The bright morning sun shone down on four cats standing in the training hollow. One cat, a dark gray and black tom who was larger than the other three, looked up briefly into the azure blue sky and sent a quick prayer to StarClan. He thanked them for not letting his first two apprentices kill each other. This was the first morning after the most recent ceremonies and a new apprentice has joined their group. Hopefully neither Sunrisepaw or Monsterpaw have a problem with Peonypaw.
"Good morning Peonypaw, and welcome," Ravenmask meowed. "So glad you were assigned to our group." Then he turned his attention to the two older apprentices. "Today I'd like you to show Peonypaw the first basic battle techniques I taught you. That way you can review while teaching our new arrival. Now pay close attention," he added to Peonypaw. "I'll have you try them out when they're finished."
Sunrisepaw did have a problem with Peonypaw, more than he would ever know, mostly because when she was training with Ravenmask, she tried to be on her best behavior. It was better that way, really. So, even though she still wanted to gouge out Foxstar's eye for his cruelty, she was going to pretend - at least when she was being loud enough for her mentor to hear.
"It's going to be so much fun to have you on the team," she meowed, and her voice was only ever so slightly sarcastic. Even if Peonypaw wasn't annoying - and she was - it was going to be annoying to have to start from phase one of training again.
She turned to Monsterpaw, her head tipped ever so slightly to the side. "Would you like offense or defense first?" goldcrest
Monsterpaw was less than welcoming towards the new arrival, fixing her with spiteful, leering glares that matched the ones he usually gave Sunrisepaw. He wasn't too fond of her, and he made no effort to hide his disdain, even though it was much less deserved than his hatred for Sunrisepaw — even Monsterpaw wasn't quite sure why, exactly, he didn't like her. Perhaps he didn't like the thought of somehow being weighed down in training, or perhaps it was something more petty. At least him and Peonypaw had a common ground: neither of them liked Sunrisepaw.
It's going to be so much fun to have you on the team. He resisted the urge to groan out loud, settling for an over-the-top roll of the eyes instead. Surprisingly, he was diligent when he payed attention to Ravenmask — his need to succeed, to prove himself, much stronger than his regular dislike of most authority (and, he wouldn't admit it, but Ravenmask was quite nice, patient, someone calming, and he almost, almost, felt bad to be so disruptive towards him in particular).
He looked at Sunrisepaw. "Offense. Duh." He stepped away, backing a little more into the hollow to ready his ground. His pelt rippled with a sense of excitement at being able to show off, even though he totally, one-hundred percent, didn't care what Sunrisepaw or Peonypaw even thought.
"Good morning, Ravenmask," Peonypaw greeted in the perfect, generous voice of a princess, giving him a smile that rivalled Sunrisepaw's deference but for one thing — it looked so much more effortless. So much more real. Like being nice was far less an effort for her than it was for the older apprentice. It was breezy and light and passing, like a Mediterranean summer's day, and she ignored Sunrisepaw as she said it, her tranquil, pretty blue eyes focused on their mentor. If she had learned anything from Doefreckle, it was how to be sweet; he'd given her a little coaching before she set out that morning, sitting behind her as he took old flowers from her fur to give her freer movement during training — the trick, he'd said, though she'd thought Shadedsun might not have approved, is to be submissive, but not a push-over, unless they WANT that. Chances are, though, they'll find that off-putting and then they won't respect you, and we WANT you to be respected — it takes a certain kind of person to actually like a suck-up. Be pleasant, be confidently at ease, be... He'd turned her around and smiled down at her. Be regal. They'll love you. He'd taken on more of the gossiping older friend role now that she was an apprentice. "I'm so excited to get started — you're one of the greatest warriors in the Clan and it'll be such an honour to learn from you." Smiling, she turned away; as soon as she did, her eyes found Sunrisepaw's and she gave her a look, the breezy smile still in place even as her eyes took on a Peonypaw — 1 defiant arrogance. Two could play at Sunrisepaw's game, and Peonypaw didn't often lose. If Sunrisepaw wanted to be the favourite, Peonypaw would take it from her.

Peonypaw returned the smile, though her nose and face scrunched up slightly so it looked more like a sickly sweet, insincere sneer, shoulders bunching up around her cheeks and head tilting slightly. "You, too," she cooed back. She met Monsterpaw's leers with an indifferent flick of her eyes towards him; her gaze passed over his eyes, and then it looked away, like he didn't frighten her at all and certainly didn't warrant a greeting. When Sunrisepaw turned her attention to Monsterpaw, Peonypaw scoffed lightly and rolled her eyes, careful to keep her head turned slightly so Ravenmask couldn't see. She was already showing off. As the two older apprentices readied themselves to boast in front of her, she stood and wandered over to sit beside Ravenmask, glancing up at him with a brief, attentive smile. "Which one has the most merit, do you think, Ravenmask? Offense or defense? What I mean is, in a battle, should you try to take the initiative before your opponent can, or wait until you're in the best position you can be in and let them come to you?" It was clear she'd read ahead in the metaphorical textbook. She wasn't the only one who could show off — gracefully, unassumingly, without the posturing swagger of Sunrisepaw. She didn't need to be the violent princess; she could be the one slipping on glasses and opening her notebook expectantly, ready to study and learn.

Ravenmask was pleased at Sunrisepaw's remarks but he felt she didn't really mean what she said by observing her demeanor. Well at least the words were said, he thought. That's a start.
But it wasn't hard to decipher Monsterpaw's attitude. He wore his on his sleeve, that is if cats wore sleeves. He glanced at Peonypaw to see if she showed any signs of hostility toward him but he couldn't tell. He knew this whole situation needed careful watching.
"I'm so excited to get started — you're one of the greatest warriors in the Clan and it'll be such an honour to learn from you." The black and gray tom was flattered at first by Peonypaw's statement but then he wondered if she was just sucking up. However, he decided to reply positively. "Thank you for thinking so," he said. "I hope I can prove to be a good mentor for you."
"What I mean is, in a battle, should you try to take the initiative before your opponent can, or wait until you're in the best position you can be in and let them come to you?" "I can tell you've already been preparing for your training. Doefreckle must have told you a lot. In answer to your question, it depends on several different things. Each situation in battle is different. But as a general rule for myself, if I see an opening I take it. If not I wait until one presents itself."
Then turning his attention back to the older apprentices, he meowed, "Okay, begin when you're ready."
