Sundapple settled down outside the apprentices' den at dawn to wait for Birchpaw. She had been so excited to have an apprentice, but now found herself fighting down an awful nervousness. She went over the plans she had in her head for the day to occupy her mind and ward off the anxiety.

He padded up to Sundapple with a warm gleam in his amber eyes. The young tom was quivering with excitement from head to toe. "Good morning, Sundapple." He purred his greeting.

Birchpaw followed his mentor, a cheery smile on his maw. His eyes widened as they walked through the camp entrance and the green growth entered his sight. "Wow, it's so big out here!"
She purred. "It is, just keep in mind that it's a bit more dangerous too. A warrior learns to fight to defend against foxes and badgers as much if not more so than the other Clans." Sundapple reminded him.

Relief washed over him like the sunshine that poured through the trees. "Oh, that's good." He responded sheepishly. "I don't want to fight my friends from the gathering."
Sundapple blinked at him sympathetically. "It's good that you can enjoy the company of cats from different Clans. That means that you can appreciate differences, just as much as similarities. That's a rare gift. Be careful that your friendship does not interfere with your loyalty to your Clan though. Remember, the leader of a Clan's word is the warrior code, so if their leader orders them into battle against us, they'll have no choice but to obey."

Birchpaw listened to Sundapple's wise words carefully then nodded. "I think I understand. You know, Cabbagepaw always teased me and told me I was too soft." He remarked. A pain pierced his chest for a moment as he remembered the spunky apprentice that had recently passed during the sickness. "Do you think she was right?" His question came out shyly. Sundapple had told him that his ability to see differences was a rare gift. That was good right?
