Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Adderstar had not intended to linger within the clan for long; she had only been staying with SwiftClan for a half moon when everything went up in smoke and before she could fully understand what series of accidents had occurred, she was the leader of the clan. Unbelievable.
She had no idea what she was going to do now, but she knew how to do one thing: start the basic work required to look after her little sister. And all of her little sister's many new apprentice friends. Adderstar had been sleeping in the apprentice's den since she arrived in the clan - first because Otterpaw refused to be alone, then because she was keeping watch over the little group while the warriors were away. The idea of moving away from them was strange and compelling at the same time, but she knew her sister wasn't ready to be alone yet.
Thus, today's first task: find enough moss - or whatever these cats used as bedding - to build them a more comfortable nest. With that goal in mind, Adderstar slipped out of the camp and stood just outside the entrance, debating which way to go.
"Do you need... help?" Meadoweyes hadn't been sure how she was going to speak to a sudden new leader. It was odd, being medicine cat under a new leader.. who hardly any cat knew. It was.. a situation for sure. Her violet eyes seemed inviting and curious, however. "I don't mind to help." She added lightly.
Adderstar blinked at the medicine cat, her face hard to read - she did not look surprised, but almost uncomfortable. After so many days spent with the younger cats, it was an adjustment to remember how to speak to the older ones again, especially a cat as important as Meadoweyes.
“Please,” she agreed, a friendly smile tugging over her face now and she added, “I have no idea where to begin, honestly.”
Meadoweyes gave her another kind smile before moving to stand beside the feline. She motioned with her tail for the leader to follow. "That's fair, you were thrown into a lot of this all at once. I can't imagine how overwhelming this must feel. Though, StarClan does things for a reason. Just have faith, they chose you. That must mean something."
"I'm doing my best to get through it," she agreed, though her ears twitched back as she spoke, betraying her slight discomfort with Meadoweyes' statement. Adderstar wasn't so sure that StarClan had chosen her; she wasn't even sure they were real. She had already taken a leader's name without yet completing the journey to receive her lives.
The warriors had not been with the clan when she became leader. Breezestep had led them out on patrol to speak of serious matters, and Heavystar left while they were gone; left alone as the only adult with the apprentices, they had quickly elevated her to leader. By the time the patrol of warriors had returned - sans one deputy, who had disappeared like mist - Adderstar had awkwardly explained that she was "chosen" and the clan had accepted a higher power was responsible. She wasn't convinced, but who was she to argue with them?
As they began to move out of camp, Meadowyes began to speak once Adderstar was finished. "I believe that it is time I take you to meet StarClan soon." She responded,"So that you may receive your lives. All leaders get them." She explained. Meadoweyes waved her tail lightly before continuing,"Usually a leader gets them the next night.. it seems though that our situation was a bit different. As you have.. already taken on the name. No worries." She smiled reassuringly. "We can simply go soon. Perhaps..." a pause. "Tonight?"
Adderstar frowned. "So soon? There's so much else to do." Her tail twitched as they continued on, and after several seconds, she simply shook her head. "I don't mean to disrespect your clan customs, but I have work to do here. I can't be running off to go get extra lives when the prey pile is empty and we have so few warriors around to keep an eye on the younger cats."
Meadoweyes stopped walking, turning to face the younger cat. Her tone was serious, and her violet eyes bore into the cat before her. "This is not some silly custom, this is what keeps the clan going." She shook her head. "What if you are seriously injured while you are out hunting? What if me or Straybullet cannot get to you right away to treat you, and you die? What if you get sick and the herbs are not effective in treating you, and you die? Or what if you get hit by a twoleg monster?" She shook her head again. "This is not a game. The lives are there so that the leader we have can continue to lead for as long as possible, to serve the clan and to guide us in the best of ways."
Adderstar glared back into her eyes, feeling defensive. She knew she was making the right choice by waiting. The clan needed her right now. As Meadoweyes continued, however, Adderstar's ire dwindled. If I die, another will take my place, she wanted to insist, but like a flame flickering in the wind, her doubts became pervasive. Was it true? She had only ended up leader by coincidence, but it was true that there were not many other suitable cats in this clan waiting to take up the mantle. With time they would grow in number, but for now....
"Then what do you suggest I do with the clan?" she asked, her voice soft, but with a dangerous edge. Tread carefully or risk getting cut. "While we're gone, getting out lives - do we leave Straybullet to guide them?"
"Yes." She responded instantly, absolutely no hesitation in her voice. "Medicine cats are more than you think we are. We are the advisor to the leader, especially when there is no deputy currently there. Straybullet can more than handle the clan while we are gone for half a day. Put faith in us, because the clan needs us to work as a team." She advised carefully, but her tone was not meant to make Adderstar feel incapable. Rather, meant to help instill trust between her and her fellow medicine cat.
Adderstar had yet to meet Straybullet, other than a greeting tossed across the camp in the early morning. She did not fully trust the tom, but she had no reason to doubt him either. If Meadoweyes trusted him, that would have to be enough.
She thought hard for any other piercing questions to ask, but the truth was simple: Adderstar did not know enough to guess at the right questions to ask. Her tail flicked again. "Where do we go to speak with StarClan?" she said at last.
"It's a bit far. We just have to follow the water flow." She responded once more. "Though we don't have to pass through another clan's territory, thankfully. If we did, however, they would have to let us pass peacefully."
Adderstar frowned. “A long day’s travel, then. With catching to stop prey and likely rest… two days? Three?” She couldn’t picture how far the water ran, when it felt as ceaseless as the skies themselves.
Adderstar's expression creased in annoyance. "You expect me to walk away from my clan during their time of need, without food or herb, and travel half a day each way? Forget it."
