Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
The leggy dark red tom paced near the camp entrance nervously. His life in the recent moons had been turned upside down, not only his but all of SpringClan's had and he truthfully didn't and still wasn't handling it very well. Lightstep had told him she needed to speak to him, so here he was now, pacing nervously. He was sure by the end of the day there would be a path worn near the camp entrance, just from his pacing alone. His green gaze scanned the camp, constantly searching for Lightstep.
Lightstep had suspected while they'd still been under SunClan control when her belly had started to feel bigger. But the fear of any possible kits being taken had forced her to try and act like nothing had changed. But now, with them finally back in their camp, back home. She'd gone to Fawnheart and the medicine cat had confirmed it. Had confirmed that she was going to have kits. Cardinalheart's kits.
They'd been off and on again mates, but when they'd been in SunClan, with death seemingly likely, especially for Cardinalheart given he was the deputy. Lightstep had decided they should be together. They both loved each other, and really it was her who'd needed to commit. So she had. And as a result the future would hopefully be bright.
There were murmurings that Peachstar was going to go into a self imposed exile. But even though Lightstep would be sad to see him go, Cardinalheart would make a fine leader, he'd inspire their kits for sure if he became their leader. She could picture the kits asking him questions and pretending to imitate their father.
It was a bright image, and it filled Lightstep with hope as she returned to camp. She'd wanted to take a walk to figure out how to tell him, and now seeing him pace around she padded up to him.
"Cardinalheart! I just finished speaking with Fawnheart, I'm expecting kits! Our kits!" She said eyes bright.
Cardinalheart stopped pacing, his eyes widening in shock for several seconds before excitement took over. "Really?" he asked in an excited whisper.
Then he remembered. Eternalera, no Eternalstar now was leader.. not him... he'd refused to take the position, he wasn't ready. But now he had to tell Lightstep that. His gaze darkened. "Let's go for a walk." he said, slipping out of the camp and into the forest. The last thing he was going to do was tell her in camp, where there were prying ears all over.
What kind of example would this set for their kits? He hoped that one day Lightstep would understand and so would the kits and he hoped he wasn't making a mistake in his decision.
Lightstep felt elated at the excitement in his gaze, and she'd moved to brush her muzzle against his, stopping and pulling back as he said they needed to take a walk. She saw his gaze was dark, the elation and excitement gone and replaced by something... ominous.
Was there something amiss? Something terrible he needed to tell her about that could overshadow their expecting kits?
"A walk is fine," She agreed and walked alongside him, treading lightly still despite the weight of the growing kits in her belly. When they were a ways away from camp heading into the flower fields she turned to him. "Is there something amiss? I've been hearing rumors that Peachstar is planning to exile himself, are they true?" She asked. "If it is, while it is saddening, it won't be the end of everything. We'll still be okay." She said nudging him with her muzzle. "You'd make a fine leader, you have plenty of cats ready to support you!" She added assuming that perhaps he was just a little worried about being leader.
Cardinalheart stopped and sighed, trying to think of a good way to break the news, but truthfully, he didn't have one. "Yes, Peachstar is exiling himself, but it will be Eternalera, not me who takes leadership of SpringClan." he said. "I do not feel that I am ready to be leader and to take over would be doing SpringClan a disservice." he said quietly.
Lightstep looked at him with an appalled and incredulous expression. She let out a scoff, "You're-you're joking right? Cardinalheart the deputy always succeeds the leader, it's in the code!" The gray she cat cried taking a step away from him. "Eternalera has been away why would you go to her?!" She asked bristling.
Cardinalheart stared wide eyed at Lighstep. She was right. What had he done? It was too late to back out now, what's done was done. "I don't know! I didn't know what else to do!" he responded.
