The tunnels are awfully chilly this afternoon, thought Cadet Elyria as she descended deeper into the bowels of the Regime's tunnel system. Clutched in her mouth was a small bundle of herbs, fragrant and fresh, wrapped in a large beech leaf for easier transportation. She knew what she was doing would be considered wrong by Commander Mars or any of the other superiors, but she couldn't just let a group-mate - disgraced though he might be - and a cat fresh from the battlefield rot in the Prison alone without medical care.
She didn't know much, but she was confident she would be able to patch up whatever minor wounds they might have. What kind of justice would they get if they were mad with fever during their trial? The strong scent of the herbs stifled her ability to scent any other approaching cats, a fact that proved to be her downfall.
"And just where do you think you are going?" The strict voice of Diana sounded out, breaking the silence that had fallen over the tunnels. Her voice held a commanding tone and she carried herself with an air of dignity. There were many that had said that she would have made a better commander than her brother, but none were brave enough to say so to her face as they knew they would leave with clawed ears. She had planted herself in front of Cadet Elyria to block her path now that she was certain where she was going, but she had actually been following her for quite some time. "No cadets are allowed in this area. The commander made that very clear after the battle." Both Foxstar and Limavady were highly manipulative. Cadets would stand no chance against the two fox hearted felines. Of course she never would have made it past the guards stationed on prisoner island, but the fact that she had come this far was bad enough. A punishment was in order and she would see to it that she got it.

Cadet Elyria had to backpedal to avoid running into Diana, and once she got her footing again her heart dropped. She was sure she would be able to make the guards at the Prison see why she should be allowed to go in, but there was no chance against Diana. Knowing a lie wouldn't be to her benefit, she carefully sat the bundle of delicate herbs down and looked into the she-cat's eyes. Her gaze was unwavering and calm, no fire or anger at being caught to be found in their deep emerald depths.
"I made an oath to the Blind Protector to heal any who needed it. Much like I don't get to pick and choose which aspects of our creed to follow, I cannot pick and choose when I fulfill my oath and when I do not. A promise made to the Blind Protector supersedes obedience to Commander Mars in this instance. There are two injured cats in the Prison that deserve the same treatment and care as any of us. I cannot condone torture, and letting their wounds fester and rot is tantamount to it. I respect what you and your brother do for this group as much as any soldier, but you must step aside and let me pass. If not me, send the Chaman, or Guider Superior." She exhaled slowly, wishing the pounding pulse in her head would slow down. "We cannot allow them to live in pain and misery until a decision as to what to do to them has been reached. Please."
She knew she was just as likely to get thrown into the Prison with them after what amounted to a treasonous speech to the Commander's own sister, but the cadet was still young and had a blind, naive faith in humanity. This faith would spell trouble for her as she grew up, with this being one of the first major instances.
Diana was silent for a moment as she tried to process everything that the cadet had just said. Her silence was not a good thing though. That was evident by the growing fury in her expression. In the next moment she had cuffed the cadet's ears. Her voice grew sharp, holding just as much authority as before. The only difference was now anger could be heard as well. "Have you completely lost your mind? Commander Mars is the one the Blind Protector set as our leader. His word is law and disobeying him is treasonous! You have no idea what Foxstar and Limavady have done in their lives! Foxstar alone is responsible for the deaths of more cats than I care to count and Limavady just attacked our commander! I'm pretty sure that is against our code, the code that the blind protector wanted us to follow by the way. You have no right to decide what is or is not done with the prisoners on prisoner island, especially so soon after the attack. I would suggest you turn yourself around this instant and go help your groupmates tend to their wounds. Consider yourself lucky I am not presenting you as a traitor to the Regime."
Honestly it had been a while since she had been forced to give a lecture like this, but she also hadn't been this angry in quite a while. While everyone else was trying to recover from the attack, this mouse brained cadet was trying to sneak off to help the enemy and demanding that if she couldn't do it, that someone else be sent to do so in her stead. She doubted her brother would allow them to suffer for long. He was too soft hearted for that, but she wasn't going to mention this to Elyria. The last thing Mars needed was some bleeding heart cadet giving him a sob story over why she should be allowed to heal the prisoners. "There will be repercussions for this cadet. I will see to that personally."

Cadet Elyria winced and stifled a cry when Diana cuffed her. Having decided to become a guider early, she was never subjected to mercenary or scout training and was completely unfamiliar with pain or attacks. Her cheeks burned as Diana lectured her, calling her everything from treasonous to stupid, and kept her mouth shut until Diana stopped to take a breath. It just wasn't right. No, she didn't know what either cat had done in their lifetime to deserve their suffering, but that was beside the point! Elyria didn't think anyone deserved suffering, yet they were confined on Prisoner Island, wounded and alone.
She raised her gaze when Diana promised personal retribution and held it unwaveringly. She would take this punishment, whatever it was, but it would not convince her that what she had done was wrong. Those in pain deserve succor, those injured deserve healing. The Blind Protector wouldn't want any cat to suffer, she just knew it. Still, she was a cadet and Diana was a hero in their ranks. She had to bow to the other she-cat's command. Pride wasn't normally an issue for Elyria, but even just pretending to accept that helping others was wrong was difficult to her.
"Yes Diana. I understand." Her voice was soft and caught slightly as she fought to keep the tears in her eyes from falling or the anger in her heart from showing.
While most would relent after saying what they had to say, Diana's expression didn't change. She knew for a fact that Foxstar and Limavady were both capable of manipulating such a soft hearted cadet. She would have to be sure that she didn't try to sneak back later. For now, she turned to lead her back away from prisoner island. "They are prisoners for a reason. One is a traitor and the other led her clan in an attempt to harm us. Leave matters concerning the prisoners to your superior. I am sure Commander Mars will deal with them fairly." It probably wouldn't comfort the cadet much, but it was all she was going to give in the way of reassurance.

"Yes Diana." Cadet Elyria repeated the phrase, hoping that it would speed along Diana's chastisement and let her find a way to slip into Prisoner Island anyway. She just could stomach the idea that there were cats suffering down there and there was nothing she could do about it. She slowly raised her head, the pain subsiding, and met Diana's eyes. "I understand. I'm sorry for getting in your way and bothering you." But I'm still going, she silently finished in her head, resolve growing.
Diana's harsh gaze met hers again but this time there was less anger. "It's not that you bothered me. It is that you disobeyed a direct order from the commander himself stating that no cadets were to go near prisoner island. If you think Commander Mars will allow wounded cats to die on the island you are even more foolish than I originally thought. Their wounds are receiving appropriate care to keep them alive. The commander isn't heartless. Even if you were to make it to them, you would be drug back and presented to Superior Meepo and Chaman Roon to be punished. We are at war. There is no room for insubordination at the moment." Honestly, what was she thinking? Was she so conceited that she thought herself a better healer than the guiders assigned to care for the prisoners or was she just a soft hearted fool? Either way she was just the sort of person that Limvady and Foxstar would manipulate into doing their bidding.
