Lanaryu felt the stones give way underneath his paws as he tumbled up the pebble mountain he had made. The golden tom watched as the other kits slept nearby and silently prayed that the tumbling of stones wouldn't wake them. He had just wanted to see what it felt like to be tall.. He winced as a few of the pebbles clattered against the ground.
"If subtlety's what you're going for, you're going to want to try harder than that." The drawling voice of a familiar tom sounded somewhere close to the young one's ear before an orange tabby pelt slunk from the shadows, having been observing the kit's antics with amused amber eyes. He tilted his head, regarding the little one. From his vantage point atop the rock pile, they were just eye to eye. "I'd ask what you were doing but in all fairness I don't care. I will ask, however: does your mother know?"

His heart sank to his stomach as the orange tabby appeared. He hadn't meant to wake anyone up, especially not someone older than him. Lanayru opened his mouth to speak but no words managed to come out. "I'm really sorry... I was trying to be quiet." He responded while scuffing one paw shamefully on the ground. "I don't have a mother. It's just Eldin, Faron, Ordona, and I."
Maplenose was the first cat to wake up, drowsy amber eyes blinking open as they adjusted to the darkness. Amberkit and Quartzkit were huddled at her side, sleeping peacefully. Luckily, whatever that noise was, it didn't disturb her kits. With a grunt, the tortoiseshell feline lifted herself to her paws, finding the source of the noise and catching sight of the two. Carefully weaning herself between bodies, she approached them, eyes narrowed. "Do you know what time it is? What are you two doing awake?" She said in a hushed voice.
Labyrinthiansoul had been regarding the kitten with a guarded, amuses gaze, but when Maplenose padded forward, for allintent and purpose to scold the two of them, he leaned back on his haunches with a crooked grin. “Little Lanaryu here decided he wanted to be the first to climb Mount Tiny here.” He glanced at the pebbles as they tumbled away in the wind. “Ah, better luck next time sport. Maybe when you’re bigger you can become the first explorer to build a boulder.”

Lanayru could feel the heat of shame and embarrassment burning at his ears, but he held his head high. The golden tabby was young and peaceful, but he also knew how to hold his own. "I was just trying to see the world from your point of view. It isn't very impressive, really." He responded, fighting the quiver that threatened to break through his voice. "I'm sorry, Maplenose." He added, turning to the she-cat with sincerity in his gaze. "I was trying to be quiet, but I should have worked harder."
Gazing at him with knowing eyes as he listened to the tom's rebuttal, Labyrinthiansoul barked out a laugh, genuine amusement flickering across his face and seeming to remove age lines instantly. It was as if he was a young warrior again, his amber eyes twinkling in mirth. "Not bad, kid, not bad." He glanced at Maplenose as the kitten quickly lost his nerve and apologized. "Aaaand there it goes."
And then, a smile graced Maplenose's lips, a look of sympathy passing in her amber eyes. "It's okay, Lanayru," She purred, dipping her head down and rasping her tongue over the kit's head. "I was like you, once. Curious with a craving for adventure. Trust me, love, your day will come when you are no longer a kit nor an apprentice, but a brave, mighty warrior. Just don't take things too fast. You'll wish you would've gotten a longer kithood than which you've received."

Lanayru glanced shyly at his paws, grateful that they weren’t angry with him but still feeling guilty. He didn’t want to go back to sleep. The dreams were just too frightening. “I-I can’t sleep.” He admitted quietly. The thought of facing those terrible nightmares again was too much.
