Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Jasime sighed. Today was just like any other day. Watching the tykes, going to collect the ones that made it out of Post Kilo, and helping the origins in any way she could. There was something to be said about such a mundane life. Of course she didn't mind much, but sometimes she couldn't help but to wish there was something a bit more exciting for her. She'd spent her entire life as a member of the Regime, having been brought there by her father at a young age so that she could be raised by her family. She wasn't unhappy, but she was a bit bored. Perhaps it was time for a change of pace. It had been a while since she had walked the tunnels and she was sure her grandfather would enjoy a visit so after a moment the black she cat pushed herself to her paws and turned towards the entrance to Post Kilo.
Sean was back on his paws quicker than before. This year had been the worse year of his life which is saying a lot for the guy who literally almost destroyed the Regime as commander. His son had went on a mass murdering spree killing veterans, a queen, his own flesh and blood as well as mutilating kits. And now, right when things had seemed to be looking up, his mate Shule had vanished as well as his newborn kits. When his son murdered he fell into a depression, but when his mate and kits were gone he was sad for a week and suddenly was walking about, gossiping and telling people off like nothing had happened. Perhaps it could be seen as a bad coping mechanism if he hadn't murdered his first mate. And Shule was his fourth, possibly fifth mate, it seemed just a bit coincidental for the guy to be walking about like nothing ever happened.
When Jasmine turned around Sean was there, his God given body a glorified master piece of perfection genetics and unnaturally despicable luck, "Oh hey Jasmine, I was wondering if you wanted some toys for the tykes to play with. I made some for mine before they disappeared and all, but... I don't know it's been a while so I thought I should give them for other tykes to play with, y'know?"
His eyes were the killer, the ultimate eye contact of clover green glossed over with gilded under tones, he was the kind of cat to grow handsomer with age. A luxury to look at and a misfortune to talk to.
Jasmine jumped, not expecting to see Sean behind her. Of course she had heard a few rumors about him here lately. She had heard about how odd it was for him to have recovered from Shule's disappearance so quickly. She honestly found it a bit odd herself, but of course she wasn't going to buy into gossip and speculation. She felt sorry for him honestly. His mate and kits had vanished without a trace and so far to her knowledge, no clues had been found. The small black she cat offered him a kind smile. "Toys for the little ones are always appreciated. It is very kind of you to bring them here." Perhaps it was a bit odd that he was already prepared to give up toys that had been intended for his own tykes, but she really wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt until more evidence was found as to what might have happened to Shule.
Honestly, Jasmine had no idea how Sean might be feeling. Her life hadn't exactly been hard. She was the only daughter of Commander Mars and lived her life peacefully as a raiser. Her family was highly respected in the Regime even before her father had become a commander. She was small even for a Regime cat, but her father had told her that her grandmother had been small as well. As far as looks went, she was a copy of her father down to the little white patch on her chest. "How have you been as of late?" She knew it was a dumb question, but she was genuinely concerned so she just had to ask. Just for a moment she had found herself studying his eyes. He had pretty eyes. She wouldn't tell him that of course since she was sure he'd find it rather odd.
"I've learned I can't keep being sad. I've lost a lot of my family this year, but there's still family left to love, like Laurel's litter. I'm sure they'll appreciate the toys," Sean said, "I know I'm allowed to be sad that my son murdered so many, that my mate is gone and that my kits have also vanished. But I just can't keep living that way. I need to be happy. I'll always glance over my shoulder thinking every sound is Shule's and I'll look at these tykes and think, "I could have had this." But I can't think that way every hour of the day. So I'm trying to just be happy, and move on from it even if it's been a short mourning period," Sean confessed.
Sean had lost a lot. He lost his mom, ten of his kits, his mate. He had to look at San's cadets and know that they were without a mother because of his son. It was hard to not want to leave everything behind. It was hard to not just give up and meet the Blind Protector early. But he wanted to look on the bright side of things, "I'm probably going to go hunting right now." Being a mercenary always came to him first, being a scout was always a lot more difficult, but having been commander before he had eventually learned to do both.
