Sydney, though the same age as her apprentice, was so much more at the same time. She was an ancient leader, on a mission only few truly understood. Lusterpaw was hers to train, and having him on as her apprentice was just about the best way to do that, despite the awkwardness of having to listen to your sister, who just so happened to be an ancient leader from some time long past. Hopefully he'd understand. If not, she didn't really expect Foxstar of all cats to really enforce her authority over them. Not with what was at stake.
It was strange to have his sister as a mentor, and a little embarrassing. Lusterpaw didn't want to admit that, he was supposed be tough and strong, and being embarrassed seemed so... childish. But everyone else got a proper mentor, what would it look like when he showed up at the gathering meekly trotting after his slightly-taller young-as-him sister? Would the other apprentices respect him at all? Sighing, the ebony tom gathered himself before he approached his sister and offered a half-hearted efforted smile. "Hey, Sydney."

She understood his hesitance. If it wasn't of the utmost importance for her to be close to him as a warrior, she wouldn't have asked to be his mentor. All the same, he did get something others didn't. A cat, though his sister, so much more ancient than even the oldest cats in the clan. A leader, like Foxstar, but not of any SunClan he'd recognize. Was it much of a consolation? Probably not. Maybe one day.
Despite being the same age, they couldn't really look more different. Even at the age of an apprentice, she stood taller than him, with long limbs and angular features that indicated no real relation to each other at all. "Morning, Lusterpaw." Senator and Apprentice. Siblings, but they could look at each other from a bigger divide.
He wasn't sure if the formality made it better or worse. This way, he could try and pretend he didn't know her, that they weren't related - but he knew they were. Would it be better if she was cuffing him over the ears and laughing like he'd seen other families do? Maybe not... but it was just strange, having her be his sister and not, at the same time.
"What are we doing today? Gathering moss? Killing ticks? I've been looking forward to this my entire life," he replied, settling on dry sarcasm and arching a brow at his sister, just daring her to make him do just that.
Sydney flashed a slight smile, and this time, she did actually cuff him over the ear. "If you'd rather that than an adventure, be my guest." She answered, "I'll just have to have all the fun alone."
Lusterpaw huffed, sitting up indignantly and flicking his ears back. There was a brief pause as he tried to think of something clever to say; then he just scowled and swallowed his dignity. "Fine," he muttered, "I'll go with you."

She knew this was just his normal, grumpy, self but still Sydney wondered how she got paired with him of all cats. Perhaps the Sun God just wanted a good laugh... putting the diplomat with a cat who wanted to be anything but cooperative. Not that she could change what had already been decided. She could only work with it as best she could. "Alright! Let's go."

"If that's what you'd prefer." She returned, flashing a slight smile that indicated she wasn't serious. "No, we're going to go roaming. There's nothing better than firsthand experience, so why don't we get some?" In many ways, the newly named Senator was extraordinarily out of place. During her time, the twolegs hadn't taken over the land, there was freedom and nature as far as the eye could see. Things had changed so much since then, and she was left to figure it out on her own. Her lifetime of experience helped, but even so, she had to rely on others to understand the different way the world worked.
His ear twitched. "How far are we going? Outside the borders?" That interested him more than a border patrol would, and his ears pricked as he looked up at her. He had never seen their lands but the idea of beyond was fascinating and wild -- who could say what it was like when you went far enough? Did the grass grow tall as trees or weave together into massive nets? Was the river meek and mellow or did it widen and sweep away ever cat that neared its banks?

"Of course. We can focus on SunClan itself later. It's not like it's going anywhere. The real challenge will be when you're far from home, whether on your own or with others. It's where you'll naturally have the least experience." That went for her as well. She didn't know how the other territories had changed, how twolegplace was like, and what the other cats believed. SunClan was a known thing, everywhere else, not so much.
