Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
It wasn't even winter yet, and Splashfoam already couldn't stand the cold.
The brisk wind ruffled his fur, the cold seeping into his skin and making him frown. For months now, he'd felt unsettled, but hadn't known why; the signs of the approaching leafbare seemed to him like some kind of omen. Perhaps he was just lonely, he thought as he laid eyes on a bird that was perched high in SpringClan's eternal cherry blossom tree, infamous for staying in full bloom even during the harshest of winters. He studied the pattern of the blossoms, squinting to see the higher-up ones - was it just him, or did the once-vibrant tree seem duller?
"Are you hoping that bird will fly into your claws if you stare at it long enough?" Spottedfox asked in a flat tone. She was known for her sharp tongue, sarcastic nature, and coldness, all very odd traits for one who lived in a Clan that exuded friendliness.
Splashfoam huffed, turning to glance at Spottedfox now that he'd been startled out of his daydream. "I don't see you making any moves to catch it, either," he muttered, rolling his eyes. "Can't a guy just stare up all-depressed-like at a cherry tree without being harassed about it?" He wasn't usually a rude guy - that was Spottedfox's job, after all - but her sudden comments had startled him, and he was too embarrassed to admit so.
Spottedfox half smirked at Splashfoam's sharp retort, most of her Clanmates just countered her attitude with more friendliness and it annoyed her deeply. "Nah, it's too high up to be worth the effort." she stated with a flick of her tail. Splashfoam's comment about staring at the tree depressed-like sparked the dark natured she-cat's interest though. "And why are you staring at a cherry tree all depressed-like?" she asked, it was odd to her to even think that one of her so cheerful Clanmates was possibly sad.
"Why not stare at the cherry-tree all depressed-like?" Splashfoam replied, with a somewhat dark smile. "Maybe this is just a hobby of mine. Maybe I do this for fun." He left that statement hanging awkwardly in the air for a few seconds, before chuckling and shaking his head.
"...Something about the coming leafbare just feels odd to me. I dunno what it is, it's just like a....continuous sense of doom, or something. But maybe I'm just getting old." This was less like a suggestion and more like a joke; Splashfoam had been one of the kits that had been promoted early under Tarantulastar's reign, and due to this had always been a few good moons younger than the rest of his peers. It was only now that he was beginning to look an age where he could say he'd been a warrior for a few moons, and people wouldn't look too shocked.
Spottedfox stared at Splashfoam quizzically for a few moments before smirking and rolling her eyes. "You don't like leaf-bare do you?" she asked. Spottedfox loved the snow and cold weather. "Leaf-bare is always a fun season, you don't find snow fun?" she asked, half sarcastically.
"I hate snow," Splashfoam answered, almost immediately. "What's the big deal, really? It's just cold sand, and everyone hates sand. People are so inconsistent, you know?"
"Actually I viewed it more as frozen water but I guess cold sand works too." she replied slowly, taking note that he did have a point about the sand. "I hate sand too, I hate having to groom it out of my fur!"
"Thank you," Splashfoam growled, visibly feeling validated at Spottedfox's reply. "Everyone else in this Clan seems to love sand. 'Splashfoam, what about the sandcastles? Splashfoam, what about the way it feels under your paws? Splashfoam, you're named after the beach!' It's always the same thing from them," he muttered.
"...In small quantities, yeah," Splashfoam mused. "...Yeah, small quantities are fine. Ponds, though. Lakes even. I hate those too. Too easy to drown in, don't you think?"
Splashfoam made a face. "Teach me, then," he said, looking vaguely afraid at the mention of swimming. "I can't swim at all. Blissrose pushed me into the lake by the SummerClan border once and I almost drowned, and that water barely came up to my belly..."
"Let's go then!" Spottedfox responded, marching off in the direction of the small pond that was located deep into the forest, it was her favorite spot and on top of that it was small which was best for learning to swim.
Splashfoam blinked. For some reason, he hadn't quite processed that he'd have to get in the water at some point to learn, and that point in time seemed to be approaching much more quickly than he was comfortable with. "Uh...have you ever taught someone how to swim before?" he asked, gulping nervously. He was beginning to feel like he was an apprentice again.
"I taught myself... and I might have attempted to teach my kits at some point or another..." she responded, still marching on in the direction of the pond, deciding to leave out the fact that she actually pushed her kits into the pond and forced them to learn how to swim, it had been the way she was taught and it was the way she decided to teach her kits. "Don't worry, I didn't let them drown and I won't let you drown either." She added with a slightly amused tone.
Splashfoam frowned. "...You know, that sounds like something that someone who would let me drown would say," he murmured, though his anxieties had been somewhat quelled. "It's cool that you taught yourself, though. Maybe SpringClan as a whole needs swimming lessons..."
"That's not a bad idea," Spottedfox replied thoughtfully. "Although, I'm pretty sure that the whole of SpringClan doesn't want me teaching them how to swim," she added in amusement. "As I'm sure you noticed, I'm not particularly anyone's favorite cat among the Clan."
Splashfoam shrugged. "Maybe so, but you know the time when you'll definitely be likeable? When they're drowning, and you're the only cat who can swim out and save them."
