Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Nothing was right. Nothing had ever really been right, ever since the day she was born. She just got alternatingly better and worse at pretending things were okay. She had tried for moons and seasons to tell herself she was where she was supposed to be. The fear of error was only right, especially for a cat who had previously been a traitor, and the harsh rules and customs were only necessary to protect the Clan. The cloud that seemed to hang over every cat was just an illusion, and anyone who dared to protest against what the upper ranks did simply didn't understand what was necessary to keep SunClan safe. As time passed, though, especially since SunClan captured DayClan however long ago that was, it was getting harder and harder to believe the claims she told herself on repeat. It was one cat in particular's fault. She wasn't entirely sure whether to be bitter or grateful to her. She did know one thing, though.
She had to talk to her. The cat who's words wouldn't get out of her head. The only cat she could even begin to trust anymore. And the only cat who stood even a chance of being able to help her. Glowstar. If she weren't already skilled at burying her emotions she would've been far too conspicuous, with fur fluffed out and tail twitching constantly, eyes wide and ears unable to stay still. As it was, the only sign of the nerves running rampant under the surface was her inability to sit, the scrawny she-cat pacing back and forth along the border line with orange eyes scanning the land across the line for any signs of life. Eventually she stopped, wondering what the odds were of her stumbling across Glowstar of all cats along this border. She couldn't just wait here forever. Every passing heartbeat increased the odds she would be caught by a Clanmate, and if that were to happen she dreaded to think of what they would think. One of the Janus, pacing along DayClan's border like she was looking for someone. Maybe she could lie her way around any suspicion, claim she was on 'Janus business', but if Foxstar found out...
The last thought spurred her back into motion. Onto DayClan territory. She was a trained Janus, one of the most skilled of her Clan. She could defend herself if she came across anyone hostile, and anyone who wasn't could simply be told it was SunClan business she had come with. Glowstar was still technically a member of SunClan after all. The thoughts only comforted her so much, and though she tried to put on an air of confidence she kept her eyes and ears sharp out for more than just the cat she was looking for. She could only hope she found her before she was found herself, and hopefully it would be soon. Every pawstep felt like a step closer to death, and if she wasn't careful they certainly would be. Foxstar had promised she'd never excuse another break of the code after all.
Glowstar sashayed through the cattails, heathers, and wild flowers bending inward as though they thrived on her energy. She paused staring up at the hill where white tree sat and SunClan's border lied behind it like a shadow. There was a figure on the hill and for a moment she was about to keep walking, but thought better about it. Glowstar made her way up to White Tree, a storm of white petals sailed through the air cascading in various patterns. When the petals flew away from the tree her eyes glimmered like emeralds staring at Twistedecho. Every time she saw her she forgot how grown up she had become. A slow smile parted across her lips like sunlight filtering through clouds she took a few fast steps forward and then paused, closer to Twistedecho, but not enough to embrace her like she wanted to.
Twistedecho wasn't her kit, she gave that up when she broke the surveillance team. She had recognized how much it would and was going to hurt the team, but it was already too late for Twistedecho when she disbanded it. Still looking at her she could still see the wide eyed, chubby cheek kit that had wandered through the tunnels so many years ago. She loved Twistedecho even if she could never love her in return. Not when she was imprisoned as an initiate, not when she and her clan was captured and not now...
"What are you doing just hanging around the border? We're an alliance y'know, you can just come onto our territory," Glowstar purred, her tail waved Twistedecho encouragingly over to her.
She had paused just under the White Tree, glancing first back behind her for signs of Clanmates and then in front of her for anything in DayClan, when she caught a flicker of familiar fur. Her eyes flashed with relief for just a moment before, just as she had learned to do, she buried it under a mask of neutrality. She didn't move a muscle, as though she were a mere statue on the hill, as Glowstar approached. All the thoughts that had been swarming through her head, of what she was here to talk about and what would happen if anyone knew about it, seemed to disappear as she met the older she-cat's gaze. Almost automatically she scanned Glowstar's face, searching for the scratches she left her the last time they talked as though they would still be visible. Would she even want to talk to her, after how their last conversation went? The smile that spread across her face reassured Twistedecho some, but she couldn't help but worry deep down.
