”Okay.” Sootpaw took her word for it. He wasn’t sure either. He stayed behind, examining the bushes some more, when she caught sight of the rabbit. He looked up just in time to see a red flash. “That must be the fox! After it!” he yowled.

She saw the blur of red cross her path but Pantherpaw's feet stay rooted to the ground until she heard Sootpaw call out. "Yes!" she meowed as she sprang forward willing her feet to run. A strange feeling came over her as she ran. Her legs felt funny, rather wobbly and her heart felt like it could beat right out of her chest. Her breaths came quicker than she could ever remember. What am I doing? she wondered. She didn't know the first thing about battling a fox. Despite how she felt or what she thought, the black she cat kept her paws hitting the ground as she ran after the rabbit. One thing's for certain though, she was glad Sootpaw was with her.
Sootpaw charged after her, skidding around the corner and joining the pursuit. His blue eyes were narrow, focused, and eager. This was what they had come for! He was going to line his nest with the fur from that fox, so the whole clan would know what great hunters they were. Could you eat fox meat? Maybe they could bring it back and the whole clan could feast, knowing that their apprentices had saved them from a dangerous predator. Sootpaw grinned and pushed himself father. "C'mon, I bet we can catch it! HEYYY, FOXFACE!" he yowled ahead.

Emboldened by her clanmate's courage, Pantherpaw started to feel somewhat better. Her legs weren't as funny feeling and her breathing became less forced. Yes! they could do this! she thought. She ran like she never ran before. The ground passed quickly beneath her pounding paws. A hiss of righteous anger slipped from her throat as they chased the fox.
Ahead of them the rabbit reached a small hole and dove inside it and to safety. The fox skidded to a halt banking dirt up against the refuge the elusive rabbit found. It wasn't until then he took notice of the cats following him. Spinning around quickly, the fox faced the cats with loud growls and dripping fangs. He may have lost one dinner but another two were fast approaching him.
His pace slowed as he saw the fox had stopped to face them, his sides moving quickly as he caught his breath. He was only a little winded, but he wanted to be prepared for the fight ahead. He slunk closer, showing his teeth and puffing up his dark gray fur to appear more intimidating and large, though he was beginning to become more conscious about how small he still was. "Hey, foxface, that's our prey your hunting! This is our territory and you better get out before we make you," he hissed. He knew it couldn't understand them, but he thought if he was scary enough, his point would get across.
Sootpaw was only just beginning to take in the challenge they were faced with. The creature was large and fierce, and they were just apprentices. His courage remained with him, but he was more cautious now as they drew close. They had to be very careful with how this fight went.

Pantherpaw stopped abruptly when she saw the fox's dripping fangs. "It wants to attack us!" she said under her breath, surprise clearly heard in her voice. She had been under the impression all foxes were cowards probably because of the phrase of ridicule she had heard growing up. "So and so is such a fox-heart!" This creature before her looked nothing like a coward and even now she was commencing to feel herself like a 'fox-heart'. Seeing Sootpaw showing a brave face in the presence of this scary menace, she tried to do the same. "Yeah! Go away!" she hissed as fiercely as she could muster. "These are our prey!" The fox may be bigger than either one of them but a thought crossed her mind. "There's only one fox but two of us," she told Sootpaw. "We should have the advantage." Was she trying to encourage herself?
"It just thinks it wants a fight, but maybe we can scare it off before it tries to attack," he suggested in a low growl, never taking his eyes off of the fox. He hadn't expected it to flee right away, but he did think if they just showed it they weren't going to back down easily, it would give up. Like she said, they did outnumber it, so surely it wouldn't try to attack the two smaller cats? His tail lashed and he took a half-step closer to it. "What's the plan?" he muttered under his breath. "Yeah. Yeah, there's more of us! Should we attack first?" Sootpaw tried his best to sound confident, but his heart was pounding, and the idea of actually starting the fight was starting to make him nervous.

