Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Adonis frowned as he made his way to headquarters. Someone had told him that Superior Gardenia had wanted to see him. Had he done something wrong? He didn't think so. Perhaps she just had some sort of job for him to do. After a moment he managed to make himself relax as he entered headquarters and looked around for his superior.
The Mercenary Superior sat patiently near the center of HQ, absentmindedly grooming the fluffy, honey-blonde fur on her chest as she waited for her subordinate to arrive. Gardenia glanced up as she noticed Adonis approaching, and dipped her head to him in polite greeting. The Superior didn't like to admit it, but she wasn't as familiar with the Mercenaries she was in charge of as she probably should be. But from what she had heard, this tom had a good record of following orders without question...just what she needed in this case.
"Greetings, soldier. Another rouge tunnel has been discovered close to the Hot Springs. For the safety of the Veterans, Commander Mars has ordered that I investigate it personally. I'd like for you to accompany me, Adonis."
Adonis dipped his head respectfully when he spotted Gardenia and listened to her silently before he nodded. "But of course Superior Gardenia." The thought of a tunnel so close to the hot springs was worrisome indeed. It might be better off to fill it in depending on how close to clan territory it was. He didn't want the veterans to be put in any danger.
Gardenia smiled, pleased, before standing up and taking a moment to stretch her back. Depending on how narrow the tunnel was, she wasn't going to get another chance for a while. "Good," she commented simply, "In that case, I suggest we head out and begin as soon as possible." The Mercenary Superior gave a tilt of her head for Adonis to follow her, before padding across the HQ towards a far tunnel that served as the fastest route to the Hot Springs. For the most part, the walk there was silent, with her catching the tom close behind in the corners of her vision. Perhaps this was an opportunity to start reaching out more to her dependents.
"Tell me, Adonis, under which Commander were you born?"
(So all I knew that was this guy was around the same age as Mars so I literally went back to the old site and went through RR's page edits until I found one where Mars and his siblings were tykes so I could answer this question cx. Fun fact, their birthday is August 8th They turn 4 this year)
Adonis followed Gardenia towards the Hot Springs. He was content to remain silent until she asked him a question. He smiled. "Commander Anatoly." He shook his head. "That question makes me feel old you know. There are so many young soldiers now it's hard to believe how far the Regime has come since then."
(oh woooooow, that takes me back. Well, Gardenia is 2 so at least it's not too problematic XD)
Gardenia turned to stare over her shoulder at Adonis, blinking in surprise. It actually took her a moment to recall where Commander Anatoly was in the Regime history, from what she remembered of the Raisers' history lessons when she was a tyke. "So you're around Commander Mars' age, then?" It was less of a question than a verification of her knowledge. History...really wasn't her strongsuit. "Heh, tell me about it. I was born under Commander Fjord, but I already feel old compared to the Tykes and Cadets who haven't known anything except Mars." The way conversation flowed so effortlessly, it was a pleasant feeling. She wondered if all of the Mercenaries were as secretly socible as Adonis was. It would definitely make her job easier.
"Close. I believe Ren was commander when Mars and his siblings were born, but it was close to the end of his reign." At the mention of her feeling old, he had to laugh. "You feel old? I've lost count of how many commanders I've been through so how do you think I feel?" There was an amused twinkle in his eyes as he spoke. "I prefer to say I've grown wiser though. I don't feel old at least." He was a good natured tom and generally easy to get along with. Adonis was just one of those cats that didn't really have any enemies that he knew of and he tried to get along with most everyone. Gardenia seemed like a decent enough commander so it was nice to actually get the chance to speak with her for a bit.
Gardenia snorted in amusement. "You only get to say that because the Commanders between Anatoly and Sean didn't last very long, or so I've heard from my Grandmother." Veteran Eclipse was probably older than the two of them combined, born during the middle of Commander Largo's reign. At least that meant she had a lot of stories to tell when the Mercenary Superior visited. Speaking of which...
The pair turned the corner out of the tunnel into Post Delta, or more commonly known as the Hot Springs. Her golden eyes scanned the Post briefly, before locking on a slender, ragged black she-cat making her way over to them. Gardenia smiled lovingly as she touched noses with Eclipse. "Greetings, Grandmother. Would you mind showing us where the new tunnel is?"
The Veteran nodded, purring. "Not at all, my dear. It isn't far. You and Adonis can follow me."
"Fair enough." He followed her over to Veteran Eclipse, dipping his head politely to the veteran when they came up to her. "It's amazing how much we are discovering about these tunnels. It seems like there is a new discovery every day." Adonis was actually enjoying the process of learning more about their home. After leaving the old tunnels behind, he believed this was what the Regime needed to really make this place feel like home.
Veteran Eclipse hummed in agreement as she led them past the hot springs, where several other Veterans were currently relaxing. The elderly she-cat would never admit it to anyone, but she was happiest about the springs' discovery the most; especially considering that in the old tunnels, Veterans were made to live next to where the Regime buried their dead. She'd take warmth and relaxation over ghosts and graves any day. "It's odd how so many of them are only being uncovered recently," she pointed out as they turned a corner into another tunnel.
"Perhaps," Superior Gardenia suggested, "The structural support of the tunnels have been weakened after such a harsh Leafbare? And now that all of the snow is melting and the weather is warmer, the blocked entrances just can't hold up any longer." Being a Mercenary, it was a requirement to have some knowledge of building and supporting tunnels, since they were in charge of keeping them safe and usable. But even still, it was difficult to say what exactly was causing the openings; there was an equal chance that she could be absolutely correct, or far off the mark.
"It is odd, but at least these openings don't seem to be affecting the structure of the tunnels too much." The last thing he wanted was to live through another tunnel collapse. They had worked so hard to make a home here and he would hate to see all of that taken away again. "Either way, I do enjoy the tunnel patrols. We always seem to find something new every time we are sent out." Of course there were those that said they should leave well enough alone, but the more they knew about these tunnels, the better in his opinion.
Veteran Eclipse let out a snort of amusement. "Better you spry young ones than me," she countered, her pace slowing down as they reached a sudden opening in the side of the tunnel, one that hadn't existed there previously. Rocks and rubble were scattered around the tunnel's entrance, though most of it had been brushed to the side already and the opening cleared up; probably by the group of soldiers who initially discovered it. "Well, here it is," she meowed, looking it over. "Please be careful in there. It's doesn't look too unstable from here, but only the Blind Protector knows what could be further in."
Gardenia nodded, her eyes bright with determination. "I understand," she replied, her tone gravely serious. "We'll take as much precaution as we need to. If we reach a drop or a split, we won't push our luck; we'll go back and request for a larger patrol." Her gaze relaxed a bit and she smiled softly, leaning down to give Eclipse a lick on the ear. "Don't worry, grandmother. We'll be fine."
She turned to Adonis. "Alright, then. Ready to go? I'll be heading in first, if you don't mind."
Adonis nodded, agreeing with Gardenia. "There is hardly ever anything hiding in these tunnels, but we will be careful." He then turned towards his superior. "I don't mind at all." He was hoping that this tunnel might lead further into the tunnels that the regime had been discovering here lately. He was honestly curious since it was becoming very evident that there was more to their tunnels than they had originally thought.
