentor so much you'll probably learn a lot more and a lot faster."
"Who's getting their ears clawed off?" Squirrelleap asked, dropping down from a higher branch of a nearby tree to lounge on a branch just above Cypresswind, a squirrel held between his teeth. He made his way down from the tree and set his catch on the ground. "Also glad to see I'm not the only one who enjoys a nice perch on a high branch." He said with a bit of a purr. He glanced over at Specklepaw. "What's with the long face? Miss a mouse or something?" He asked.
Cypresswind stared wide eyed for several seconds at Squirrelleap. She hadn't noticed her Clanmate in the tree's above her and his sudden appearance startled her but she quickly regained her composure. "No one, yet." She responded lightly to Squirrelleap. "And the tree's make for excellent cover, you can see so much of what goes on from a higher perspective." she added, glancing to Specklepaw, waiting to see what his reaction was too Squirrelleap's question.
Specklepaw's angry response was drowned out by Squirrelleap's arrival. He fluffed up his fur and glared at him. "Only because Cypresswind scared it off! I would have had it if she wasn't here."
Squirrelleap frowned at Specklepaw but he nodded to Cypresswind. "Yeah it's how I got my name, using the branches to leap from tree to tree chasing after squirrels." His whiskers twitched despite the sad look that crossed his eyes.
"And Specklepaw, I'm sure whatever happened, we can go find some new prey to catch. How about you scent the air and see if you can detect some prey for us to go chase down?" He asked
He narrowed his eyes at the warrior, thinking hard, before he decided the offer was innocent and nodded. "Fine," he muttered, throwing a last sulky glare at the she-cat before he stalked off a few paces to sniff the air.
