Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Elmwhisker sat in the medicine den sorting through herbs. He was piling up all the bad ones that had dried out or rotted and were no longer of any value, while making a mental list of what they needed to collect from the forest today to restock their herbs. Once he knew what he needed for his storage he went to fetch Beaconpaw. He padded out into the center of the camp. "Beaconpaw?" he called out to the white she-cat, who'd just recently been named as his apprentice.
*I had been awake for a while. I had eaten my breakfast, played with the kits, and was just checking on the Elder's to see if they needed anything. At the calling of my name from Elmswhisper, I excused myself politely and ran to see what Elmwhisker needed or wanted. "Yes, Elmwhisker?" *I asked as I stopped in front of my mentor.*
"Are you ready to begin your first official day of training?" he asked her excitedly. He was originally both excited and nervous about taking on an apprentice, it was a big responsibility, and he hoped he could live up to the task of training the next generation of Medicine cats.
"Excellent!" Elmwhisker replied, heading towards the camp entrance. "Today we will be searching for catmint, comfrey, and horsetail, we need those stocks replenished. Do you know what comfrey and horsetail are used for?" he asked.
"Very good!" Elmwhisker praised Beaconpaw. "And we are heading to the stream, a lot of herbs grow really well around there, especially the catmint." he answered. He could hear the faint sound of the stream in the distance, he knew they were getting close. "But afterwards I was going to give you a tour of the entire territory."
Elmwhisker could smell the catmint before he could see it. His expertly trained nose was able to easily pick up and distinguish the scent of almost all the herbs in his current surroundings without even seeing them. "Do you know what catmint smells like?" he asked Beaconpaw. "One day you will be able to pick apart the scent of all the herbs without seeing them." he added.
Elmwhisker nodded in response and trotted over to the catmint plant. "Catmint is the easiest herb to learn, it has grayish green leaves and purple flowers." he meowed, beginning to gently pluck a few of the catmint plants.
Beaconpaw followed him to the plant and sat down, bending her head forward to look at the plant closely. "It's not that pretty, I guess the scent makes up for it looks," She replied as she started to pluck some as well.
Elmwhisker nodded in agreement, silently plucking a few more plants before deciding they'd collected enough. "The comfrey tends to grow a little farther into the woods, it likes grassy, damp areas. We chew the root and make it into a poultice." he said as he collected his catmint and began slowly heading towards where the comfrey grew.
Beaconpaw nodded her head and picked up her pile of the leaves and followed her mentor towards the comfrey. "We use that for broken bones? Right?" She mumbled through the leaves.
Elmwhisker nodded in response to Beaconpaw. He found a covered spot under some bushes and stashed his pile of catmint there and beckoned for Beaconpaw to do the same while they collected the comfrey. "It's also used for soothing wounds and can be used on stiff joints." he added, those were some lesser known uses of comfrey but would nevertheless come in handy for the young apprentice.
Beaconpaw followed her mentor under the bush and placed her herbs down next to his. "Ok. " She nodded her head and stored the information within her head for future reference if she ever had the need to help someone.
(sorry I lost this thread in the chaos that is my life and my thread list lol )
"We don't need too much of the comfrey, thankfully we aren't healing broken bones all that often." he said with slight amusement as he plucked a stalk of comfrey from the ground.
