Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. Her life was never easy. Others claimed it was her own fault that she never found peace or comfort in the day to day, but she knew that not to be true. All she wanted was to find love. Was that such a bad thing? Her heart ached at the very thought of it and she sighed, turning her head down. Every tom she encountered wound up running away. She didn't know why. Maybe she was unlovable. She couldn't understand it. But rather than dwell on what could be and what had already transpired, she vowed to herself that she was going to give her kadet – Spicepaw, his name was – everything that she hadn't been able to afford when she was his age. Nodding determinedly, she stood from her place by the haunted brook and made her way quickly back to camp, the sun rising just over the crest of the mountains.
She poked her head into the den. "Spicepaw?" She wondered, blinking in the darkness. Had he already gotten up?
Spicepaw's eyes opened as he heard his name. It wasn't a surprise to anyone who knew him that he'd overslept. This was particularly true as of late; Spicepaw had found himself in a little bit of a... well... breakdown, to put it nicely. His siblings were gone, at least most of them. As much as he tried to stay ambivalent presenting, it left the tom deeply troubled.
"Yea, boss?" he meowed, trying not to sound groggy. "I'm comin, I'm comin."
Halsey smiled and chuckled lightly, taking a few steps back so he could slip by her without squeezing through. "Wipe the sleep from your eyes, little one, it's time for an adventure." Her eyes sparkled. "I know you're expecting today to be boring – trust me, I was too – but I think I've got a real treat in store for us if you can just bear with me for the first part. You're going to need a tour of the territory so you don't get lost on your missions and in your hunting. You'll become more familiar with time and getting out there to explore, but this'll be a good overview and a start of your training." She tilted her head.
An adventure? His eyes lit up. His whole life had been searching for adventure. He remembered with fondness the night he convinced Sweetkit to explore the territory with him. The duo couldn't have been more than four moons old, traversing the territory. He didn't say this, though. He didn't tell her that he'd already found himself familiar with the territory. Older cats tended to frown upon that. "I'm ready for an adventure," he agreed in a chirp, blinking a few times to get the residual sleep out of his eyes. "Adventure is good."
She chuckled at his sleepy expression and the way he seemed to force his words out around threatening yawns. Nodding her head in satisfaction, she turned and walked away. “We’ll grab something to eat while we’re out there; we don’t wanna burn daylight and it can be fun to eat out there with the rest of the world and the flowers.” She smiled fondly. “How does that sound?”
The tom's ears perked at the idea of eating somewhere outside of the camp. It could be so drab eating in the same sun spot every day of his life; he was relieved that he woudln't have to today. "That sounds great!" he chirped, the excitement starting to outweigh the tiredness. "Have you ever had a kadet before?" he asked as they walked, the small tom's tail flicking, "Or am I the first one?"
Halsey froze, startled by the question and just a little uncomfortable about it. She knew her answer before she voiced it, though. Open communication is key. “Um, no, I haven’t.” She smiled at him. “You’re my first. Which is why I hope we can have some fun. Maybe we’ll both learn something from each other.”
Spicepaw's eyes got a spark in them, which was generally never good. He was a trouble maker, after all, and now that he knew that he was her first? It would be hard for him not to try to push every button that she had. He would do it with his charming little smile, though, the one that made it so few could actually get mad at him.
"I'm sure we will!" he purred in excitement. "You're awful lucky you got me as your test run," he then meowed with a wink.
She blinked at him in surprise before turning to face forward and continuing on their way. That was bizarre, but she shrugged it off on any new kadet's usual arrogance. Even she had it when she was a trainee, though she could hardly remember those days. She continued their tour, pointing out landmark after landmark, before arriving at the haunted brook. "And this here is the haunted brook." She smiled at the water she could hear burble. "Do you know why?"
He tipped his head, looking at the water. This had been where he had taken Sweetkit when they escaped the camp. Well, not taken him, per say. The duo had just ended up wandering and ended up there. The memory hurt him a little; after all, that was one of the last times he would see his brother. Still, he couldn't let Halsey know that he was upset. He smiled widely, before blinking. "It's because you can hear voices if you listen closely, right?"
