Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
To those that had known his grandfather, it was hard not to make comparisons between Lionkit and Goldenstar. Both cats were massive, Lionkit already standing a head above almost all the other kits in the clan. His thick build and silver fur an almost exact match, but what really made them seem so alike was their eyes. The golden eyes that he shared with his grandfather and mother. Eyes that would one day hold the strength to halt those around him with a glance.
However, that is where the similarities ended. His grandfather had never smiled after the death of his one true love, and Lionkit never stopped smiling. Goldenstar had been cold and ruthless, Lionkit was compassionate and sensetive. He cared about the lives around him, even the lives other cats found insignifigant.
The young kit had found a baby mouse, and had tucked away hidden within the den that he shared with mother, sibling, and Foxstar. While most kits would have killed it, he had taken pity on the little creature that couldn't care for itself and had been caring for it in secret for over a moon. He brought it food, and distracted other cats that came close to finding the little creature. It wasn't that he didn't understand that they had to kill to survive, but he couldn't bring himself to kill a creature to young to put up a fight. It wasn't right. "I'll protect you" he whispered, poking a small berry into the tiny hole that he had hidden the little mouse inside after making sure that no one else was in the den.
"Hello Lionkit," Skipstep meowed coming up behind his son carrying a small squirrel in his jaws. He hadn't had much luck, but considering it was his first day back out hunting after being so ill from his failed attempt at swimming through the cold water after Glowstar he felt it was decent. "What are you up to?" He asked whiskers twitching after he set down the squirrel. "Storing away some berries for safe keeping? You made sure to not steal from your mother and Foxstar's stores right?" He asked tone shifting to somewhat stern, he didn't want Lionkit to accidentally eat something that could hurt him after all.
"Yes daddy" he laughed nervously, shifting his weight to block the hole from his father's view. He knew what would happen if someone found the mouse, and he was kicking himself for making such a mistake. He had thought everyone would be gone for awhile.
"One of the warriors gave it to me to eat, but I'm full. If Fernkit finds it, she will eat it before I even get the chance to taste it" He didn't like lying, and he could feel the guilt eating away at him. He also wasn't very good at it, his face and nervous shuffling of his paws betraying him. The only reason he was even trying to lie, was to save the life that had come to depend on his protection.
Skipstep nodded slowly, "Which warrior gave it to you? I want to make sure it won't give you a bellyache is all Lionkit," He said then he saw the unhappiness in his sons face... well it wasn't like Lionkit was eating it now "Or... you know what, show me it before you eat it." He said waving his tail. "Okay? I won't make you fish it back out now that you've put it away. Just remember, before you eat it show it to me. While some berries might look tasty they're actually very bad for you." He warned.
His eyes widened in panic as Skipstep spoke, not realizing the berries could be harmful. What if he had killed the mouse by trying to help it? What if he gave it a belly ache? It wasn't like he could bring it to his mother or Foxstar and ask them to heal it. The would just kill it,and doubted they would think twice about it.
He glanced backwards towards the hole, and then at Skipstep. He lowered his gaze, his ears lowering as he spoke "Dad.. I think I need to tell you something... But it's a secret. You have to promise not to tell anyone"
He finally looked up with a little more resolve "even mom and Fernkit. They can't know about this" he added firmly.
Skipstep blinked and his ears pricked forwards, he set aside the squirrel he'd caught and crouched down low to get closer to Lionkit's level. "You know you can tell me anything, and I'll keep it a secret... as long as it's not something that'll hurt your mother or your sister." He added. "So what is it?" He asked glancing towards the hole.
Reassured by his father's kind words, he stepped aside and got down on his belly. He reached his paw inside pulling out the berry first and setting it to the side. Then he put his paw back inside and gently pulled out the small helpless mouse. It was old enough to eat solid foods, but was so tiny that it wouldn't even stand a chance of making it out of this camp of warriors alive. It was the same size as his paw, an it squeaked in protest jumping off squeezing itself back into the safety of the hole. "It's mom is gone, so I have been taking care of it"
The way he treated the mouse with such gentleness and the way his eyes lit up when it made it's apperance showed how much this little secret really meant to him. "If anyone finds it, they will kill it dad. I know we have to eat, but it is just a baby... please don't hurt him. His name is Squeak"
Skipstep looked surprised when his son produced the tiny mouse barely the size of the young kits paw. And while Lionkit was large for his age that mouse would not be much of a meal.
"IT's hardly big enough for a good meal anyways," Skipstep said, then realized that might not be particularly comforting he softened his voice. "That's a very good thing you're doing Lionkit, and it's good to help this little one survive. While we do need to eat we also have to take care we do not overhunt our lands." He said. "This little mouse would not even fill your belly or your sisters by much I imagine. It's better you let him grow, and then release him when he's stronger. That way he can help increase the number of mice. By him going out and increasing the number of mice, we have more mice for us to eat later on." He said. He didn't know if he'd explained it well enough for Lionkit to understand, but he kept his voice and eyes gentle as he reached out to pat Lionkit on the head. "You're doing a very good thing Lionkit," he assured his son again.
Instead of the scolding that he had been expecting, he flinched as he received a pat on the head. He looked upwards, his ears slowly coming forward. He hadn't expected his father to be so accepting of his little pet, much less say that he was doing the right thing. He puffed out his chest as he was praised, though he didn't really understand his father's reasons for approving of this.
"Will you help me? I just want Squeak to be ok. I don't want to feed him a posion berry! He is so little and cute, he can't find food on his own... I have been sneaking him what I have been able to find, that mom had a lot of and wouldn't miss" while he had just admitted to stealing herbs, at least it was all with good intentions.
Skipstep heaved a sigh, "All right, I will help you. Probably best so you don't take anything your mother needs.. or that is poisonous." He added. He mulled itover, he knew mice liked to eat seeds and the like. "There also might be something that squeak can eat that isn't in your mother's herbs, and that would be best for your mother and the mouse."
He brightened up, the last thing he had been expecting was his father offering to help him take care of squeak. He nodded his head up and down vigerously, though her still kept his voice quiet to avoid attracting attention "What sort of things?" he tilted his head to the side deep in thought.
He tried to think about what the mouse would eat. Obviously it didn't eat the same things the cats were eating. He couldn't imagine the littel fluffy creature would take to meat very well, nor would it eat the flowers. Would it? "flowers?"
"Well, seeds usually, we do use poppy seeds, but I imagine there are other seeds that uh, squeak might be inclined to eat." Skipstep mused. "Seeds that we don't need. Though with it being leafbare those might be hard to find. We could gather several plants and see if Squeak takes to them," Skipstep suggested. "And whatever seed we can find."
"Can I come with you to gather them?" he questioned hopefully. Unlike many other clan, SunClan didn't strictly confine their kits to camp. However, he and his sister were a special case. With Leatherstarable to lead a raid at any moment, there was always someone watching the two with careful eyes.
He could still remember that scary group of cats that came, and how terrified he had been. It had convinced the young cat to obey his parent's commands, unlike his slightly more outgoing and rebellious sister.
Skipstep let out a hmm, "Well... as long as you stay close to me, we won't go far then and see what we can find then." Though he imagined they'd have to head towards where the janus cultivated the herbs to grow by the hot springs season long and that was a bit of a trip.
At the prospect of finally getting to leave camp he began to bounce around "I promise to stay close" he looked at Skipstep with a nod. He always kept his promises, at least he tried to. He hadn't been out of camp since the battle, and he wan't going to ruin it now.
