Duskwing's pelt bushed out as she darted around camp eyes wide and ears flattened against her head. She'd been planning to sleep through the day only to look and discover her kits were gone!
Panic seizing her heart, her breaths coming out in quick gasps as she moved quickly around camp searching desperately for any trace. She was on the verge of hysterics. She'd already lost Mouseheart, the last remnant of her brother whom she'd lost ages ago. She couldn't lose her precious children even if their father had been a useless piece of fox dung.
"Where are they?" She shrieked pelt puffing out trying to quell her panic and failing.
Stonehill had been dozing off in a corner of camp when he heard Duskwing shriek. He leaped quickly to his paws quickly scanning the camp to make sure they weren't under attack before trotting up to the she-cat and quickly realizing that her kits were missing. "They couldn't have gone far!" he said, attempting to comfort Duskwing. "I'll go see if I can track their scent, I'm sure I'll catch up with them quickly." he said.
Duskwing shuddered shaking with the fear of having possibly lost her babies. Her pelt was puffed out and eyes were wide with panic.
She hated how terrified she was, hated that Stonehill was seeing her in such a mess but she nodded. "Please," She said ears lowering. "I've looked all over camp and I can't find a trace of them," She meowed.
"Would you like to come with me?" he offered. "They might even be hiding out there and they might not come out unless they see or hear you, especially if they're scared." Stonehill added. He turned to the nearest apprentice and tasked them with waiting at the camp to make sure the kits didn't return on their own.
Duskwing nodded. "Of course, of course that's right." She said quickly, trying to quell the shaking in her legs. "We need to leave at once, and you'd better not let them slip past." She added in a snap at the apprentice, Flickerpaw, who flinched at the harsh tone of voice the apprentice nodding his head vigorously.
After she was certain the apprentice wouldn't fail the task set in front of him she turned towards the camp entrance. "Come on, they couldn't have gone far." She said anxiously heading out of camp, almost pressing her face into the ground to try and catch the faintest trace of her kittens.
Stonehill nodded and quickly padded out of camp. His gaze scanned his immediate surroundings first, hoping they'd be just hiding under some undergrowth, but he quickly realized they weren't and he immediately started trying to pick up their scent.
"I think I have something!" he called to Duskwing after a few moments. Their scent was faint but it was leading off into the deepest part of NightClan's territory.
Duskwing had been sniffing around some brambles seeing if her kits had decided to go hide in them when her ears pricked up, she went over to Stonehill. "You found something?!" She asked sounding hopeful wondering if she dare hope it was true.
But upon bending her head to sniff, her eyes lit up. "Yes! They came this way, you're wonderful Stonehill! Come on! We have to find them!" She said immediately taking off after the kits trail.
Stonehill breathed a sigh of relief when Duskwing confirmed the scent belonged to her kits. The large black and white tom bolted after her, keeping his head low to the ground in hopes of picking up more scents or signs of the kits in the undergrowth.
They came to a stop when the scent trail ended and went no further. "Oh no, where have they gone?" Duskwing asked looking around wildly. Not looking up and seeing the tiny tails waving in the air as little paws shifted on a branch above.
A low growl drew Duskwing's attention and her eyes stretched wide as she saw a fox crouched before them. But rather than draw back or screech in fright the queen saw red.
Letting out an angry shriek Duskwing flung herself at the fox claws unsheathed she swatted it on the muzzle. "How dare you! Did you eat my kits you awful abomination?! I will tear you limb from limb, I will carve out your heart!"
The fox snapped at her taking the tip of her ear which dripped with blood but rather than make Duskwing cower the she cat roared and leapt onto the thing lashing out at it with all four paws.
"You vile thing!" Duskwing screeched. "They were my kits!" She wailed before grunting as the fox managed to throw her off Duskwing staggering to her paws beside Stonehill fur bushing out, fury in her eyes.
Stonehill stared in shock for several moments when the fox appeared and then when Duskwing attacked it. Truthfully, hearing the she-cat threaten to tear a fox apart limb by limb gave him a newfound respect for her. Within moments he shook off the shock and leaped into battle beside Duskwing. He landed several blows to the face and muzzle of the fox before managing to leap onto it's back and bite down hard on it's ear, biting through it completely, while raking his claws down its back.