Pantherpaw felt out of her element. "Um," she meowed, as she crouched down. "Let's try to scare it off like you first said." Meanwhile the fox eyed the two cats and barked three times with a high pitched yipping sound. "I think it does want to fight," her voice sounding nervous even to herself. She flattened her ears back onto her head and narrowed her eyes. "Let's charge it. Maybe it'll back down."
"Okay. We charge it," he agreed. He glanced down at his paws, daring them to be frozen to the ground. He wasn't a coward! He could do this! "This is what warriors do. Get used to this if you want to be one," Sootpaw hissed at himself. A burst of confidence filled him at his words, and he stood straighter. "Let's charge now!" Sootpaw yowled, and dashed toward the fox screaming at the top of his lungs with one of his kitten war cries. "MRRROWW!"

What are we doing? Pantherpaw thought as she heard Sootpaw's yowl, "Let's charge now!" But she willed her feet to move in spite of what she thought. This is something warriors have to do, it's all a part of who they are and what they do. This is why we exist! The black she cat sprang forward hearing her clanmate's battle cry ring in her ears. He's not afraid she reasoned, so she shouldn't be either. But the fact is she was afraid and it was proven by the beating of her heart. She thought it would pound right through her chest.
The fox was astonished at the sight of the two young cats actually lunging toward him but he gave no outward sign of his surprise. Baring his fangs, he crouched low ready to receive their futile attack.

It didn't look like it was going to back down. Fine! They'd fight it if they have to. His adrenaline and confidence were beginning to edge out his fear, especially once he felt Pantherpaw moving at his side. They could handle this! It was two on one, and they were both warriors-in-training. Maybe they'd even be promoted early because they proved they were so strong. Sure, he'd only been an apprentice for a moon, so it would be really early, but maybe he'd get something else special instead.
A part of him knew what to do. His instincts told the dark gray apprentice exactly how to move, took in the fox with a calculating sweep of the eye, and knew how to respond; there was a voice in his head that had done this before, and it knew how to fight. But though he had this feeling inside, this feeling that he knew exactly how to deal with the fox, he couldn't think of any coherent plan, and his paws were deaf to the guiding voice in his head. It had always frustrated Sootpaw: he felt like he knew how to fight, but when it came to actually fighting, he couldn't do it. Fine, then; he didn't need any help, he'd just fight the best way he knew how.
Screaming at the top of his lungs still, Sootpaw launched himself at the predator, leaping for its flanks.

Seeing Sootpaw aim his attack at the fox's flank, Pantherpaw sought to distract the fox with a frontal attack. She recalled her training, what little there was, that when you're team fighting, try to help your partner out by diverting your enemy's attention away from the attack. She had no desire, however, to face the dripping fangs of the fox, so she planned her attack as a feint. She'd dive away from the fox at the last second. That's exactly what she did and it worked! The fox's eyes were fixed on the she cat when all of a sudden it let out a loud screech of pain as he felt the claws of the tom tear into his flank. He spun around and lunged at Sootpaw with a wide open mouth.
Sootpaw felt a rush of satisfaction as his blow landed true and his claws raked through the fox's pelt. Good job, Pantherpaw! We did it! He thought exuberantly. Fighting wasn't so hard after all! Froststar had always told him he needed to work on his defense, not just his offense, but he had been stubbornly against the idea. He preferred to attack, not cower away! His head jerked up at the fox's screech and his eyes widened to see it rush at him. His mouth parted and he yelped in fear, but his paws were froze to the ground in terror of the attacking beast.

Everything was happening so fast! She saw the fox lunge at Sootpaw and then heard him cry out. What should she do? She couldn't think so fast! She had to do something to help her friend and spoil the fox's attack. When the fox had turned to attack Sootpaw, its tail hit her face so she just went with her reactions and bit down hard on the bushy appendage. She bit into something solid and heard the fox screech again. Then what happened next again was so fast she couldn't react. The fox had spun around a second time. The black she cat felt a sharp pain in her own tail and saw it sticking through the fox's mouth. "OWWWWW! HELP ME!" she called out to Sootpaw.
He was paralyzed by fear. He didn't want to watch himself die, but he couldn't move, even to close his eyes, as the fox moved closer and closer. His throat closed up as he waited for the inevitable agony... but then the fox whipped around when it reached him, close enough he caught the reek of its breath, and snapped at Pantherpaw instead. Her cry of pain shook his free of his terrified state and he shook out his coat. With a warbling, terrified growl, he clumsily lunged forward and leaped at the fox's side, digging in his front claws and shredding at its side with his hind claws. "Run, Pantherpaw!"