She really did feel sorry for him. She didn't know everything that had happened in his life and she doubted there was really anything she could do to make things better. "I've heard Commander Mars mention sending out search parties for Shule. He's still holding onto hope that we can bring her home." While she knew that instilling false hope would definitely make things worse, but if the commander wasn't ready to give up then neither was she. Of course she wasn't supposed to have this knowledge in the first place, but she had heard her father mentioning it to Momi when he had come to Post Kilo to check on the tykes and visit her and Venus. Of course there were rumors beginning to spread that Mars might have another reason for visiting Post Kilo now, but she honestly didn't pay much attention to those rumors.
When he mentioned hunting, she looked back up at him. "Do you mind if I go with you? I'd honestly probably be in the way, but Commander Mars prefers that I have someone with me when I leave the tunnels." Of course the same was true of all raisers and guiders, but he was particularly strict with her. It was annoying honestly, but she tried her best to play along.
Sean nodded to the idea of a patrol looking for Shule. He wasn't sure what could have taken her. No signs of a struggle, Shule was skilled enough to do everything possible that if a cat were to attack or try to take her that she'd leave signs. He worried that it wasn't a cat, but a two-leg or a big predator like a bear because he couldn't even imagine a fox outsmarting Shule.
His eyes brightened, "Of course, I always accompanied my mom when she went to look for herbs, but Raisers need some sunlight too."
Sean talked back to everyone, but guiders he seemed just a bit more lenient towards. Unfortunately for Jasmine she was not a guider and therefore not safe from his catty nature. In an ironic way she was almost lucky he wasn't in a happy mood to insult people, but then again no one should underestimate his ability to insult others.
"Thank you. I promise I'll try not to get in your way too much. I really just enjoy the fresh air above ground." She often went for walks, but having to find someone to go with her could prove difficult so she usually just ended up tagging along with someone else who was on their way out of the tunnels. Perhaps they might even find a trace of Shule up there. It wasn't very likely in all honesty, but she wasn't one to give up hope that easily.
He grinned and flashed back his usual over confident smile, "Don't even worry girl," but his once pompous arrogant voice just wasn't oozing out of the words like they used to. He was silly, Shule was serious, but now it seemed there was a rain cloud that couldn't exactly leave him.
Light swelled up the darkness around them as the scents of grass and wet moss filled the air as they neared closer to the entrance. For Sean it always reminded him of the moments he used to go collect herbs with his mom. Everyone thought he would grow up to be a guider like her because he was so helpful, but when Lilith became a Spy he felt the need to compete. Having been trained to hunt and fight due to his past as a commander it felt too weird to randomly switch to guider now. Plus there was such an intensity inside him to protect, even if he did like walking among the green and the finer surface scents, it was nothing compared to his devotion towards the Regime that he felt he needed to prove at all moments. It was why he had three scars on his chest, back when commanders would literally brand their loyal sentinels across the chest. (or maybe they still do I don't know? xD)
"I've always loved coming above ground. I love the Regime with all my heart, but at times it is nice to get a bit of fresh air." She would never leave her home in the tunnels, but she did enjoy taking walks on the surface when she could manage it. She glanced back up at Sean after a moment. She wished there was something she could do to help him, but she honestly didn't know him well enough to know what might cheer him up and perhaps there was nothing she could do. After all, a lot had happened here recently. "What were things like in the old tunnels, before the Regime had to move?" It was a random question, but perhaps a distraction would help. Well, there was that and the fact that she was genuinely curious. She had heard stories of the great tunnel collapse, but she still hadn't heard much of how the Regime had changed since coming to this new set of tunnels.
"Things were great until I became leader. I didn't think I was going to become commander, but people pass and when you're the only superior you're made in charge. I knew I wouldn't do a good job so I neglected it, but no one ever came up to lead. I married a girl because it felt right and found a guy I loved and once again it was my fault that a second litter of kits lost their mother. I was a wreck and the only rock in my life was Pebble. We discovered Avalon Everlasting, I found the sacred scarf and reunited the ancestors, but it wasn't enough. The Blind Protector didn't truly approve of me and I broke everything apart, an earthquake hit and after that I knew I had to pass on my title to someone else. And then he moved us. Before cowards and people who felt they knew best were made commanders we were... Boring," He grinned, "We would hangout pretty much only underground, we barely had any tykes, nothing interesting happened because we never explored. I don't know, it was peaceful, but not really living, but it wasn't the Renegade way to rebel against that. I do miss having an amazing underground city, that's for sure. I think it was stupid not to move into that," he laughed.
