Ragingspire's thick bronze fur was fluffed up and his expression was grim. The trail was leading right toward the meadow where Bonefang had seen the fox. That wasn't a good sign. "If they're smart, as soon as they scented fox they turned back and headed right back this way," he replied, but he wasn't optimistic. If the pair had come back, surely they'd have seen them by now; they must be in the meadow still. With any luck, the fox wasn't nearby, and was hunting elsewhere. His ears pricked suddenly at the distant call of a voice, and he came to a halt. "Did you hear that?"

Sootpaw's breathing was ragged from the strain of running on his leg and the sheer fear rushing through him. He forced himself to keep running even as his legs were shaking from the effort. "Help! Help!" he yowled again. He plunged closer to the river and scented warriors. Hope gave him strength, and he sought them out, then skidded to a halt in front of Ragingspire and Bonefang. "F-Fox!" he panted to them, blue eyes wide. "Pan--- Pan--- Pantherpaw's stuck in a tree!"

"Yes!" Bonefang replied to Ragingspire. He was about to say more when he saw Sootpaw hurrying toward them. It was obvious he had been injured from how he ran. "Pantherpaw?" he asked when he heard Sootpaw's words. Concern about his granddaughter ran through him but he was worried about him as well. "How are you? Are you hurt badly?" The senior warrior had smelled the fresh blood on the apprentice.
A dark, grim looked settled over the young warrior's expression at the words. He cast a look at Bonefang, then cautiously ran ahead to begin scouting out the situation. He kept low and careful, reluctant to start a fight quite yet.
He gasped for breath and nodded a few more times. "I'm fine, go help her," he told him in a rush. In truth, he wasn't sure how bad his injury was, but he knew his friend was in danger and that was far more important. Sootpaw could still stand and run and that meant he wasn't too badly hurt, right?

Bonefang eyed Sootpaw carefully before responding. He was no medicine cat but his wounds looked painful. "You better see Graythorn anyway about those cuts and scratches when you get back to camp." He took off running to catch up with Ragingspire.
It had been awhile since Pantherpaw saw Sootpaw run off for help. "Please StarClan, guide his steps to help soon," she prayed out loud. That only elicited extra growls and barking from the fox below. Isn't he ever going to give up? she wondered. She figured she could outlast the fox but how long would it take? Was Sootpaw badly injured? What if he couldn't make it back to camp? This whole misadventure was her doing. If she had kept her mouth shut about the fox none of this would have happened.

Nodding, too tired and scared and hurting to disagree, he turned and limped toward the camp.
Ragingspire had crept carefully close, hiding in the low scrubs, to get an eye on the situation. They just had to cause trouble with a fox, didn't they? The young warrior already had more than enough experiences with foxes and it had never ended without someone badly hurt. With any luck this would be the time they broke the pattern. He retreated a few steps when he heard Bonefang drawing near, then explained what he saw in a quiet voice. "She's in the tree. The fox is pacing around it and it looks hungry, if you ask me."

Bonefang nodded grimly. "I agree. The fox does look like it's hungry. For one thing, why else would it stay under that tree when it could leave and hunt rabbits instead? Pantherpaw was lucky to be near that tree to be able to use it as an escape route. There's very few of them at all in this meadow." There were plenty of bushes and rolling hills in the rabbit meadow along with tall grasses but trees were scarce. He studied the area for a while trying to come up with a plan. "Any ideas?"
From her vantage point Pantherpaw had noticed some kind of creatures off to her right but the ground cover hid their identity from her. She considered calling out in case they were cats but what if they were more foxes? She didn't need anymore trouble than she already had. She decided to keep quiet and sit tight.
Ragingspire nodded, pleasantly surprised by the warrior's guess. It was a good point - the fox should have left by now. "I've got a few, but you might not like them," he replied with a grim smile. As an apprentice he had shared quite a few of his unorthodox ideas and Frostcloud, then deputy, had thought them all terrible - though she'd agreed in the end. "I can run out and distract it while you get her down, then run and find some place to hide; or, we can catch a rabbit and maybe if we leave it out nearby, the fox will wander over. Or it'll smell the blood on us and come hunting some new prey."

Bonefang stood in thought contemplating what Ragingspire had suggested as he stared at the fox, the tree, and the apprentice stuck in it. Finally he spoke. "Actually this is a tricky situation," he began. "I really don't think the first idea is too feasible because you might get trapped and then we'd be back in the same kind of situation having to rescue you. Your second idea has merit although it irks me to no end to loose a rabbit. But I think we could sacrifice one to save Pantherpaw." He paused and looked over the meadow. "All we have to do now is find one."
Ragingspire shrugged. "Better to have me captured than an apprentice," he replied, but he was more than prepared to settle for the other idea. "A rabbit it is. Shouldn't be too hard to find one roaming around here." He turned and tasted the air for prey, then frowned. Maybe it would be a little bit harder than he first thought: the smell of the fox so near would have scared most critters far away from here.

Bonefang doubted that but kept his opinion to himself. What with three cats and a fox nearby no self respecting rabbit would be anywhere near here. "I'll look over toward the stream," Bonefang meowed. "I just wish there was a way to let Pantherpaw know were here to help her." He cast another look at the tree. The black she cat was still perched on a branch and the fox was still below. It had stopped it's pacing and was now staring up into the tree. "But we can't because the fox will know were here too," he half said to himself. "She should be safe enough for now. I'll be back as soon as I can with or without a rabbit. Good hunting."
"Good hunting," he replied. His gaze turned to the apprentice in the tree and for a moment he was tempted to call out. It felt wrong to sit here and do nothing; even if it was a mousebrained plan to run into yowling and try to take on the fox alone, his paws buzzed with the temptation. Ragingspire shook his head and turned to head back into the meadow away from the river and the fox. He couldn't start a fight, but he could quickly go get a rabbit so they could save the little apprentice.

