The cold was an old friend, embracing Shallowpaw in it's hold as he slipped from the apprentice den. Paw pads becoming numb to the cold by he slipped from the camp and out into the unforgiving winter winds that blew a dusting of loose snow over the frozen mounds of white. The moon caused the frozen snow crystals to sparkle as he walked along and the light caught them just right. The scene was one taken from a fairytale, and it was one Shallowpaw couldn't appreciate in the moment. So caught up in his own head that the outside world fell into the background. Time seemed to be slipping from him faster than he could make use of it. Leaving him panicked and anxious about what he was doing with his life, what he was going to do with his life. Bringing to surface the fleeting feeling to run, to move, to do something.

She had watched him leave the camp. His stirring in the nest next to her made her awaken to the reality she had been trying to hide from. She hadn't told him yet. They were so close to their Thane ceremonies and she was keeping a secret from her best friend. Yawning to ease her stress she rose from her paws and gave her back a much needed stretch. Cagedpaw hurried after Shallowpaw. Her heart fluttering as she ducked out of the den. The clear sky allowed the moon to shine down on her multicolored tortoiseshell pelt. Its presence cold but comforting. She kicked up her paws as she took some speed and caught up to Shallowpaw. "Hey wait for me!"
Sometimes his thus far lifelong friends constant presence at his side seemed more grating than comforting. His desire to shield her from his self-doubts causing them to fester within him and grow to cut into him even deeper. But he would never even dream of pushing her away, the thought of telling her he needed space an appalling thought to him. Her selfless nature and care for him feeling like something he didn't deserve. So much so that he was scared of her realizing that fact and leaving him behind. Maybe that was dooming him, but regardless he was doing his best to hold it together. Making big plans for himself, plans that he hoped with burying his own problems, make him worth her.
"It's late, you should be sleeping." He hummed as he came to a stop and turned dark eyes towards her. Continuing in a softer tone, "I didn't mean to wake you."

She gave him a soft purr of reassurance. "You didn't wake me." she lied closing her eyes as she tried to stifle a small yawn. "I thought perhaps it would be a nice night for a walk and you just so happened to get up when I was thinking to take such a walk." she meowed. She looked at him with a little look of worry. "You seem stressed Shallowpaw. Is it your thane ceremony?"
He knew she was lying. He knew she was lying and he didn't confront her about it. Did it speak of less of him for not telling her to take care of herself rather than always focusing on him? Either way he said nothing and let his mind turn to her question. "Do you ever think you're not good enough? That you haven't done enough?" He wondered aloud and then continued on. Knowing she would only prompt him to continue if he let her answer. "I'm going to be a thane soon and I feel like there is still so much to do. So much to accomplish. I don't want to stop at just being a simple warrior, I want to be more."

"What more could there be? Chieftain?" She giggled softly. For a second not thinking that maybe that was exactly what he was aiming for. To aim higher than any cat in the clan. To succeed and be made great. She paused in her thinking. If he wanted to be chieftain would he forget about her? Or the secret she kept close to her heart. She wanted to wait to tell him but now... would he even want them?
"Maybe." His tone seriously to contract her giggle. "Who knows even? I know I want to go higher though. And I want to keep going and going, I want to be remembered." His tone dropped to almost a whisper before he made eye contact with her and a soft smile. "I want us to be remembered." Shallowpaw wondered though, wondered if they would last until he achieved the greatness he so desperately wanted to stride towards. Everyone was always telling that that young love was almost always doomed to fail.

Her heart sank. Right now he wanted them, us. But if he knew she was sure he would not choose her. "What about a family? Do you want a family?" she asked suddenly giving nothing away.
