Celestialglow sat in camp, waiting for her apprentice. She wasnt in any hurry to begin his training. She really didn't care when he woke up. The stars faded as the sun rose, painting milky colors across the morning sky, chasing away the darkness of the night before. It was a surprisingly warm morning for early new-leaf. However, far in the distance a wall of dark rolling clouds seemed to be creeping up on the sun, threatening to hide it. The sandy orange she-cat shrugged it off. If her apprentice wanted to train in the rain, that was up to him. The rain didnt bother her any. She licked a paw and ran it over one ear, a blank expression on her face.

Sleep had eluded Firepaw most of the night. He only had fitful snatches of sleep because of the excitement that raced through him. He was finally an apprentice! Even though he didn't get the proper amount of sleep, it didn't seem to bother him. He was raring to go as soon as it got light. He left his den and immediately saw Celestialglow grooming herself. "Hi!" he meowed as he ran up to greet her.
"Hello" she mewed simply, looking down at her apprentice. She didn't offer him a smile nor did she ask how his night was. Instead she asked, "have you eaten?" They had a long day of training ahead of them and it was important for him to eat before they left camp.

"Uh ... no," he replied hesitantly. Was Celestialglow testing him already? he wondered. "I heard some older apprentices saying we couldn't eat until after we have hunted and everyone else ate first." His stomach growled as he cast a glance at the fresh kill pile.
She nodded, "And they are absolutely right. However, I cannot have you training on an empty stomach. You will not focus properly. Choose something small enough to keep your strength up for the time being."

Firepaw's face brightened. "Really? Okay!" he mewed energetically. "I'll hurry!" He ran off to the fresh kill pile and began to paw through it. I'm going to love training with Celestialglow, he thought. She's cool! He had to find something small like a mouse or a vole maybe. Nothing was looking appetizing after having set overnight. All the good pieces were eaten during last evening's meal. AH! Here's something! he thought as he pulled out an unappealing vole. He quickly gulped it down and then ran back over to Celestialglow. "I'm ready!" he announced.
She smiled, "Good. Now, lets get moving. Unfortunately, we aren't going to do anything exciting today" she mewed to her apprentice as they exited the camp. "The first day for an apprentice is never really the most exciting. You must first know your territory before you can begin the rest of your training. You will need to know what is yours and what isn't." She came upon Waterclan border. "This is Waterclan border" she explained. "Take a good sniff and memorize their scent. You want to know who is crossing your border if they ever get brave enough to do so."

Firepaw wasn't discouraged at all by her caution the day wouldn't be exciting. Seeing new land was an excitement all it's own to the new apprentice. He drew in some air and then immediately he wrinkled his nose in disgust. "What's that awful stench?" He wiped his nose on his own shoulder in an attempt to get rid of the smell.
She laughed, "Well, that would be Waterclan smell. Kind of a fishy scent, huh? Thats because that is their main food source. We have birds, mice, and squirrels. They have mostly fish."

"All I can say is I'm glad I'm an EarthClan cat!" Firepaw meowed emphatically. "Why would any cat want to go around smelling like dead fish? Why don't they eat normal prey like we do?" He was suddenly very grateful the cat who found him and his siblings was an Earthclan cat and not a Waterclan cat.
She twitched her whiskers in amusement. "Indeed. But they probably think that way about us too." She led the way to Brookclan territory and stood at the border there. "Smell them? They are almost a mixture of both Waterclan and Earthclan scents. That is because they eat both" she explained.

Firepaw was disappointed at the sight of the rogue lands. He had always imagined the land being....well more wild looking. But the vista that stretched out in front of him looked like any normal land. "Oh, this is it?" he asked. "I guess I expected something more exciting." He figured his imagine had run wild with all the stories he heard from the queens and elders.