Her ears turned back against her head when Glowstar spoke. She followed the gesture, forcing herself not to send another look back behind her as she did so, but as she padded up to DayClan's leader she couldn't help but reply, "I have a feeling at least some of your Clanmates would be less than pleased with me on their territory." She certainly wouldn't treat kindly a cat like her if she was in any of the former initiates' position. Or maybe that was her own self-hatred for what she had become tainting her opinion. Few of them probably knew much about her actual role in SunClan, an intentional mystery. How many knew that, if Foxstar deemed it necessary, she could be the cat to hunt for their lives for leaving SunClan?
She gave a sharp shake of her head that rippled down to the end of her tail to brush away the thoughts. Glancing back away from Glowstar - her gaze eventually settled onto the White Tree, the Janus unwilling to let any signs of the desperation she felt to be seen - she said, "I need help, and you..." She let out a harsh, scoffing laugh, turning her head halfway back towards the other she-cat to watch her from the corner of her eye. "You're the only cat I know that I can even begin to trust." Her voice had dropped to only just above a whisper, teeth bared in a silent snarl, with her words barely loud enough to be heard. It was in part a precaution, to make sure no one but Glowstar would hear, but it was also because she hated to admit it. Why should she ever trust Glowstar? She abandoned her. Left her at the mercy of Vera E'tani and Foxstar the blood-hungry monsters. She was justified in hating her, and yet she couldn't bring herself to do so. She simultaneously hated it and was relieved by it. Maybe it meant she wasn't entirely gone; that there was still a part of her that was Twistedecho, not just a Janus of SunClan.
There could never be enough words to describe how it felt to feel so impossibly happy to see someone's face and yet so tragically reminded that they weren't them. She could seem the remnants of Twistedkit lit in Twistedecho's eyes and her voice was just how she imagined her to grow up to speak, with authority and pride. Perhaps the most amazing part about watching someone tear their soul apart was how much you could care for someone in just a years time. The things you'd never imagine you'd miss, but Glowstar could list every one of them. She missed her bubbly smile, she missed the spark in her eyes when she would say something meaningful and how expressive she was when she talked about something passionate. Maybe that was just growing up, losing that giddy sense of wonder, but Twistedecho would never know how much she'd give just to see her smile, really smile because she was happy.
This time something caught her off guard, there was something different about her today. She had never called her Glowstar, not after what had happened in the surveillance team. It was always Green or Strikhedoniadalisay. With everything that had happened between her and Foxstar she wasn't sure, maybe Twistedecho was a trap, but... There were people worth falling for, even if it was off a cliff and to her doom, she'd take this moment even if it were fake, even if it were real, any moment was real enough so long as Twistedecho was herself.
Glowstar motioned for Twistedecho to follow her to Hidden Pond, typically she left the place alone for her cats to gossip and not be hovered over by a leader at all times, but this was serious enough to break that rule. She thought about commenting that SunClan cats were allowed, that it wasn't their fault that they were raised and herded like sheep, but she didn't want to lose Twistedecho so she kept her mouth shut on the topic.
"I'm glad you came. I'll help you, whatever it is... I owe it to you," Glowstar said, a deep sorrow spread across her eyes as she lead Twistedecho through the ivy and into the Hidden Pond.
She felt like she couldn't breath as she waited for a response, her gaze only staying on Glowstar to watch for her reaction. Would she even accept? Had she misjudged her, believing all she had done to drive her away would be forgotten? It was only through moons of practice that she didn't breath a sigh of relief at the gesture to follow. It certainly made it easier when, for a brief, terrified moment, she wondered if the other she-cat planned to lead her into a trap herself. It seemed a perfect opportunity and she couldn't say she'd entirely blame her for it. But the thought only lasted a moment before she reasoned it away. Glowstar was far too open and... naive wasn't the right word... willfully ignorant, she supposed, of the flaws of others. No matter what she might say or do to her, Twistedecho doubted Glowstar would try to deceive her. And so she followed, forcing her posture to remain confident no matter how small she wanted to be. No matter how much she simply wanted to disappear and cease to be. It would all be so much easier that way.
