Phobia slipped from the tunnels and out to the surface, taking a deep breath of the cold air that bit at her pelt and stung her eyes when the winter winds kicked up. Her pelt was thick though and she was made of sterner stuff, not daunted by weather. Scoffing at the first flurries of snow that were draining from the sky, daring them to get bolder and try to drive her back into the tunnels. While small she was compact and set her shoulders as she started trudging forward. Wanting to spend time out and about exploring and refusing to turn back before she even started.
"Are you heading out?" Basil was just returning with Raiser Jasmine. While he stopped, his sister slipped back into the tunnels. "It's a bit chilly today so you're not going to want to stay out long." He glanced up at the sky. At least the sky was clear so even if it was a bit chilly, the sun would keep them warm for a little bit.

"You don't know what I will or won't want." Was her snarky response, as she raised a brow towards him, as if daring him to argue with her. Before she shook her head, realizing she didn't have time for her normal antics. Not if she wanted to get all the way to the borders and back before dark, not if she wanted enough time to explore. "Nevermind, sorry that was rude." She called over her shoulder before she set off once more, being rude once again.
Irritation flashed in Basil's eyes as he charged after the she cat. "Now hold on just a moment! Just where do you think you are going?" Sure she had apologized, but that did nothing to sooth the young tom's irritation and besides, it was hardly safe for a half trained cadet to be charging around without even paying attention to their surroundings. That was one of the most basic skills both scout and mercenary cadets learned when they were took to the surface. He would have to catch up to her and he would be sure to remind her when he did.

The setting sun didn't help Phobia keep an eye on her surroundings, in fact she blundered through the undergrowth without a care. More intent on reaching the border than anything else, paws blindly walking where perhaps they shouldn't. Cutting a trail towards suspiciously untraveled territory as if mercenary's and scouts had been avoiding it. To blind to notice such a thing her focus never strayed until she found her steps touching nothing, and then she was tumbling. Down, and into true dark, for a moment thinking she had fallen into an old tunnel entrance. Until the deep resonance of a growl echoed through the space. A panicked mind realized she had fallen into a badgers den, before she was sent scrambled by the sound of movement. Her flashing eyes caught sight of the twilight sky and she struggled to escape towards it. One paw was on the surface when she felt sharp jaws clamp on her tail and was releasing a panicked yowl. Other paw flashing out as she struggled to pull away, feeling tendons and fur tearing as the badger refused to let go. Adrenaline drove her forward, helped her ignore the sharp sudden pain and lack of weight, pure shock and panic driving her forward and stopping her from questioning how she had escaped it's grip.
Of course she kept going. It wasn't like she was a cadet that was supposed to listen to him or anything of that nature. Basil was grumbling to himself as he followed after her. Once he caught up, she was going to get an earful. He would see to that, but he also had no interest in wearing himself out by running after her. He would catch up eventually and the time in between would be spent planning her lecture. Well, that had been the plan anyway until he heard her panicked screech. Basil took off, running through the forest at full speed, searching for Cadet Phobia. He came up on her pulling her way out of the badger's den and quickly moved to put himself between the den and the panicked cadet. "That's why I told you not to run off!" He glanced over his shoulder at her, hoping she at least had the sense to stay put this time. He didn't fancy fighting a badger on his own though so he was sort of hoping that it would stay in its den.

"We need to run, lets run!" Phobia babbled, barley paying him any attention, just enough to spare a feeling of gratefulness as him placing himself between her and the badger. Her now stump of a tail was dripping blood and still had dangling bits of flesh that hadn't ripped off clean. Luckily the cadet hadn't seen it yet or she might have fainted right there. Instead adrenaline had her turning and bolting back towards a cusp of trees, scurrying up one and onto a branch that still retained some foliage despite the winter. She was almost positive badgers couldn't climb, and was panicked that Basil hadn't followed her.
After a moment, Basil turned around. He was reluctant to turn his back on the den when Phobia had just been attacked, but now he had to get her out of the tree and back to the tunnels so that one of the guiders could have a look at what was left of her tail. He would also have to report to Mars about the badger so a group of mercenaries could be put together to drive the creature away. Honestly, the sight of the cadet's tail was enough to make his stomach churn. How was he even supposed to deal with it? Should he go up into the tree and get her? What if she didn't come down? Should he carry her down and even then if she struggled they were both going to fall. Basil was a fairly young mercenary so tense situations were not his area of expertise. Finally he made himself look up into the tree. "Phobia come on! We need to make it back to the tunnels! This area isn't safe with the badger around."

