Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Mars was honestly still recovering from the strange illness that had claimed his first life. It had happened so quickly after the SunClan attack, some were convinced that SunClan had something to do with it, but he didn't have definite proof that they were responsible so he was unable to act on that just yet. Of course the war with SunClan had yet to end and it wouldn't until the Regime had put SunClan in their place. Of course since he was still recovering, he tended to have at least one of his sentinels with him at all times. It seemed to be a bit much in his opinion, but it seemed to put the rest of the Regime at ease so he would endure it without complaint. Today he had Sean with him. He honestly hadn't gotten to know the former commander as much as he would like so perhaps now would be the chance to do so. "How are your wounds from the battle recovering?" Honestly he wanted to ask about Shule as well, but he sort of figured that might not be a good idea at the moment.
After a moment he had to sit down to rest. His stamina had still not fully recovered from his illness. He was just trying to put on a strong face for the Regime since he knew everyone was going to be on edge after the attack and subsequent loss of his first life. "Once I've caught my breath I may step out of the tunnels for a bit of fresh air." He knew Apollo might scold him later but he was willing to risk it. He honestly needed a change of scenery.
"Uh," Sean looked at his injured front leg, "Ugly looking. It's all scabby and there's flakes of skin in my fur. Also my skin was already getting pretty dry lately so from all the scratches and scuffles my fur is like a raggedy raccoons. I just feel ugly. People in the Regime are too polite to say it, but I see it written on their faces, how the might has fallen. How can he go back to his wife looking like that?"
"I can't read lips, but I can read judgment, special talent of mine," Sean explained, "Honestly, it's just wild that I had to fight SunClan underground for the second time. Anyways what was it like losing your first life? Did you get lectured by the Blind Protector too?"
Sean's words actually drew a laugh out of Mars. "You look fine!" His next question brought him to silence though as his green gaze grew slightly troubled. His time as commander hadn't been easy. It had been filled with danger and war with two separate clans now. The blind protector had warned him during his lives ceremony that he was taking command in a very troubled time for the Regime, but he was just now realizing what he had meant. "I wouldn't say he lectured me...He gave me the same warning he did during my lives ceremony..." He hadn't told many of this, but Sean had been a commander once so he trusted that he would know that Mars hadn't shared this information with the rest of the Regime for a reason.
Sean gave him a pitied look before withdrawing a breath and smiling, "Don't let BP freak you out. Our ancestors were cowards and so was he. It's not one of my back handed insults, it's the truth, Mars. The Blind Protector was once a the leader of Renegade Regime, him and his sister. Half of their people wanted to help cats who were hurt in a two-leg war, the other half wanted to be safe. So instead of helping those in need and rallying his troops to be brave. He hid deep underground. The Blind Protector is a blind protector. He will always see more than us, but he will always be blind to the fear that has infested inside him his entire life and afterlife."
Commander Mars was the very first commander he hadn't referred to as Commander. Typically, a commander to him was always called commander with no name following, but Mars was family, more than a commander, someone he'd watched grow up. He placed a paw over Mars and looked him gently in the eyes, "Mars, I've seen that look in every commanders eyes. Whatever the Blind Protector said, whatever is to come, never be afraid to fail, be afraid of not trying. This will always be your burden, to be brave. Nothing and nobody can take that courage away from you. Not even Foxstar because that's who you are."
Sean looked a bit teary eyed as he dabbed his paw lightly to his eye. He had filled him with all the words he wished someone had told him when he was commander. He hoped he was a friend to Mars, the kind he never had.
"How many commanders can honestly say that the Regime has been invaded as many times as it has under my command. SunClan and BrookClan have attacked us and clan cats are coming and going as they please." How far had they really fallen? He knew that his own reluctance to set his foot down was part of the problem. If clans thought they could get away with invading them, they would. Capturing Foxstar had been the first step to showing the clan that the Regime was not to be toyed with. He hated the thought of bringing his soldiers into a war, but SunClan had left them with no choice at this point.
He didn't want to air his worries fully to Sean at the moment though. He was sure that he had his own problems to worry about so after a moment he smiled again. It was the same cheerful charismatic smile that had gotten him through most of his life up to this point. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't air my worries here. We should be focusing on recovering so that we can prepare a counter attack." He knew that SunClan's move demanded retaliation. He would worry about himself at a later point.