Jasmine listened quietly, her eyes beginning to show a more sympathetic look. She honestly doubted that anything she said would make anything better for him. After all, she was just a young Raiser and her life honestly hadn't been that bad. She had been born into a well respected family, her father was currently the commander and the most trouble she ever dealt with was a tyke getting ill or refusing a nap. Even so, she felt bad for him. She did want to help somehow. "Well just because that is how we used to be doesn't mean that is how we will always be. We can explore the new tunnels. But, I've honestly never heard of the Underground City. What was that place like?"
"Oh it was awful. There were big cats, rabid bats, lost cats, the whole city was unsteady, there were also creatures under there like foxes and badgers wandering around. Mercenary cadets were forced to enter and spies would watch their movements carefully to see if they passed. But no one could be a mercenary unless they remained in the underground city for a certain length of time. I had to do it to become sentinel and then it sucked more because back then you'd get scarred against the chest three times and it had to scar. Not to mention the dens were set up where mercenary cadets intentionally got rained on from the surface and cold winds in the den to roughen them up. It was honestly borderline abusive, when I was commander I really didn't want any of my kits becoming mercenaries and then they pretty much all did. It really wasn't even that long ago that we were doing it," Sean said with a slight look of shame, "I really hope we don't ever go back to those times."
He walked out of the tunnels and onto the grass as he spoke.
"That sounds awful! Why would you want to live somewhere like that?" She had never heard stories of the Regime's past like that, but was this how her father had grown up? He didn't talk much about his days as a tyke and cadet. "I don't think we will go back to doing something like that, especially not with Commander Mars. He would never make our young go through something like that." She was really glad they hadn't moved into this city, but it also made her even more curious as to what it had looked like. Of course she'd only worry her father if word got back to him that she was asking about that so for now, she would leave that topic be.
"Yeah, but the city was beautiful. It was simply a must see. Not everyone wanted the task to explore it, but everyone certainly wanted to take a safe glance down the entrance to it. The first block as kittypets call it was safe. Yeah the Regime sucked back then and it sucked when it was first made. More like a cult really. She-cats hardly had any rights back then, they couldn't become mercenaries or scouts because only a tom could become commander and only a she-cat could become chaman. I only know because that's what our ancestors told me. As far back as I've been alive I only knew female commanders for a long time until recently," Sean admitted, "But I think she-cats do it best, shh," He winked at her carrying on walking, after all if he died now, no one would know that kind of information. He was one of the few commanders that he knew that encountered so many ghosts of the pasts. He figured it was because he was the most helpless and needed the most guidance.
"That's...Surprising. She honestly wouldn't have ever guessed that the Regime used to be like that. It sounded simply awful. There were plenty of she cats that were mercenaries and scouts now. Their Mercenary Superior was a she cat even. She had to smile at what he said. She had never known a she cat commander since she had been born under Fjord's time as commander, but she had never thought much on it really. "It must have been nice to learn so much about our past though. Even if it isn't a respectable past, we need to know of it so we can learn from it. Otherwise we're going to keep making the same mistakes right?"
"That is true, the Regime has grown a lot. Though honestly, it was incredibly annoying to see ghosts of our pasts, they were all so judgmental. And Mars doesn't even get to be criticized by a single one! Why I was on the after life's scratch post?" Sean let off a scoff that turned into a laugh, "Avalon's ancestors were so much nicer. There was a commander before I who discovered a few of them, but I was the one that found their old territory. In fact, I have their sacred scarf under my nest, legend has it the leaders of Avalon Everlasting all wore the blue scarf, but I don't know. I kept it cause I was convinced if it was ever ruined that their spirits would unravel like the threads made up in the scarf. So out of superstition I kept it. Anyway, super personal question, you don't have to answer, have you met anyone lately? But seriously, I'm asking for less creepy reasons, Renegade didn't allow outsiders for such a long time that I've noticed cats options seem to be... Very narrow."
