For days storms had visited the clan by the waterfall. The rushing water roared into an ever-growing pool. It was powerful. Riverwolf could feel it in his muscles. It was like the rushing, pounding water was living under his skin. His pale grey coat was hardly visible against the storm clouds that mulled overhead. His brown eyes matched the muddy ground underneath his large paws. Riverwolf smiled up at the darkness that loomed above Waterclan's camp. He was truly made for this clan. He was the god they needed. A deep sense of longing pulled his paws towards the rock that Violetstar lead the clan meetings. Oh how he longed to sink his claws into the moss that grew on it and command his clan. "One day." He murmured softly before glancing around for the tortoiseshell leader. His plan was only beginning to hatch. He had to be careful... His eyes sharpened as they met her form next to Rainpaw. Ah, that loyal, daft apprentice. He would be one of his first victims if the need arose. Placing the kindest of smiles on his maw, he padded forward. "Good evening, Violetstar." His greeting was warm but claws of ice gripped his heart.
She had just been talking to Rainpaw about their most recent training session. Her shoulder was touching his just slightly, a sign that the two were definitely a close pair, and couldn’t have been more perfect for the mentor and apprentice relationship. Violetstar was smiling softly as she spoke to her apprentice, and then was suddenly hearing her name. She turned slightly, purple eyes gazing upon one of the few whom had survived the sickness. Violetstar had never forgotten how brave Riverwolf had been, starving for days on end to feed the others. “Riverwolf, hello.” Violetstar was always known as a kind leader to her clan, seemingly having no mean bone in her body. Unless her clan were threatened. Then it was another story...
“Is there something I can help you with?” Her ear flicked to Rainpaw, signaling that they could finish their conversation another time.

Rainpaw nodded and began to make his way to the apprentices den to rest.
"He is an intelligent tom, hm?" He questioned, flicking his tail towards the blue-grey apprentice with a warm gleam in his deceiving coffee eyes. It was a shame the young tom was not bright enough. He dismissed the thought before turning his attention back to the leader. His spirit cackled at the trust in her gaze. It wouldn't be long before he had her doing his bidding. All things in time... He sat down and curled his bushy tail around his paws. "The storms have sent a lot of prey hiding in their holes. I was going to see if you weren't too busy to hunt with me? I would ask the others but I feel like they need rest." The white lie tasted sweet on his tongue and he cleverly nodded towards a pair of worn-out warriors. He forced a shy look over his features and glanced down at his paws. "I also thought it might be nice to spend some time with you. It has been a while."
Violetstar let her gaze travel towards her retreating apprentice. She nodded lightly in agreement to the warrior. “Yes, he is very smart. He’s almost ready to become a warrior.” Pride shone in those oddly-colored eyes of hers. It was clear she cares for the tom immensely. Finally she would turn back to Riverwolf, listening to his words as he spoke. Another nod of agreement about the weary warriors, and then she found herself wanting to quirk a brow with curiosity at his last statement, but managed to keep her face solid.
“I don’t see why not. We can head out and see if we can find any land prey, since the waters are over flowing at the moment.” A kind smile dimpled her features.

Riverwolf smiled.
She took the bait. Not that it was that difficult. Honestly, he would have been surprised if Violetstar turned him down. What kind of leader would she be if she didn't want to feed her clan? Ah, yes. His concerns for the clan's well-being were true to some extent. He needed fresh, well-fed warriors by his side. No god can rule without fit soldiers to do his bidding. He knew her intentions were more "honorable." At least, that is what some would say. She wanted a well-fed clan because she cared for them. The thought sent a tingle of disgust down his spine. Leaders could only get so far with "caring." No, the clan needed a demanding presence. They needed a god.
"That sounds wonderful. I imagine that the voles will be on the move today since their homes are buried beneath the water and mud now." He laughed, continuing his friendly facade.
Violetstar felt a little bad that she would be heading out without Rainpaw. Though, she knew there would always be other days. The young tom knew she was always busy as a leader. Still, sometimes she couldn’t help but feel a little guilty at not being the best mentor... she made a small note to make sure she went out with him tomorrow.
As they then began to make their way from camp, Violetstar carefully made her way across the stepping stones form behind the waterfall. Once her paws landed on the sandy bank, she began to walk further into the grasses of the forest. She would wait for the tom to catch up, so that they could walk side by side.

