Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
He had come to get a drink of water from the river, but when he stepped out of the brush on the shore he was startled to see there was already a small hare lapping at the surface. Their eyes met and they were silent and still, hunter and prey.
He moved first.
Wyverndelirium sprang, hurling across the ground as the hare turned and fled. His paws slipped along the bank as he twisted and chased, then dove forward and tackled his prey. They tumbled and rolled but he refused to let go and a hard bite finished off the hare. The golden-brown tabby lay panting and then winced as he shifted his shoulder. "Of course I had to wrench my shoulder chasing the first prey I've seen today," he complained with a shake of his head, not seeming all that bothered.
He looked over at the spiky she-cat with a fleeting proud grin. “Thanks,” he replied, slowly pushing himself to his paws and testing his shoulder. It stung, but that would fade; there was no lasting damage done, luckily. “I thought I was going to hurt myself chasing that one.”
She nodded, having noticed his falter. “Are you going to be alright? Should I get Goldrush?” Her eyes seemed to flash with worry, her tail curling as she felt a slight prick of anxiety within her.
“I’ll be fine,” he reassured her. “Just need a minute to work it out again.” He walked in a slow circle and his steps evened out. “There, that’s better. I just pushed myself a little too hard trying not to catch that. I wasn’t even trying to hunt, to be honest.”
The feline gave a small nod, letting the subject go. Wether or not he was really okay, it was not her place to push a cat to do something they did not want to do.
“I was just out on a walk.” She mewed, giving him information he’d never asked for.
“So was I,” he told her with a laugh. “I was going to get a drink and ran into the rabbit instead. Got a little more than i bargained for.” Wy grinned. “You didn’t chase it there, did you?”
“Maybe I did!” She couldn’t help but joke. The tom seemed to have a happy demeanor about him, bringing out a good mood in herself, despite having no real reason to smile at the moment. It felt.. nice.
Wy smiled too. “Then thanks for the help! We make a good team,” he joked. “Maybe we should go hunting sometime.” He had finally caught his breath, so he picked up the prey and trotted over to bury it in the shade of a willow.
Her eyes seemed to sparkle for a moment, she didn’t move but only watched him. Finally she rolled her shoulders in a shrug,”Well, you don’t seem busy right now.” Puddlestomp won’t be happy. ... Puddlestomp isn’t your mate anymore.
“Absolutely!” Her tail gave a swish as she made her way towards the tom. “Lead the way. I’m itching to make myself useful today, I wasn’t chosen for the patrols you sent out.” She snorted, raising a brow at him since he was currently responsible for them.
“Sorry.” He grinned. “I’ll get you tomorrow.” Wy shook his head as he started to lead her back toward the river. “I have to admit it’s harder than I ever imagined. There’s so many cats to think about.” He had grudging respect for his brother for figuring it out. Of course, Wy had the extra challenge of trying to keep an eye on who seemed upset about Wy assigning patrols and who seemed glad their deputy was gone.
She nodded. Bulrushfur hadn’t been too fond of Chimerahunt, and was shocked to see him as deputy upon her return to the clan. Though, she tried to stay out of the way as much as possible, just fearing for smart remarks form the deputy. Bulrushfur has already had enough to deal with between Puddlestomp and Egretfeather and Cranedance.
“Is it hard, acting as deputy?” She inquired, eyes glistening with curiosity.
“Somewhat,” he admitted, “but it’s rewarding. It’s a little hard to get cats to listen sometimes since I’m not officially deputy, but I’m learning.” He hadn’t anticipated how well he would take to the role. It wasn’t easy, but it felt good, being respected and helping take care of the clan. “I know it sounds terrible, but.. I’m kind of enjoying it, and I’ll be disappointed when Chim comes back. I’ll be glad to have my brother come home from wherever he is, but...”
“He doesn’t deserve the spot.” Bulrushfur mewed bluntly, her shoulders shrugging. “He May have stepped up some when the sickness came, but that doesn’t mean he deserves it. A lot of cats stepped up.” A lot of cats left like you did, Bulrushfur. The thought crept in, making her feel a bit guilty.
Wyverndelirium blinked, surprised to hear her say it so bluntly... but he agreed. “I agree,” he told her. “I love him but this isn’t right for him, or any of us. He isn’t meant to be a deputy or a leader.” He groaned. “Violetstar is young, she’ll probably outlast him, but....” He couldn’t imagine Chim as a leader. He didn’t want to try.
“She herself is far too young to be a leader, but I suppose she is what we are stuck with.” Bulrushfur shrugged her shoulders, eyes glancing towards the tom. “She’ll definitely outlast her deputy. Most leaders do tend to outlast their first few deputies.”
Wy shifted. It felt far more treasonous to doubt his leader than his brother, even if he couldn't help but wonder if she was right. "She has a good heart and she will be a good leader," he meowed slowly, "but she hasn't made enough mistakes as a warrior to know when she is being incompetent instead of clever." Violetstar may think she was doing the right thing with Chim, but if she had more experience, she would know better than to place her trust in such a shifty individual.