Wide eyes turned back towards the den she had run from, but the badger showed no signs of chasing her out. Were they nocturnal? Was it content it had driven her off? Was it not hungry and didn't find chasing her worth it. While staring at the den her eyes then saw the blood strains in the dirt and her mind flashed back towards the badgers crushing grip on her tail. The tail that no loner had any pain. Her heart seemed to slow as her sluggish mind started piecing things together. Holding her breath she turned to look behind her, trying to swing her tail and seeing nothing, craning more she almost became sick at the sight of her ripped and shredded tail. Feeling faint she wobbled on the branch, claws digging in at the last moment to keep her plummeting from it. "Ba-b-Basil." She hiccuped as she stared at her wound, afraid to look away.
The young mercenary's eyes widened. "Don't move! I'll come and get you." He started climbing the tree with his eyes locked on the cadet. He needed to get her back to the garden before she lost too much blood. He wasn't sure if there was any saving her tail though. He would leave that up to the guiders. His progress up the tree was slower than he would like, but he did make it up to her branch eventually. "Do you think you can make it down?" His voice was gruff, but gentleness wasn't exactly what he was known for. It was amazing that he even managed to hide his acute annoyance with the she cat actually. Had she listened to him she wouldn't be in this situation. He was at least aware that voicing his annoyance was uncalled for though. She had suffered enough and there was no telling what was to come for her. He saw no point in causing her any further distress. He wasn't sure he could carry her down honestly, but if she was too nervous, he would have to try to get her down. This was one of those times he was very thankful he had inherited his father's larger frame. Balancing would be difficult, but he should at least be strong enough to help her out of the tree.
"I- I can get down. You go first though." She stuttered as she shook upon her branch, claws dug so deep she wasn't sure she'd be able to pull them free. But now that Basil was up in the tree with her she felt the calm from shock washing over here. Realizing the mercenary was right, they needed to get back to the tunnels. She didn't dare glance back towards her tail again but she knew a guider or the chaman would need to help her.
Basil nodded. "Just take it slow and put one paw in front of the other." He was worried, but he knew better than to show his own unease with the situation. It might cause her to panic and he wasn't sure if he'd be able to reign her in. His descent was slow and every so often he would glance over his shoulder to make sure that Phobia was alright. As time went on, he was calming down himself and his mind was set on protecting his injured comrade and getting her back to the tunnels safely no matter what. "Are you alright? We can rest when we get out of the tree if you would like."

"I don't want to rest here, we're to close." Her teeth were chattering, though she wasn't cold, small spasms wracking her frame. Her eyes flitted over in the direction of the badgers den, as if the animal would come lumbering out any moment. They refused to go any further though and look towards her tail. "Lets just head back. I want to go back." She urged and started hurrying forward like a starving man seeing their first meal.
"Hey wait!" Basil hurried after her, making sure he caught up with her this time. "You need to stay with me. You're injured." While his tone was still gruff, it was not aggressive. It was in the young tom's nature to protect others. It was one of the reasons he had became a mercenary in the first place. The last thing he wanted was for something else to happen on their way back. It was highly unlikely, but it wasn't a risk he was willing to take. "Just stay with me and I'll make sure nothing else happens until we get back alright? No more running ahead."

Cadet Phobia let out a series of hurried nods, teeth still chattering and refusing to speak. She was amazed she managed to feel a form of embarrassment in her shock. Despite her burning desire to return to the tunnels she also felt an urge to get away from Basil. The tom who had seen her foolishness. She was a mercenary cadet and instead of acting with any sort of bravery she fled like a true coward. Perhaps she wasn't meant to be a mercenary cadet? To be above ground. Perhaps she was meant to stay within the tunnels, as perhaps a raiser or a guider.
Basil just shook his head, but he didn't press her any further. Instead, he focused on getting her back to the tunnels without any further injury. He would have to report to the commander and tell him what happened and hope that he didn't get in trouble for this one as well. First, he was going to make sure that Phobia was tended to though. That was the most important thing no matter what might happen to him afterwards. Come on. The tunnels are close now."

"Am I going to be in trouble?" She stuttered slowly, turning nervous eyes towards the tom. The question seemingly came out of nowhere, Phobia hadn't had it in mind when she decided to speak. Had just wanted to make an affirming noise but instead she was now getting anxious. She wanted to be back in the tunnels, but she also didn't want anyone to see her. To realize what a failure as a mercenary cadet she truly was. But the shock was wearing off and pain was setting in, wracking her steps to stutters and causing her to grit her teeth.
"No. You won't be in trouble." Basil was confident about that. He knew his father well enough to know that he wouldn't punish an injured cadet. What had happened would be punishment enough. "Come on. The tunnel is right here." He was already slipping into the tunnel as he spoke. He would see her to the garden before he went to report what happened to the commander. He wanted to be sure that a Guider was seeing to Cadet Phobia before he left her. After a moment, although he wouldn't look down at her, Basil let his fur brush Phobia's as they walked. He wasn't usually one to try to comfort someone, but she just looked so scared. He couldn't just leave things as they were.

She slipped into the tunnel, taking deep breaths and feeling steadied by the toms comforting motion. She could do this, she could get through this. She.. just the thought of ever leaving the tunnels again had her insides shriveling up. So different from the fresh cadet that had told Lark all about how she was going to constantly be exploring above ground. How much she loved the dynamic nature of it compared to the tunnels. Not to mention how much she feared looking up as they moved through the tunnels, were the others looking at her with judgement?
Perhaps the Blind Protector had orchestrated this second meeting, as Raiser Superior Lark emerged into the tunnel they were in currently. The small calico had a significantly more rounded stomach than before, with a medium sized litter on the way, but her eyes still held the friendly gaze they always did. "Phobia!" She greeted warmly, moving towards the younger cat. When she noticed the mingled scent of blood and fear she paused, blinking rapidly, before rushing to Basil and Phobia. "What's going on? Are you okay? Oh- oh, Phobia! Your tail!" It wasn't the brightest comment, but the Raiser was dumbfounded by the whole situation.