She stayed back as she followed the older she-cat, close enough to reach out and touch her is she wanted but not in line with Glowstar. Close enough to where anyone who saw her would see Glowstar as well, but far enough behind that it was easy to avoid her gaze. She needed time to think, time to plan what she would say. Would she even agree to help, even if it might risk the wrath of her own leader? She knew, odd and twisted a relationship it was, Glowstar felt close to Foxstar. Would she be willing to do something for her that would certainly anger Foxstar if she were to find out? When she were to find out? If she had come here for any other reason, perhaps she would've stopped to admire the Hidden Pond, taking note of what it looked like and how she was led here. As it was, the gaze she swept over the place was distant, the Janus barely taking in the sight as she stood only just inside the secret hollow.
She remained silent for several long moments after Glowstar talked. The only sign she even heard her was the curl of the edge of her mouth, the beginning of a sneer at her last statement. She certainly owed her something. But would she really consider helping her with this, with all the risks that came with it? How would she even start? She stared off at the water, mind searching for the words to ask for help. In the end she began by simply saying, "I feel like I'm drowning." As she said it out loud, she realized how well it really summed up her feelings. She felt suffocated and trapped, things seemingly getting worse and worse with every passing moment. And each of those moments brought with it the certainty the next would be her last. SunClan was slowly burying her alive, and she was the one who dug the hole in the first place. Why couldn't she have turned to Glowstar for help first instead of looping herself into a bargain with Foxstar? She dug her claws into the ground underpaw, orange eyes glaring down at the ground as she ran over the what-ifs in her head, thoughts that had become all too common as of late for the scruffy she-cat.
Eventually, taking a slow breath in order to bury her emotions back under the surface, she looked back up at Glowstar. "I'm losing myself, and I can't stand it any more." It was the first time she admitted as much out loud. For so long she had convinced herself that she was becoming a better version of herself, the version of herself she always was supposed to be, but becoming a Janus had only ever turned her into a monster. With a lash of her tail she went on, telling her, "Every step I take and word I speak feels like it's going to be my last. Foxstar has her claws at my throat, and if I show the slightest hint of something off she won't hesitate..." She couldn't continue on for a moment, her throat tight as her gaze drifted towards the ground again. She focused on her breathing, forcing herself to keep from hyperventilating before she was finally able to say, "I don't know what to do. If I try to leave, I'll almost certainly be killed. But if I stay..." If she stayed, she'd be facing a fate worse than death. Everything that made her Twistedecho, everything that Glowstar talked about missing so much every time they talked. It would all eventually be worn away, dead to spare the shell she would, that she already had, become.
She watched as slowly the weight of so many prying eyes pinning Twistedecho in place for years slowly lifted. When there was no one around, where for a breath of peace there was safety in knowing it was only her and Glowstar she unraveled and there she was. There the whole time. Drowning. What kind of insane amount of pressure was put on her daily? What amount of dread did a cat have to feel to
accept years of this kind of abuse to only one day feel strong enough to walk away from it all. Risking everything for a help she didn't seem confident in receiving.
Glowstar took a step forward looking down at Twistedecho before her paw gently lifted up the Janus's chin, "You'll stay," Glowstar said with one of those motherly smiles that said everything would be okay.
Her auburn body sat down next to the Janus leaning in close to her fur, "Remember when I told you about the clan I abandoned? I was a spy before I was an assassin and... When things became rough my mentor abandoned me too and she never came back for me," Glowstar said, her voice as gentle as a breeze, "You'll never know the utter shame I feel for what I did to you, but I promise you, I won't let your story end like mine did. I am here you for Twistedecho," Glowstar lied a firm paw atop of Twistedecho's, "If Foxstar has a problem with it then the Pride will just have to end. She can come back when she's ready to be a good friend, but please. Don't go back for another moment, you're protected by DayClan now like you should have been from the start."