For a moment, Riverwolf admired the way the leader moved gracefully through the Waterclan camp. She would make a good pawn. Now Chimerahunt... That was a different story. He was still plotting out how to handle the gloomy deputy.
He caught up to her quickly, making sure not to slip into the waterfall. Of course, it was easy for someone who was destined to rule a territory to adapt to it. His many moons of stepping across those same stones had taught him where to step and when to leap. The roar of the rushing water now behind him, he matched his pace to Violetstar. "How have the past few moons been treating you? I know how tough it has been to recover from the sickness and rebuild." He asked with a concerned look. Small talk, small talk. That was really all he needed to start with. It was better not to rush the plans.
She’d been through so much in the past season. Hadn’t any cat whom had survived the epidemic of ripple cough? It was hard to remind herself that she was not the only cat whom had lost everything during those torturous moons. It was a lot to come to terms with, and she often had to remind herself that she was not the only cat living in pain.
She missed him, every day of every waking moment. Sandtail didn’t deserve to go. Never had. Then... she lost their kit. The only chance she had of having anything close to him, died the moment she went into labor. Lavenderkit had been beautiful. The most beautiful cat she’d ever seen, and she had never breathed a single breath of air. Taken straight to StarClan, pure innocence.
How had the past few moons been treating her? It was a cruel question she would be forced to answer with what was not the full truth.

Riverwolf could sense she was not telling the complete truth. Who could be fine after so much heartache? She may act tough and guarded, but he knew where her weaknesses are. He would need to play on those as much as possible. Yes, he had to make her fall in love with the idea of him.
“It has been difficult, to be honest.” He sighed, putting on the best mask of grief he could offer. It was actually pretty convincing. “After the death of my sister and my first apprentice, Reedpaw, I found it difficult to stay on my paws. Reedpaw was so close to becoming a warrior. She was so strong and daring. There was nothing she couldn’t do.” He trailed his eyes to his paws. It was sad the loss of his family and the young, beautiful she-cat he had trained so it wasn’t too difficult to appear torn-up about it. What made the situation even more relatable was that Reedpaw had been good friends with Rainpaw before her untimely death. Riverwolf felt no remorse using the cat’s death as a sob story, though. She had been a hot-headed apprentice and would have been an even more difficult warrior to win over.
As they walked along the forest, she listened to his words and felt a pang of grief. The cats they had lost would be forever etched into their hearts, and speaking to another about her losses was hard. Hard and almost impossible. It was then that she realized she had never spoke a word to a single cat about the ones that she herself had lost. Even Sandtail’s sister, Ottermystique, she would change the subject.
Violetstar had not yet been able to express her heart to another.
The tortoiseshell feline paused in her tracks, her head turning slightly to look at the tom.
“I miss them. The cats who... who passed.” Her voice ached, and cracked as she spoke.

With that, a fire lit up in his belly. She had grabbed the prey.
Riverwolf brushed his pelt against hers for reassurance. He inwardly cringed at the gesture. Gods shouldn't touch peasants, but it was a necessary action. "I do too..." He murmured softly as the wind picked up slightly. It was a nice, dramatic cue from nature. Perhaps that meant the world was on his side? He was aware of her former mate, Sandtail, and his passing. He would have to tread lightly on that knowledge. "You miss him the most, don't you? I am very sorry. I couldn't imagine how lonely that grief was. It would be difficult to talk about, so I understand if you don't desire to. Just know you are not alone, Violetstar." His words were soft and careful.
The touch of his fur felt like fire. It was confusing just how warm it was, but all the same it felt wrong. As if she were betraying Sandtail. Her lips pressed together as she tried to work out the odd array of emotions that were suddenly coursing through her being. Before she could respond, his honey laced words made her muscles relax and her thoughts diminish. Violetstar breathed in softly as she gave the smallest of nods. “Thank you, Riverwolf.”
