Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
(A massive Greencough outbreak has occurred in FallClan, overwhelming their new medicine cat Softpelt and her limited experience. Fortunately she knows obviously that catmint is the cure... But FallClan stock is extremely low, making the circumstances dire.
Feel free to have your cats come down with greencough or whitecough and come to Softpelt needing treatment! And feel free to have cats fearing the outbreak and fretting about it occuring so soon after FallClan returned home.)
Breakingkit's chest was heaving in ragged pants, the little kitten lying in a nest as Softpelt fretted alongside her, the white she cat's blue eyes worried and concerned. She had finally gotten the kitten to sleep but it had been a struggle.
She paced around anxiously not sure what to do, this kit was another addition to the many cats that had shown up in her den coughing. She feared it could be greencough, but was holding out that it might just be whitecough still. Thus making her separate all cats who were coughing from the rest of the clan... But even if it wasn't greencough, it was still many many cats.
Fawnheart had helped her determine it was whitecough that afflicted Breakingkit and some of the other cats, but that had been last night when they'd determined this. These cats seemed to have gotten worse, and now Softpelt was eyeing the store of catmint worriedly. The store only had a few shabby sprouts Softpelt had luckily grabbed from a patch nearby. She'd wanted to leave the rest as it was just sprouts... then a frost came in an killed the rest of the growth leaving her with a small supply and she hadn't had a chance to go search the territory for any growth that may have avoided destruction from the frost.
Fawnheart padded into the den with a small bundle of catmint in her jaws. She set them down beside Softpelt. "I had my old apprentice, Whitepaw, sneak me some catmint from my store in Springclan." she explained. She didn't want to strode back into Springclan and demand she take herbs for another clan. Eternalstar would definitely question her loyalty then. She was grateful that Whitepaw had agreed to fetch her some. "It isn't much but hopefully it will help." She scanned the den at the many cats that were ill. She was glad she was here to help Softpelt. Without an apprentice, the Fallclan medicine cat would be overwhelmed. She took a look at Breakingkit, a look of worry in her eyes. She sniffed the kit, trying not to wake her. She could smell infection and it worried her. She wondered how long she could keep the infection from spreading.
Softpelt glanced at the catmint, trying not to grimace as she cast a worried look to the numerous other nests that were filled with cats. She could already tell that if these cats got worse, if it was becoming Greencough like she feared, the supplies Fawnheart had managed to get just wouldn't be enough.
But that wasn't Fawnheart's fault, and Softpelt turned to her and pushed down her worry and frustration to be courteous. "Thank you Fawnheart, I know how difficult that must've been." She murmured. Her ears lowered. "We need more though I think... Were you able to check the territory at all? Or has frost... Has frost wiped all of it out?" She asked, an edge of worry in her mew. Perhaps Fawnheart had just figured it'd be easiest to go to SpringClan first? It would be a lot quicker and immediate than searching the territory desperately for catmint.... maybe.
"I only went to the Springclan border and that is where I saw Whitepaw and asked him to sneak us some catmint. I haven't checked the whole territory. I can get right on that if you'd like" she offered, her face showing all of her concerns. She really didn't want to watch cats die like this. Not if there was something she could do about it.
Softpelt nodded, "Yes please Fawnheart, I know we had a really bad frost... But maybe there's some left." She said softly trying not to sound as worried as she felt looking at the cats. "They're getting worse and I think we're going to be looking at greencough...." She murmured worriedly. "Can you send for Thrushstar as you go? I want to let him know, maybe he can send some defenders and fighters to comb around the territory as well,"
"Of course" Fawnheart responded, dipping her head in farewell before retreating from the den. She was bound and determined to find more catmint; even if it took her all day and all night.
Sunkit rushed into the medicine cat den. He knew his sister was ill, but didn't know how bad it was. He planned on visiting Breakingkit that day, but when he heard her wheezing he immediately rushed to be by her side. The young orange tabby looked at Softpelt, his green eyes fighting back wells of tears. "Is Breakingkit going to be okay? What's wrong with her?"
Thrushstar followed Sunkit into the medicine cat den, a worried look in his eyes. "She will be perfectly fine." he said with a smile. "How has it been, Softpelt?" he asked.
Softpelt winced when Sunkit came in and went over to Breakingkit. "She's very sick Sunkit, you have to keep your distance so you don't get it too. she's very contagious right now." She said gently putting out her tail to keep Sunkit from getting too close. "But Fawnheart and I are doing the best we can to help make her better."