Her eyes were glittery with tears and it was clear in her eyes she was just barely resisting embracing Twistedecho entirely, "I was... So afraid for you for so long."
Her tail drooped to the ground, all the tension that had built up for years seeming to fade for a moment. She wanted so badly to take her on the offer, to believe what her smile claimed. But old habits died hard. She pulled away suddenly, not enough to entirely break contact but enough to pull her paw from under Glowstar's and lean away from the other she-cat. She couldn't pull back up her mask fast enough and the softening in her expression twisted into terror. She couldn't take her offer. It wouldn't be right. It couldn't possibly be safe.
"But what about your Clan?" she asked, pausing long enough to at least attempt to control the rising pitch of her voice. "You don't know how far she'll go to get at me." Silently she added, 'I don't even know...' Her bargain with Foxstar was her biggest fear. She knew that Twistedecho had betrayed SunClan once before, and she was certain that once she realized the Janus had betrayed her directly that she would never know peace. Surely not even Glowstar could protect her from the High Priestess' wrath, right? And with the knowledge she had as a Janus, she knew that there wouldn't be a soul that would try to defend her from her birth Clan. She knew everything, and SunClan held far too many secrets to want her to live outside the Clan. A regular warrior or terrified initiate was hunted down by Foxstar's elite. She would know. She was part of that 'elite'. She couldn't ever imagine the High Priestess letting her slip from between her claws, even if she had to send all of SunClan out to make her pay.
And even then that wasn't her only concern. Would DayClan really be so willing to shelter a SunClan cat? Especially one that had the blood of their own on her paws? Would DayClan simply become the same, where she was terrified with every bite of prey and moment alone that some cat would seek to end her life for one reason or another? Here she wouldn't have the protection of position. She had to drop her still-raised paw onto the ground, digging her claws in to try to stop her paws from shaking. Glowstar had been afraid for her? She was talking like she didn't need to anymore. Twistedecho felt convinced that she'd never be able to feel safe no matter where she went. Maybe it was just her burden to bear. Cursed to always be hunted and threatened. She had worked hard to get over the fears ingrained in her mind by her mother, work that had only ever amounted to just hiding it all better, but as her mind scrambled through every worst-case scenario it could come up with it all became too much. She dropped onto her belly with a low whimper, the best she could do to swallow the wail threatening to burst out. "Maybe it'd be better to just kill me now," she meowed, bitterness and fear both shaking her voice. "I'm sure Foxstar wouldn't mind doing the honors."
"To hell with my kingdom," Glowstar grinned widely, the look in her eyes was more dangerous than the night. She walked up once more beside Twistedecho sitting down and more seriously added, "A clan isn't worth a damn if we don't protect the people in it. You were a member the moment you signed up to be apart of the surveillance team. I've loyally followed Foxstar the best I can as her best friend and as her warrior, but she cursed my mate and she lied about my kits and she attacked my family. She may have paid greatly for each of these, but she's never been sorry. She's hurt too many people, so if I leave her and the pride I know NightClan will choose me over Foxstar, the cat that stole their leaders life and I know that Renegade Regime will be on my side after she attacked them. Both allies are so close to DayClan that even if SunClan tried to attack they wouldn't stand a chance because our reinforcements can enter within moments. If she wants everyone wrapped around her paw she better not touch you, talk to you, look at you. She's already on thin ice that quite frankly if she gets even a little heated with me my patience will melt that thin line of ice and everything she worked so hard to maintain will fall through the fractures of ice with her."
She let out an annoyed huff of air, "I'm just... So mad at her so don't worry I have your back and so does DayClan. Because I'm serious, I am one bad mood away from just casually dropping the pride from existence so she better not tempt me by messing with you."