"How are your young ones adjusting to the Regime by the way? I haven't had much of a chance to check in on them honestly."
"Sorry, but I'm crowned King Commander of allowing outsiders onto our super sacred land. Remember Toxic Regime where we teamed up with Toxicity and that smoldering, handsome, juicy tom, Chief Kutsu. Mmm. Or that tall gorgeous hunk of hotness that was Deal. Yeah... We had a lot of outsiders on our land," Sean said chewing his claws passionately in thought before horrifyingly releasing his claw for chewing it up a bit. He cleared his throat, "My point, Commander Mars, is that we were attacked, but never lost. SunClan, DayClan, SpringClan, WinterClan, they can't say the same. Heck, BrookClan can't say the same. The secret that all commanders eventually learn is that you have no more control than anyone else in the Regime has. The only person you can control is yourself and all you gain as a commander is a title and if you're lucky, respect. But respect starts here Mars. Respect yourself and your achievements, if you don't then why shouldn't anyone else respect you?"
He was all too happy to continue talking about leadership and not about his kits so he left it at that. In truth Serenity didn't seem to connect with him, none of them did, but they seemed happy so that was what mattered most. But he was worried for his son still in SunClan. Glowstar said that a SunClan patrol was questioning her loyalty. What if they felt Dusky couldn't be trusted because of his bloodline to the Regime and would kill him? It definitely wasn't beneath them. However talking to Mars it felt like a distant nightmare, his best way of getting over things was forgetting them and any conversation further from the kits made him worry less. Pebble called this avoidance or something, but he called it not my problem.
"You honestly thought Deal was hot?" Mars's eyes had widened. That tidbit had distracted him for a moment. He had honestly found the tom to be a bit creepy and had avoided him whenever possible. It didn't distract him for long though as his thoughts always went back to his troubles no matter how far he tried to run from them. It was true that he had achieved a lot during his lifetime. Even learning to walk had been a challenge for him, but he had been determined that he was going to be a mercenary like his father...He had never imagined that determination would have gotten him this far. Sometimes he found himself wandering how he had ended up as commander instead of Diana. She was much better at things like this after all.
For once he hadn't been able to play off his troubles. Normally all he had to do was smile and direct their attention elsewhere and the conversation would shift away from more uncomfortable topics. This time it didn't seem to be working. He was still reluctant to let his true thoughts be heard though. So far Momi had been his only council in matters of this nature as he wanted the Regime to see him as a strong and fearless commander, the commander they needed to have. Of course he was far from the perfect image he tried to portray, but he liked to think he was doing a pretty good job at acting at least.
(Oh my God, I'm so mad! I replied to this days ago and put so much effort into this and it never sent XD)
"Deal was my sentinel," Sean said, the words taking him back to not a greater time, but one with rich memories, "He was always at my side. He was there defending little Miracle when the league came to take her away. He got right in Roxanne E'tani's face and sassed her, you should have seen her! And when Abiliana and I broke up and I had to raise our litter by myself he was there to support me through the hard times. He's my best friend in the whole world. He was the only one that understood what it's like to stand in front of a crowd that knows as good as you do that you don't belong there as leader."
Sean got up and motioned his tail for Commander Mars to follow. He had said he wanted to go outside of a while so they might as well, "If there is one thing I'm proud of, I'm glad I had fun being commander. I found Avalon Everlasting, was able to keep them at rest and I still carry their sacred scarf underneath my nest to this day just in case they come back. I had wild parties all the time, I made an alliance with Toxicity! No one else can say they've done that. And although we had to move for a while at least I didn't have to lead during the time when the Regime got truly bad and we were forced to move here. I raised a duck too and my scout superior spoke a language and I still have no idea what she said to this day. I get how intimidating it is to lead people you care about into uncertain destiny or demise, but don't let this time in your life pass you up."
He gave a loving lick atop Commander Mars head. He thought about adding that it's not bad to angst about things either, sometimes he needed to dedicate a day to being sad so he could flush out the negativity in his head and be happy the rest of the week. But if Commander Mars had ever even noticed him in passing, he'd already know he's done that all the time. But realized there was one thing he hadn't mentioned yet, "I'm proud of you Mars."
