Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
The best part about being a warrior? There was nobody to tell her when to get up or to yowl at her when she was late. Maybe for patrols, but she didn't have any today; it was just training for her and her new apprentice, Echopaw. Aconiteleap look her time sleeping in and getting ready in the morning, then finally strolled from her den near sunhigh and looked around for the young cat.
Echopaw had already been up and ready for her first day. The bright eyed she-cat was overly excited for her first day of being an apprentice and she almost burst with anticipation. Then she saw her mentor, Aconiteleap and rushed over to her, tail high and eyes gleaming. "Goodmorning!" She chimed as she stood before her mentor.
"Good morning," she greeted with a yawn. The creamy she-cat glanced over her, appraising, then smiled. "You seem ready for training, huh? Have you eaten? Said goodbye to your family? We'll be training alone today."
"I said goodbye but I haven't eaten yet. I was hoping to bring back something on my first day so I can contribute to the clan!" She puffed out her chest.
"Well, we can certainly try," she agreed amiably, "but not if you don't have the energy to hunt it down, or the patience because your stomach is growing. Come; let's split a quick mouse then head out." She didn't wait for an answer, leading the way over to the fresh-kill pile. Not all mentors would let their apprentices eat right before training, but hunting wasn't as strenuous as fighting and required a great deal of focus, so she thought this safer.
She nodded, refusing to argue with her mentor. She followed Aconiteleap to the fresh-kill pile and chose a small, scrawny mouse. It was enough to keep her energy long enough until she was finished with her training. No one would miss this piece of prey so she may as well eat it. She settled down with it, closer to the fresh-kill pile. "Do you want a bite?" She asked her mentor before she even thought of taking a bite.
Her blue eyes glittered with amusement as Echopaw thought to offer it to her first. Those were the kind of manners her own mother had tried - and mostly failed - to teach her. She didn't answer but instead leaned in and neatly took a bite, then leaned back and waved her tail for the apprentice to begin eating.
Aconiteleap remained lying down, slowly and deliberately neatening her whiskers and cleaning her muzzle, examining her claws for any dust that had settled between them, before she finally, finally rose to her paws with a discrete nod. "Then let's head out," she replied, and took the lead.
Echopaw waited patiently for her mentor and when Aconiteleap was finally ready, she followed her out of camp. "What are we going to do today?" she asked with enthusiasm. She couldn't wait to start her training.
"I suppose we'll have to do some hunting if you want to bring back some prey," she replied absently, raising her muzzle to breath in the cool night air. "We can hunt further away from camp, show you some landmarks on the way."
"Okay!" she chirped, giving a little bounce. She couldn't wait to show all of her clanmates the prey that she would catch; and maybe when her mentor shows her around, they will run into trouble! What a story that would be! She could hardly contain her excitement. She looked at her mentor with admiration but also confusion. She knew the warrior had been out of camp countless times but she couldn't imagine not being excited every time she left camp. Why wasn't Aconiteleap excited too?
Hanging out with other apprentices wasn't unusual to her, of course, nor was hanging out with excited apprentices; but she couldn't say she was thrilled about it all the same. After going through multiple training partners she just wanted to be on her own. Her last pair, Blazepaw, had been newly promoted while she was on the verge of promotion herself, so she had almost been like a second mentor to him, and now she truly did have an apprentice. It wasn't ideal for her in the least.
Her creamy tail swished as she pushed her way through the undergrowth and onto a track headed for the closest border. "Keep close to me and don't get lost," she told her calmly. "And don't be too loud or you'll scare off prey."
The proceeded in silence, until she paused, with a twitch of her ears. "Hear that? Smell that?" she murmured softly, without a glance down or back. "There's a squirrel nearby."
Echopaw perked her ears and sniffed the air. She could smell it. She recognized the smell from the fresh-kill pile. "I smell it" she whispered. She could also hear it slashing through the leaves, making a ruckus. Were squirrels always this noisy?
"Good. I'm going to send it your way, and you catch it," she whispered. She didn't give the apprentice a chance to argue, melting into the undergrowth as she slipped away.
The cream she-cat circled downwind with practiced movements, then deftly located and caught the squirrel between her forepaws. She was careful not to kill it-- instead, she dug her claws lightly into its leg to give it a limp and slow it down, then released it facing the apprentice. Unaware, the squirrel limped straight toward Echopaw.