The fox cried out in pain and rage, dropping his hold on Pantherpaw's tail. Instantly she realized she was free. Upon hearing Sootpaw's command, she turned and ran a few fox lengths then stopped. She couldn't leave a clanmate in danger! When she turned back she saw the fox pull away from Sootpaw and then lunge for him with drooling jaws and long, sharp looking fangs. But because she had run she was too far away to assist him. All she could do was call out a warning. "WATCH OUT!"
Sootpaw felt a wave of relief as Pantherpaw was freed and turned to run. He released his grip on the fox as it yanked itself free and dropped back to his paws. He spun around at her shout and took off at a sprint - a heartbeat too late! The fox's teeth dug into the back of his leg and Sootpaw screamed. He tumbled and fell down the ground, twisting in the fox's grip. He had been almost fast enough to escape, and the fox mostly had a hold of fur; he managed to tear himself free, leaving behind clumps of dark gray fur in the fox's jaws as he limped for safety as quickly as he could.

Pantherpaw had been running back toward the fox and Sootpaw when she saw him break free of the fox. Relief flooded over her and then fear. The fox heard her coming and spun around to face her expecting her to attack again. Much of the fight had left the black she cat and instead her eyes sought a place of sanctuary. At a right angle from the fox and Sootpaw, she spotted a small, scrawny looking tree. Trees were scarce in the rabbit meadow, mostly tall grasses and low bushes so this tree looked to her like a veritable tower of refuge. In a flash, she ran straight for it, the fox chasing after her. When she reached the tree, she leaped as high as she could, her claws digging deep into the wood. As she climbed up the small bole, a terrible thought crossed her mind, can foxes climb trees?! Whether it could or not, the fox chose to stay on the ground and made hideous barking noises at Pantherpaw. Finding a perch, she looked around trying to spot Sootpaw.
Sootpaw scrambled through the grasses, his heart pounding in his ears so loud he thought it was going to explode. He kept low and close to the ground, searching desperately for cover. He could crouch in the bushes, but the fox would still be able to scent him...
He glanced back to see it was circling around the tree his friend was in. He hesitated. This was his chance to make a break for it, run for help... but could he leave Pantherpaw for that long? Would she be okay? He knew he couldn't fight it, that was clear now, and he didn't have time to waste deciding. Sootpaw decided to run for help.
I'll be back, Pantherpaw! Sootpaw ran for the river, his injured leg throbbing with every step. "Help! Is anyone here? Help!" he yowled.

The fox looked over in the direction of Sootpaw but stayed fixed under the refuge Pantherpaw had chosen. The black she cat followed the fox's gaze and saw Sootpaw fleeing toward the river. Her first thought was, 'Don't leave me!', but then she realized her clanmate wasn't running because he was afraid. He must be going for help, she thought. From the little time she had spent with him, she learned that Sootpaw was not a coward. She strained her eyes but couldn't see him any longer because of the tall grasses.
Knowing he had to do something about the fox he had encountered earlier in the rabbit meadow, Bonefang set out again but this time in the company of another warrior instead of an apprentice. He had filled in his clanmate about the details of the encroaching fox. Dread had filled his heart because along the way they spotted the fresh spoor of two apprentices heading in the same direction. "Hopefully they won't cross the stream," he had commented to the cat with him. But when they reached the crossing, it was clear the two young cats had indeed made the crossing.
(If you have a warrior in SummerClan, join in as Bonefang's companion. If you don't I'll bring in another of my cats.)