Pantherpaw thought she noticed movement in the tall grasses far to her right. She trained her gaze in that direction and was rewarded with the sight of what she hoped was cat fur. At least it wasn't the color of fox fur. She opened her mouth to call out but refrained from doing so for fear that the fox might discover whoever was over there too. Besides, it might have been just her hopeful thinking anyway. The fur could have belonged to some prey instead. So she just settled to hurling insults down on the fox below her. She was no longer frightened by the fox. It hadn't made any move to reach her in the tree. Pantherpaw was more irritated than anything else because of her trapped position.
Bonefang traveled all the way back to the stream but still didn't detect any fresh prey scents. The stream gave him an idea but then he realized he didn't know if foxes liked fish. Should he take time to fish or continue to search for a rabbit? With a deep sigh, he turned back into the meadow. I hope Ragingspire is having better luck.
He traveled through the meadow and was relieved to find several fresh scents. He tracked them quickly, his tail swishing over the ground and eyes scanning for signs of their passage as he followed his nose. The rabbits had been moving quickly, and he feared they had disappeared back into their burrows; indeed, the first one he followed had done just that. Ragingspire stopped with a frown and looked around, wondering if there was a way to lure it out, when his eye caught on a small grey bunny trembling a few paces away. He slid into a crouch, then pursued it carefully, skimming over the low ground before surging forward.
Got it!
Grasping the small prey firmly by the scruff, he turned and raced back toward Bonefang.

Bonefang had hunted all the way back to the meeting place with Ragingspire without any luck. Perhaps they'd have to find another solution if his clanmate had the same luck as he. Pantherpaw was still in the tree but he couldn't see the fox. Did it leave? He wondered at first but then figured if it had, the apprentice would have left too. Taking a chance, the senior warrior stood up on his hind legs to get a better view. Sure enough, the fox was still there only it had decided to lay down and wait for it's prey. Just then he heard a noise. Something was approaching his position quickly. He readied himself for either fight or flight but then relaxed as an air current brought to his nose the familiar scent of his clanmate. And it was mingled with rabbit!
Even though it was a small rabbit, it was still heavy for the warrior, and he grunted with the effort of hauling it all the way back. Still, it would be worth it, and soon enough he was close enough to let it go and wave his tail toward the undergrowth he had hidden in with Bonefang earlier. "Hey," he hissed quietly, "you here? I got a rabbit." He pulled his head away and sniffed. It would be a problem if they both brought one, it would be confusing, but he didn't smell one near the other warrior.

"Yes, I'm here," Bonefang meowed softly as he emerged from the undergrowth. He was a bit upset he didn't find a rabbit but was very pleased Ragingspire did. "I'm glad you found one. I had no luck at all." He looked over at where Pantherpaw was marooned. "The fox is still at the tree but it's laying down. When I got back I thought it may have left but no such luck." His stomach growled as he looked at the dead rabbit. "When you get rested, let's get your plan into action."
Ragingspire nodded. As he took a few moments to catch his breath, he stared into the grass toward the fox and the tree. He couldn't see them, but he did his best to sketch the layout of the field in his mind, guessing where they could leave the rabbit. "One of us should take care of the rabbit and the other should lure Pantherpaw down from the tree while the fox is distracted. Is she hurt? That might complicated things," he mused, his gaze darkening with worry.

"I never thought about that," Bonefang admitted. It was something he hadn't considered after he saw she was safe at least for the moment. "She was strong enough to climb the tree so I'll have to believe she'll be able to run. If not, I'll have to help her deal with it. I'll be the one to help her if you lure the fox away with that rabbit." He tested the air current and felt it was now blowing crosswise from left to right and mentioned it to Ragingspire. "It would be less ground you'll have to cover to get upwind of that fox." He wanted to caution him to be careful but stopped himself. He didn't want to sound like a doting queen with her kits. "When you're ready, let's go."
Ragingspire nodded his agreement, listening to the older warrior's plan. He took one last deep breath, steadying his nerves, then picked up the rabbit, nodded to the other warrior, and left.
He trekked carefully around the clearing, making his way up and back upwind as Bonefang suggested, then laid down the prey. It should be enough to catch the fox's attention, but just in case he slit open its side and let fresh blood spill out, releasing fresh scent to the air. There. Satisfied, the bronzed tom retreated to the nearest brush he could find, and crouched down to wait.

"May StarClan go with you," Bonefang said as he watched Rageingspire leave. All he could do now was wait. He couldn't make a move until the fox left the area of the tree. He saw where his clanmate went and saw the tall grass move with the passing of his body. Now the grass was still so he knew Ragingspire must have set the bait and was now waiting just like he was. It seemed like an eternity before the fox lifted his head and looked over toward the place where the dead rabbit was left. Bonefang's muscles ached from remaining in his crouched position. Will the fox ever leave?
Pantherpaw had seen Ragingspire move into position from her vantage point in the tree. Her body was aching too from being in the same position for so long. She wondered what he was doing and almost called out to him but stopped just before she did. She didn't want the fox to know he was there. She realized he must be doing something to rescue her so she decided it was best to see it play out. It was then that the fox raised his head and looked toward the rabbit.
This fox was a suspicious one in nature having had meals stolen from him in the past. But the scent of fresh blood allayed his misgivings (and the hunger pains in his empty stomach helped a lot too.) He slowly rose to his feet and went cautiously toward where the scent was coming from. It wasn't long before he spotted the dead rabbit. He was about to take another step but stopped. Something was wrong! It didn't smell quite right. He shifted his gaze all around the area.
