ELOUISE • BIO • 24 moons • Guider {{ The Garden }}
The soft murmur of guider's speaking to their patients and trickle of water into the small pool at the back of the Garden had lulled Elouise into a doze, her eyes only half-open and breathing even and deep. She'd stayed up the previous night attending to a tyke in Post Kilo with a pretty severe case of a cold and had missed her own night's sleep as a result. Still, the she-cat knew she owed it to her group to work and work hard, so after allowing herself a few minutes of rest, she shook herself out of the daze and began to sort herbs again.
As she worked, her thoughts wandered. It had been a long time since she'd seen any of her family. Even Anguis, who lived and worked in the same post as her, seemed to be gone more frequently than he was there. Sometimes she wondered where he went, but something always came up and drew her attention elsewhere. Now, however, she looked up from her work to try and find her older brother amidst the crowded floor of the Garden, searching out his trademark black and white fur.

His eyes frantically moved from cat to cat in the Garden. What if they saw him sneaking away to be with Snowflight again? Worse, what if they saw her?! Oh, the thought was just unbearable. Surely they would kick him out. He would be banished from the Regime forever and starve out in the forest. Or they could kill him? His eyes widened in terror at the thought. Anguis shook his head in self-pity. They would surely figure out if he kept dashing around and worrying like a lost kit. The patched tom narrowed his eyes as he searched among the plants for more feverfew and goldenrod. His stomach sank as he realized most of the storage was gone. That meant he would have to venture to the top again and leave Snowflight all alone...

If his fur didn't give him away as the cat she was looking for, the deep furrow between his brows and worried expression surely did. "Anguis!" Elouise smiled softly as she bounded to her older brother's side, nuzzling his shoulder. "I haven't seen you in ages. You look worried - can I help?" She saw his gaze go skyward and she only assumed he was nervous about going top-side so soon after the attack. "I can come with you, or I can find a mercenary if you'd prefer. It'll be okay Anguis. Commander Mars won't let anything happen to us."

Anguis nearly jumped out of his fur as Elouise's voice entered his thoughts. "A-a-ah, El-el-elouise!" He blurted, clearly frazzled by her sudden appearance even though he should have scented her a long time before that. "Hello. Ah, I-I mean I'm just generally worried soooo..." His voice trailed off but it was clear he was nervous. He let out a sigh as an attempt to calm himself then nodded. "It would be nice to have company, and, like you said, it has been a while since we've seen each other." He knew very well that it was because of Snowflight... What if Elouise knew about her?

"You dork," purred Elousie, nudging his shoulder with her head playfully. "I know you're always nervous, but you're acting especially weird. Let's hang out, catch some sun, and see if that helps you feel better. Otherwise I might have to ask Superior Lark to have you put on bedrest." She knew the threat of being stuck in a nest all day would snap him out of it and laughed teasingly. "Once we get topside, though, I want a full explanation of what's going on, okay?" Her voice took on a slightly lower register and her eyes showed the lack of playfulness in the command. She was a little worried about him, but she'd give him the chance to tell her first.

His heart seemed to plummet to his stomach. How would his sister face him knowing the truth? "O-oh, okay." He responded, managing a little, nervous laugh. His thoughts drifted to Axenus and Angela. Had they also noticed his absence? The thought of facing all of his siblings at once was daunting. He felt bad for hiding it from them, though. He fought hard to force the thoughts away and simply focus on their walking. "So, what new has happened with you?" He asked, smiling gently at Elouise. Despite his constant anxiety, sometimes Anguis acted like a normal cat.

Elouise cut him some slack, realizing he might not want to spill his inner soul surrounded by other cats in the Garden. Once they got alone on the surface, she'd push. For now... "Nothing much, really," she replied, her voice bouncing off of the tunnels as they began the somewhat long journey to the surface. "I've only just gotten some rest since the SunClan attack. I just can't understand how a clan can attack another group for no good reason. Who benefited from such a senseless act of violence?" She shook her head sadly, clucking her tongue. "But it's passed now, and other than a few particular cats, I think we're mostly out of the woods."
She considered her own personal life and found that she came up... blank. She didn't really have a personal life, to speak of. No close friends, crushes, or even rivals. She had basically given herself over to her work ever since she got promoted, finding it easy to take companionship with the herbs than struggle to makes friends with actual cats. Thankfully, she was always comfortable around her siblings and didn't ever have trouble opening up to them. She gave Anguis a small, grateful smile before turning back to the front, searching for the gleam of light that would mean they were almost there.

Anguis tensed at the mention of the Sunclan attack. His loyalty to the Regime was true, yet he felt like he was betraying the group he had called family for so long. But were they truly family? The question sometimes haunted him. It was no secret that Evermore had never been a kind, loving cat. In fact, she was quite literally the opposite. Their grandmother, Manchester, was just as evil as her. It was fortunate that they had former commander Brighton in their line... Still, Anguis had never felt comfortable in his own skin. Axenus, Angela, and Elouise had all found their niche. At least, that is what he thought.
"Elouise. Do you think the Regime...likes us?" He asked hesitantly. He felt a bit of shame imposing such a question on his younger sister, but he had to know the truth. "Our mother always hated us..."

"Likes us?," she asked, stopping in the middle of the tunnel suddenly. "I-I-" She found she was unable to give an automatic answer as she suspected other cats would be able to. Her tongue grew tied when she attempted to make the factual statement that yes, the Regime did like them. It had taken her moons and moons and the warm support of her partner as a cadet to get the she-cat to open up and trust anyone because of her mother's neglect and general hatred for her. She couldn't even think her name, it was so much like oil in her mind. Insidious and pervasive, if she gave it even a fraction of a thought it would cover her up and consume her.
"I think they value us," she replied after a moment, knowing, at least, that this statement was accurate. She had heard on more than one occasion how grateful the others were for her help or Anguis's healing. As for liking them... She hadn't even allowed herself to consider making a close friend or, even worse, taking a mate. It was as Anguis said, they were other, outsiders born within.
She was at a loss for what to say after that and just leaned against her brother's side, offering him the comfort of her proximity and warmth. When they were tykes they would curl up together in their nest in Post Kilo, something she found herself missing at times when the loneliness of the Garden grew too great. She inhaled his scent deeply, allowing it to calm her, when she caught a trace of something else...something not dirt and darkness and Regime. She tensed and stepped back, not saying anything only looking at him as though she were betrayed.

His heart sank to his stomach, which seemed to sink even further down his bony frame. She scented her. He was sure of it by the look on Elouise's face. He fought for words and the anxiety that threatened to bubble over. What if she hated him for not telling her? What if she went and told Meepo? Or Roon? OR SHULE. The thought sent spirals of chaos through his brain. They would surely kick him out. And what would they do to Snowflight? He would have no family left, no friends, and no way to fend for himself. His fighting skills were rough, to say the least, and he was frightened of everything. No, he wouldn't make it more than three sunrises on his own.
Anguis was so lost in his fearful thoughts that he completely forgot Elouise was standing there, clearly hurt and confused.