Glowstar hadn't even finished talking before her head screamed at her that it wouldn't be enough. No one could really stop Foxstar once she had her mind set on something, not even if the whole forest worked together to keep her away, and she knew that the moment she heard of her desertion she would stop at nothing to get her. But, eventually, she gave another shake that ruffled the fur along her spine, forcing the thoughts away. She looked up at Glowstar, quickly catching the dangerous look in her eyes. It was a look she wouldn't want to face against, and for a moment she wondered if even Foxstar would want to risk it. Focusing on slowing her rapid breathing, she realized if ever there was or would be a cat that could protect her from Foxstar it was this one. Maybe she could be safe. All she'd have to do would be to follow her back to a place that had always felt more like home than the Clan she was born into. She'd just have to trust the cat that, despite the monster she became, never gave up on her.
She propped herself back up halfway, orange eyes flashing for a moment with hope before she pressed the top of her head into the auburn she-cat's shoulder. "Thank you, Glowstar," she meowed, her voice strained. Maybe there was still a chance for a happy ending for her, in spite of everything.
"Let's just start with some ground rules for your safety. No going on any border patrols, we can't take that risk that a SunClan cat will see you. We both know SunClan, someone will eventually come and attack you, it's inevitable. I want a warrior at your side when you wander through the territory until they strike. If a warrior attacks you and DayClan is immediately at your defense it'll be a strong message when that cat is sent back injured than you fending the cat off by yourself. If you fight off a SunClan cat by yourself it's saying that there's more of an opening to get you and we can't have that. If you need some alone time just tell at least two people where you're going and don't go near any of the borders. Until SunClan makes a move they're unpredictable and I'd lose it if something happened to you Twist. So for everyone's safety try to comply with these guidelines," Glowstar smiled weakly.
She walked past Twistedecho nodding to the hidden pond, "This is a secret place where DayClan cats like to hangout. You'll never find me here, I respect it as a place for cats to people to gossip about my leadership skills and not have a leader around to hover over them and tell them to get back to work."
It would be a lie to say she was completely comfortable with the rules Glowstar placed upon her. She came here to escape rules that limited her, but at the same time she knew they were only reasonable. It was Glowstar showing she really was concerned for her safety. So she gave a small nod. "Of course, Glowstar." It wasn't anything she was concerned about having to follow anyways. She certainly didn't want to risk any SunClan cats seeing her on DayClan territory. And she'd probably (eventually) feel at least a little safer with another cat by her side in case her Clanmates - ex-Clanmates - came looking anyways.
Now that the terror of a few moments ago began to fade, Twistedecho took the time to take in her surroundings. It was habit, to take notes of every detail with a glance behind her to take note of what the entrance looked like. It certainly was quite the hidden place. If she hadn't been shown the way, she was certain she would've far too easily overlooked the place. A good spot to keep note of, in case she needed a place to hide. Hopefully she wouldn't need to make use of its relative solitude as often as she had with her nest back in the Janus' camp. "It's a beautiful place," she noted, though in her head she couldn't help but think of how Foxstar would react to a place like this in SunClan. She certainly wouldn't leave it a place free from her watchful gaze. a thought that she used to reassure herself that she had made the right decision.
"Glad you think so since it's your new home. You'll fit in great though! Plenty of cats are outsiders, we only have Immortal Council member that isn't an outsider, Windchaser," Glowstar explained.
Glowstar began looking up and down at trees and pulling away at branches, "Come on, let's make you a nest to sleep in. We usually use the willow branches in camp since they have a bend to them and fill it up with moss and tons of feathers. Our clan has a lot of those after all."
Her paws touched her ears where a feather hung on either side, glued on by sap. Glowstar's tail immediately went up, "Oh! And you could choose your own feathers. Traditionally the parent picks one feather and then once the kit grows up to an apprentice they find their own second feather. So you could hunt for both feathers if you want, I'll come with. Or you could hunt for one feather and I can choose your first one out," She winked before adding, "Though, not everyone in DayClan has feathers so it won't be weird if you didn't want one."
