Part I - THE BEGINNING It started out small and relatively harmless. Nobody quite knows where the sickness came from or why it came. It is unlike anything to clan has ever seen for instead of plaguing their bodies, this sickness is of the mind. It starts with small, unsettling dreams, and then grew. Cats often find themselves unable to stay awake, falling into deep and terrifying slumbers. These slumbers are filled with a mix of reality and terror and many cats do not even realize they have fallen asleep. Few warriors are not affected by this terrible sickness but those who are are often scared of moving from their dens in case they fall asleep outside in Summerclan territory.
In this thread, the first cat to suddenly pass out and experience a nightmare will do so in the middle of camp, sending cats into a state of worry and fear. Most cats from here on out will be affected. You can sign up to be part of the patrol, post a single post here about a crazy terrifying dream your cat/s is having, or simply role play your cats' reactions. It is up to you but replies are encouraged! This is affecting the entire clan in all current rps made from here until the conclusion of the plot.
Ravenstar exited the leader's den with her black tail high in the air behind her. It was a rather chilly morning, but she was expecting new leaf to begin soon as she had been able to hear the drip drop of ice melting and burrow creatures growing increasingly more restless. She padded over to the fresh-kill pile in hopes for some leftovers before taking Mudpaw out hunting today. Even as leader, she preferred to be out hunting and patrolling with her clanmates when possible. She chose a rather small and pathetic looking rabbit, chewing it slowly and enjoying her food as the clan awoke around her, bustling with good mornings and cats ready to start the day. The dawn patrol should be returning soon, she would wait for their report before heading out.
"What a fine morning," she purred to a nearby cat, grey eyes warm and a smile on her face as was typical. She was still the patient and friendly cat she had always been.

Frostmouse had decided to stretch her legs that morning and wandered away from her kits in the Nursery. It was a habit she was just beginning to start now that they were able to go do their own thing for a while without her having to constantly watch them. Sun shimmered against her white and grey fur and, despite the chill, she felt warm under it's light. Ah, it was a nice morning to be out and about. She squinted her eyes and caught sight of a mouse in the fresh-kill pile. Oh yeah, that prize was hers for sure. As she began to make her way towards the plump treat, a sudden feeling of drowsiness washed over her and the ground began to sway underneath her feet until everything went black.
That was when the chaos started.
An acrid smell hung thick in the air, choking the breath out of her lungs. A smog surrounded her, keeping her from seeing the rest of the camp. Out of nowhere, the wails and cries of her kits split the air and alarm crashed over her like a wave. "Smudgekit?!" She cried as she heard her baby's scream. "Patchkit, Spottedkit, Speckledkit, Dapplekit!" One by one, their screams of agony pierced through her head. They were being attacked! A creature with gaping, bloodied jaws loomed through the darkness towards her and she gasped with horror as the bodies of her kits began to fall from it's mouth.
Frostmouse's scream filled the air as she awoke from the nightmare. "My kits! It ate my kits!" She cried, the sobs ripping through her chest.

Ravenstar was startled by the sudden scream that ripped through the air from the nursery and the jet black she-cat hurdled towards the entrance to spot frostmouse in her nest, sobbing and crying as if someone had attacked her or hurt her or her kits. What in Starclan was going on in here? Eaten her kits? Ravenstar wasn't entirely sure what any of that meant, but she did know this queen was filled with pure terror. She swept up besides the young mother "Ssh sh sh it's alright, it's alright you're okay." She whispered to the queen, looking to see all of her kits cowering in fear nearby. They were all accounted for so what was happening. "It's alright, Frostmouse. You're here and all of your kits are safe." She reassured her.

While sorting herbs in the back of his den, Graythorn heard the loud shriek. Instantly he was on his feet and went to his den's entrance and looked out. He saw Ravenstar slip inside the nursery and his concern grew. Did a queen wake up to find one of her kits had died in the night? he wondered as he quickly crossed the camp. When he arrived he heard the leader's gentle comforting words to Frostmouse. "What's wrong?" he asked, still fearing the worst.

"THAT THING." She screeched, looking with wide, frightened eyes to one of the queen's nest. "It killed them! My kits! They're gone!" Frostmouse fought to control the pure terror that crashed through her system. She could feel Ravenstar and Graythorn's presence, yet reality was still in the process of returning to the usually joking feline.
Patchkit sat with her siblings, trembling in fear as her mother continued to sob and scream. "What's wrong with her?" She cried.

With a confused look on his face, Graythorn answered the hysterical queen. "There's no one here except Ravenstar, your kits, and myself. And look," he pointed to the nest of frightened kits, "they're all here and alive. You must have had a bad dream. Rest in your nest and I'll go get you some thyme to calm your nerves."

Ravenstar froze at the queen's words and her gaze followed Frostmouse's to the empty nest. What could she possibly be looking at? Ravenstar wasn't sure but she pressed her flank close to her and continued to whisper softly. "There is nothing there, my dear. Patchkit, come closer. Let your mother see that you are okay." She whispered to one of the kits, hoping that maybe seeing them living and breathing would help soothe her before Graythorn returned.