Duskwing recovering from being thrown off went at the fox, snarling. Technique and planning out the window. With Stonehill on it's back she slashed at the side of the fox's muzzle tearing into the things cheek. then she followed it up with another swipe and another. The fox barked and tried to lash out, Duskwing darting back the beasts teeth snapping shut millimeters from her muzzle.
She would've felt relief if she wasn't immediately rushing in and burying her teeth into the awful beasts throat while Stonehill held it down. Red liquid flowing out from the bite, the fox yipping and crying out, lashing out with a paw and knocking Duskwing off once more winding her.
The russet creature tried to launch at her but was hampered by Stonehill. Blood still flowing from it's wound it twisted to try and snap at him.
Stonehill leaped off of the fox's back. He faced it snarling and lashed out again at its face, feeling his paw connect hard with the creature's muzzle and then he felt the warmth of the blood where his claws raked along its face. He hoped the fox was deterred enough to where it would just run off now, they had caused some serious injuries to it. Stonehill gazed up quickly, his gaze landing on a few little tails in the tree's above. He felt relieved that the kits appeared to be safe, but at the moment decided not to say anything so he didn't alert the fox to the kits whereabouts, if they went up the tree to get them now, the fox would likely hang around waiting for them to come down.
The fox growled tail lashing glaring at Duskwing and then at Stonehill, edging back before it turned tail and darted off.
"Yeah you better run you mangy crowfood eater!" Duskwing yowled after it, fur on end as she shrieked after it. "IF you did eat my babies, I'm coming for you! I'm going to take your pelt and use it to line my nest don't think I won't. So you better hope my babies are okay or else!"
Once the fox was out of sight Duskwing was panting hard. The she cat sat down heavily, all the anger leaving her drained and worried. "StarClan... I hope that beast didn't eat them." She murmured. "But where could they be? Why does their scent trail end here?"
Stonehill stared after the fox for several moments while it ran away and Duskwing howled threats to it. He turned his gaze upwards again, thankful that he could still see the tails of the kits. "Look up!" He said to Duskwing.
Duskwing turned back to him blinking before looking up and gasping. "Oh you naughty naughty naughty kittens!" She cried. "Beetlekit! Remnantkit! Briarkit! Spiderkit! Get down from there this instant!" She cried getting up on her hind legs pressing her forepaws on the tree as she looked up at her children.
Duskwing shivered with relief as she heard their squeaks and mews, Beetlekit the first one to peek down from the branch he was on.
Then the little black kitten shifted to try and scale down the tree.
"Stonehill be ready in case one of them slip," Duskwing meowed.
Stonehill shook his head. "I'll carry each of them down, getting up a tree is one thing, getting down is a lot trickier, especially for a kit!" Stonehill meowed, scaling up the tree with easy. He reached Beetlekit within seconds and gently grabbed the kit's scruff and began climbing back down the tree, placing him safely on the ground near Duskwing and heading back up for the next kit.
Beetlekit squeaked his claws digging in before he relented and allowed Stonehill to carry him down.
Once the black kitten was on the ground Duskwing fell upon her son and covered him in licks, the little tom cat squeaking in protest.
"You naughty kitten! Do you know how worried I've been? And that fox! You were so close to being eaten by that fox!" She cried between licks, Beetlekit mewling in protest but relenting as his mother shushed him every time.
Stonehill breathed a sign of relief once he'd deposited the last of the four kits onto the ground, his gaze scanned the undergrowth quickly, hoping the fox didn't decide to come back. "I'll carry two and you carry the other two back to camp?" Stonehill offered. "We'd get back to camp quicker if we carried them, plus I don't trust that the fox won't come back..." Stonehill said, once again staring at the spot where the fox had disappeared.
Duskwing nodded bending down to scoop up Beetlekit, placing him on her back before grabbing Remnantkit. "Then let's go, I've got these two you take the others." Duskwing shared Stonehill's concern, and she wanted to get her kits to a safe space so she could chew them out properly.
But even that desire to ream her children for giving her a heart attack, was overwhelmed by the sheer relief of them being all right.
Stonehill nodded and looked at Spiderkit and Briarkit. "Who want's a badger ride back to camp?" he asked the kits in a playful tone, dropping into a hunter's crouch to allow them to climb up onto his back for the walk back to camp.