When Thrushstar entered Softpelt straightened up. "Well... we've had a few more cases develop..." She said grimly nodding towards the cats in the medicine cat den. "But we're very low on catmint." She meowed worriedly. "Fawnheart went to go look for some, but just in case we should gather more."
Thrushstar nodded. "We can create a patrol. I'll announce it to the Clan." he said and started to walk towards the center of the camp. "I believe in you, Softpelt." he said with a confident smile.
With fear in his heart, Thrushstar announced across the camp, "All those whom are old enough to catch their own prey, please join me in the middle of camp."
Galaxymist padded carefully into the camps clearing, her ears flicking curiously as a Clan meeting was called. her tail drew neatly around her paws, affection clearing her face when she heard one of her nephews stumbling over to sit next to her. Stooping low, she nudged Paintedkit so that she was sitting closer. "Keep very quiet and listen to what the leader says; I won't let you sit with me unless you behave."
Padding from the camp entrance came Koispirit, her eyes wandering the clearing before she settled on the fresh-kill pile. She hurried made to deposit her catch for the day before settling herself in the camp clearing, full attention directed upon Thrushstar. She could only guess that this would be about the Greencough.
Tears began to well as the golden kit sniffled, looking down as to hide his fear. "Will Breakingkit really be okay? I can't lose my sister..." He scratched at the stone below him with small claws. "I can't lose my sister! She's all I have! We have to get promoted together! We have to go on adventures together! We have to... we have to live together..." He broke down.
Foxfoot lowly made his way over to the gathering, wrapping his feathered tail around his paws as he sat.
Pumpkinkit bounced her little way over to her aunt, bumping into her sister in the at the end. "OOF!"
Pearpaw glanced up at the call for a meeting from where he'd been sitting with Mandarinfeather. After exchanging a look, the warrior cautiously led the way closer with the apprentice bounding at his heels. What was the announcement? Was he going to become a warrior?! Pearpaw was a young apprentice, but still, it would be sooo cool if he or his denmates got promoted!
Thymerobin limped closer and sat down in the center of the gathered cats, her blue ears twitched back and gaze calm as it fell upon the leader.
Galaxymist suppressed a laugh of amusement as Pumpkinkit also came barrelling from the nursery to join her sister. "Hush," she said sternly, nudging the two with her paw and herding them out of the way of others. Paintedkit could also be heard suppressing small and quiet giggles.
Fawnheart paused right before exiting camp. Perhaps she should hear what Thrushstar says before she goes running off into the forest in search of some cat mint. She padded over to stay below Thrushstar, her ears pricked in interest.
Thrushstar gave a nervous cough and began speaking. "It pains me to say this, but it seems as if GreenCough has made its way into our camp." he looked down at his paws, thinking of what to say next. He was unsure how his clan would react to the news. "We are going to be creating a patrol to retrieve more catmint for our stores. If you feel any kind of pain or itch in your chest, please go to Softpelt immediately to be checked. We will construct a new den for those affected. Galaxymist, Pearpaw, would you want to come with me to gather materials?" he asked.
Thymerobin frowned. Greencough was never good, and she was too new to the clan to understand how prepared they were to face the threat. Thrushstar, at least, seemed calm; that was a good start.
He got to go on the super special patrol?! Wait until he told EVERYONE about this! “Yeah! Yessir!” Pearpaw chirped, beaming up at his leader. This would be easy. He’d been plant-gathering once already, so he already knew the rules: namely, don’t pull up budding trees by the roots and drag them all the way home.
"Of course," she agreed at her name being mentioned, the tortoiseshell she-cat standing to her paws and dipping her head respectfully; much more calm and quiet with her own appreciation at being chosen than the latter. Nonetheless, she smiled in amusement at Pearpaw's readiness. At least his enthusiasm could be help to gathering as much as they could possibly gather.
"Auntie, auntie! I wanna go looking for flowers!" Pumpkinkit said gleefully in a rather hushed tone. Her auntie rarely seemed to leave her sibling's side in the nursery, so she was excited when she heard her name.
Sunkit watched from the medicine cat den as Thrushstar formed the gathering and subsequent patrols. He felt helpless; it was as if the entire clan didn't even know what they're doing! How could they all just stand there and talk while his sister could possibly be dying? He ignored Softpelts warnings and continued to stand diligently at Breakingkits side.
Galaxymist stared down at where the little kittens voice resounded, her milky eyes flashing with amusement as she gently flicked her ear with her tail. "Sorry, but not this time sweetheart. This is a very important job to do, or else more cats will get sick," she explained carefully. "Y'know, I'm sure you could actually find yourself some plants to gather right here in camp, with your siblings."