It wasn't long before Graythorn returned carrying a couple leaves of thyme in his mouth. He set the herb down in front of Frostmouse. "I'm back, now eat these and you'll feel better." He looked at Ravenstar, a little irritated at being awakened by something as trivial as a bad dream. "Hopefully this'll relax her enough," he said with a sigh. "I'm up now so I might as well get busy with my herb stores. Which reminds me, I'm going to going to the herb meadow today to see if anything survived through last Leafbare. I for one am glad to see that season is over."

"Take a warrior with you, the other clans have been rather active recently and I'm sure you could use a little help." Ravenstone offered. She wished she could say she was comfortable letting the medicine cat roam alone near any of their borders but she honestly couldn't these days. They currently had an alliance with Springclan but it wasn't the most solid of alliances either.

Patchkit stepped forward hesitantly, shaking like a leaf from nose to tail-tip. "I'm right hear, mama." She meowed weakly, searching Frostmouse's eyes.
Confusion passed over the queen's eyes and she shook her head. "What is happening? Is this a dream? Is she a ghost?" Her questions were frantic and terrified as she searched the gazes of Ravenstar and the others around the Nursery.

"Very well," Graythorn grumbled, wishing now he hadn't mentioned his trip. He enjoyed going to the meadow alone but now he had to take someone with him. He left the nursery and slipped inside his own den.
Sundapple met Graythorn outside the den, blue eyes still wide from the commotion. "I heard you need an escort. Mind if I tag along? I'll try and stay out of your way." She reassured him.

Ravenstar looked at the queen once again and she began grooming the queen gently more for comfort than anything else. "We will figure it out. I promise. What is important though is that you are safe and your kits are safe." She whispered gently, unsure of what to do. For now, she would keep an eye on the queen and the rest of the clan to be sure of what was going on and if they needed to take any further steps.
Pebblefur leaped out of the den in a hurry, her eyes wide in surprise. She had been jolted awake in sudden panic at the shrieks coming from the nursery. Her first thought was that they were being attacked. When she entered the clearing outside the den, she saw everything peaceful besides the worried glances the other cats were making toward the nursery. What was happening? She saw Graythorn rush into the medicine den and then returning with a mouthful of herbs. She padded over, more calmly now that there was no real danger. She could hear Ravenstar soothing one of the troubled queens. When Graythorn left the den again, Sundapple met him asking if they would go collect herbs together. She remembered Graythorn saving her life once and she would forever be in his debt. Unfortunately, Sundapple had beaten her to asking to accompany him. Though she did want to know what happened, curiosity getting the best of her. She approached Graythorn, a look of worry on her pretty dappled face. "What happened?" the calico she-cat asked, pardoning herself as she interrupted their conversation.

She [Pebblefur] approached Graythorn, a look of worry on her pretty dappled face. "What happened?" the calico she-cat asked, pardoning herself as she interrupted their conversation.
"Sure," Graythorn sighed, still upset he had to have an escort. But then it wasn't all that bad. Sundapple could help him carry herbs back to the camp thus saving him extra trips. "We'll leave shortly." As he was about to enter his den, he heard Pebblefur speak. The fur raised slightly on the back of his neck in proportion to his irritation. "A queen had a nightmare, is all," he replied, attempting to hide his grumpiness. He tried to still his waving tail. Why does every cat have to know stuff? he wondered.
Sundapple nodded. "I'm ready when you are." she informed him before sitting and trying to erase the evidence of her unease with a few licks to her ruffled fur.

Graythorn turned and entered his den. Once inside he located a small hollow branch that was wrapped tightly at both ends with a vine. The same vine stretched loosely across the top forming a handle of sorts. The gray tabby picked up the hollow branch by the vine. The branch itself was about a cat tail's length long and bumped against his chest as he walked. "If you don't have anything else better to do," he spoke to Pebblefur through the vine after he reemerged from his den, "You can join Sundapple and me to the wildflower meadow."
She knew she had irritated him slightly and it made her feel bad. She hadnt meant to upset him. Perhaps she should just leave him be. Though as soon as she turned to leave, he asked her to join him and Sundapple. Suddenly her feelings revived and her ears perked in interest. "Sure! Ill be honored to help!" She turned back around and waited for Graythorn to lead the way.

Frostmouse shook her head, not understanding what was going on. She started to notice Patchkit and the other kits standing there and gave a little whimper. "I'm so glad you are alive. That beast was terrifying."
Cloudyday watched from afar, clearly worried about his mate and kits. "Ravenstar, is there anything I can do?" He finally asked, awkwardly stepping inside the den. To be honest, he had been having a few nightmares also, but they weren't near as bad as this.

Graythorn led the two she cats out of the camp. He was relieved he had the excuse of carrying the branch so he would have to talk to them much. It was bad enough he had to run all the way to the wildflower meadow just so he had plenty calming herbs on hand. Nightmares indeed! He had better things to do than this. As he walked, he recited in his head the medicines good for this sort of thing. Thyme, of course. And there was also chamomile, poppy seeds, and juniper berries. Fox dung! There won't be any berries yet this season. The other three had better be enough.
