Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Fawnheart blinked open her pretty amber eyes and peered out of her den. Dense fog lingered in the camp, making it hard for Fawnheart to determine what time of day it was. She could just barely make out her own paws. A damp chill seeped to her bones and made her shiver. Summer had gone so quickly and leaf fall was just beginning, bringing in the chilly air with it. They have been fortunate enough to still be finding prey but they will all soon be in hiding. She padded over to the fresh-kill pile and took a good sniff. The dawn patrol had already hunted and a fresh mouse was sitting on top. She took it in her jaws and carried it to the edge of the camp and began to enjoy her meal. The warmth of the mouse sent a nice wave of warmth throughout her body with each bite she took.
"Good morning, Fawnheart," came a voice from close by. Peachblush appeared at the medicine cat's side, giving her a warm smile despite his tired appearance. After seemingly-endless weeks of nothing but work for him, he'd finally scheduled a day with very little work to do at all, where he could speak to a few Clanmates he hadn't talked to in a while (and of course, sleep). "It's getting colder day by day..."
She avoided the deputy's gaze and focused on her paws. She nodded, "I dread leaf-bare. So many sicknesses to keep track of during this time. I'll be far too busy and worried that I won't have time to train my apprentice. I'm hoping for a healthy leaf-bare but that's a pretty big thing to ask for." She finally looked at her friend, concern in her eyes.
Peachblush hummed in agreement, biting his lip. "Well, if you ever need help with anything this leaf-bare, I won't hesitate to send you a dozen warriors to assist you. Speaking of which, is there anything I can do now? Not too short on any herbs, perhaps?" He'd always felt kind of useless around leaf-bare, being so eager to help and yet always hesitant to actually offer any due to his lack of medical knowledge.
She thought for a moment and then nodded, "Im actually running low on catmint and I will need a big supply of that this leaf-bare. There's one catch though, they usually grow in twoleg gardens... We will need to go find some near the twoleg dens. You could come with me if you want"
"Of course!" Peachblush nodded, immediately agreeing. Though he'd been stressed lately, he never turned down an opportunity to have an adventure near the Twoleg dens. "Ah, were you planning on leaving around now, or...?"
"That I am," he purred, having perked up considerably now that he felt like he was helping out, rather than being worn out. "It's lucky I scheduled myself a pretty free day today." Which turned out to be not-so-free in the end, but it's not like we can just not go collect herbs, after all...
She flicked her tail and nodded, heading toward the camp entrance. Arriving out in the forest, the air was much cooler than in the camp. Her breath clouded in front of her muzzle as she made her way toward the twoleg dens, the frozen leaves crunching under her paws. "Leaf-bare is almost here." She fluffed up her fur to keep warm.
"It sure is," Peachblush remarked, "and I'm not exactly happy about that. Everything gets harder during leafbare, but it's not just the sickness, or the lack of prey..." he murmured, taking a second to glance up at the trees. Their leaves were still a familiar shade of red and brown, but they would soon fall away and become bare once the winter hit. "Clan morale takes a hit too, and it can be hard to keep everyone motivated. That's what I'm most nervous about, really. But if we have a good collection of herbs, perhaps our Clanmates will feel a little more reassured that we'll make it through."
Fawnheart continued walking, "oh yes. Your right. It will be hard keeping the clan motivated. Perhaps we should organize more patrols? Keep them busy, y'know? "
Peachblush slowed for a moment, seeing they were beginning to reach the Twoleg nests. "...Huh. You know, a patrol just like this would have been good to boost the other warriors' morale..." he murmured, looking to the side awkwardly. "Though I guess it's boosting my morale. What's the best place around here for catmint, by the way?" he asked, glancing around. He didn't often visit this area of the territory, having no connection or kittypet ancestry despite what other cats may assume.
"Just around this corner. There is an elder twoleg that lives here and she never takes care of her garden so her yard is full of random plants. Including cat mint!" She rounded the corner and came upon a run down twoleg den with over grown yards. The old twoleg was sitting in her rocking chair on the porch, staring out to nothing in particular. "Poor twoleg." Fawnheart whispered, "she always looks so sad... "
Fawnheart snuck into the back yard and slipped through some over grown bushes and paused in front of a healthy green bushel of catmint. "Perfect! They haven't begun to wither yet!" She began plucking the herb by the stems and placing them in a pile. "Take as much as you can but keep some in case these wither and we need to come back for more. I wish there was a way to preserve the fresh ones."
Peachblush's gaze lingered on the old Twoleg for a few moments longer, just a hint of sympathy evident in his eyes. "Is she alone all the time...?" he murmured, mostly to himself. "Poor Twoleg indeed..." He shifted his attention onto collecting the herbs, grunting softly as he ripped a few from their roots in the ground and placed them onto the growing pile. "I've heard WinterClan keeps theirs in snow," he remarked, "...although come to think of it, that might have just been something my mother said, to try and trick me."
Fawnheart nodded, "most of the time she is alone but I have seen some other twolegs come and go from there." Then she turned he attention back to the herbs. "I'm not sure if that would work. We never get a lot of snow but I don't think you can preserve herbs that way. You can preserve prey like that"
“As long as she’s got someone,” Peachblush murmured, focusing once more on collecting the herbs. “And thank StarClan that we don’t get more snow than we already do. Though a lot of the younger cats would probably be happy. Me? My joints ache too much,” he purred, despite the fact he wasn’t that old yet.
"Leaf-bare has barely begun. There will be more snow on the way" she replied, gathering up the rest of the herbs she had collected into a neater pile. "Oh, Peachblush, your not old" she purred, twitching her whiskers in amusement.
"This'll be my third leafbare!" he protested, adding to Fawnheart's pile and immediately messing it up again accidentally. It's a good thing I never became a medicine cat, he thought, whiskers twitching. "Maybe three leafbares isn't a lot, but some don't even make it through one."
Fawnheart didnt fuss when he messed up the pile. She fixed it and grabbed as much as she could in her jaws and signaled for him to follow her back to camp. "This is my first leaf-bare" she mumbled around a mouthful of herb. "But Kinkedwing told me many tales about it. I was born just when green-leaf had barely started. It was cool outside but not freezing. The clan was just recovering from the leaf-bare. So this will be my first full leaf-bare ever and my first as a medicine cat."
"So you're a summer kit, then..." Peachblush nodded. "So was I, actually. Although that was a while ago now, obviously." He rose to his paws and followed Fawnheart, giving a short glance back to the lonely Twoleg before continuing on. "Well, I hope that the herbs we've gathered today will make your first leaf-bare a little easier on you."
