There was a serenity to watching the fiery orb rise over the vast expanse of the open sea, a serenity that Vera E'tani had never known before. The Isle was truly a paradise, and she was satisfied with the territory for the time being. However, even she felt the restlessness that came from the neverending peace. She turned her head slightly, watching the sunrise in silence.
"I always find sunrise to be the most invigorating time of day." Solaris had approached from a few feet to the right, and now spoke in his distinctive rumbling tones. He had debated whether or not to disturb the Nemesis, but had ultimately decided to do so- respectfully of course. When the bengal she-cat had turned to him, he dipped his substantial ginger head in deference. "I apologize if I'm disturbing you." His voice was carefully cordial, his amber eyes as unreadable as ever.

"Your company is welcome today," Vera responded, hardly sparing him a glance. The Nemesis had a lot on her mind, but today, distractions would be welcome. She had decided that it was high time to invest her interest back in the grass-roots of the league, and that meant interaction with everyone. They were not beneath her; she was their leader, their shepherd, their beacon; but they were her followers, her sheep, and her fuel. Without them, she wasn't much.
"I've come to appreciate the sunrise much more than I ever did before," she agreed, finally glancing at him, "it's Solaris, right?"
Solaris nodded his affirmation, moving slightly to seat himself a few feet from Vera. The sand beneath his feet didn't yet hold the heat of the day, and the waves were serene, surging instead of crashing. "I'm honored you remember me." Solaris wasn't entirely unknown in the League- he had an impressive fighting record and a certain respect, but he didn't expect the Nemesis to recognize him.
"I appreciate the sun as well here. Maybe one day I'll come to appreciate the water as well, but that doesn't come as naturally. I usually come to train on the sand in the morning- the resistance makes the drills more effective, I find."

"Is that so?" Vera questioned, a hint of genuine curiosity lacing her tone. With one paw, she tentatively pushed her right forepaw forward, noting the resistance of the terrain. With an exhale of surprise, she gave a nod of approval. "So it is," she answered herself in a low voice, her tail thumping against the sand.
"Perhaps there are even more hidden benefits to the Isle than I previously thought," she turned towards him, refocusing her attention on Solaris. She watched him with a quiet intensity, the kind of unnerving emphasis that could only originate from personalized contact with a Nemesis. "What would you say of the benefit in using the beach as a training hub?"
Solaris met her gaze evenly, his half-ear twitching back as he thought about her proposition. "I would say the benefit is substantial," he responded after a moment. "The terrain makes for harder training. Meaning if the trainees can master the moves on the loose sand, they can perform them with greater intensity and speed on sturdier ground. The initial frustration will lead to an essential improvement, in my opinion."
The tom was the first to break eye contact- he'd be lying if he didn't admit that Vera have a strong presence. He glanced back to the sandy expanse, picturing the scene he had described. "While I hate to share my secrets, if it helps the League, I'd be willing to open up my training grounds." He stated wryly, cracking a half smile.

"How about you go one step further," the Nemesis prompted, her gaze unwavering, even as Solaris glanced away. "As you know, I'm without a Warden, and I have no proxies at the moment. I can't oversee all training on top of everything else. You seem to have some things figured out," Vera continued, tilting her head slightly.
"How would you feel about taking on the role of Proxy, and assuming the responsibility of overseeing training?"
Solaris’ smile faltered, uncertain if his hearing was failing him. “You flatter me, Vera E’tani.” He met her gaze once more, eyes reflective, remaining quiet for a beat while he thought. “I won’t put on a false display of humility. I’m sure you’d see through it. I appreciate the offer and the recognition and I accept. I am honored to work for the good of the Regime, as I always have.” He dipped his head in something close to a bow, offering another half smile as he did so.

"I see value in you," Vera E'tani responded with a curt nod, her tone businesslike and clipped. Such was the nature of the Nemesis; her offer hadn't really been a question. It was a choiceless decision for Solaris to make -- what was he to do, refuse his Nemesis? The notion was laughable. Nonetheless, Vera was genuine in her intentions: Solaris did carry worth, and she needed his help. Not that such a statement would ever grace the external world.
"I have high faith that you won't disappoint me, but I've been wrong before," she continued, and this time, it was Vera's turn to break eye contact, looking back out over the horizon.
Solaris blinked again, still not quite believing the encounter. He turned to look at the horizon as well, letting a silence settle for a moment. In a group as powerful and ambitious as Primal Instinct, rising to the rank of Proxy was an honor indeed.
"Where would you like me to begin?" He asked, not sure where his boundaries lie.

"Start by whipping mentors into shape," Vera responded, her claws unsheathing slightly, "when we return to our territory, I anticipate the other clans viewing us as vulnerable. Letting them believe that is one thing, but then actually allowing that to be the truth is something that simply won't happen. When we return, we will return with conviction. We will show no cracks in our walls. One of the keys to doing that, obviously, is having the best trained hunters on the front lines, and that will stem from how well you manage the mentors now."
"Duly noted." He nodded, pressing his broad paws into the silky sand as the warmth of the sun seemed to grow. He would have to adapt his own strategies to be able to verbalize them to younger cats, but it could be done. "How long do you anticipate us staying here? Just for a time estimate and training plan."

"Until newleaf," Vera answered, her chartreuse gaze locked on the evermoving waters before her, "or until we are ready. Whichever comes first, really, but I anticipate that the seasons will change many times over before the league is mentally prepared to make that journey again. Nevertheless, I will periodically send scouts back home to see if the prey is healthy again, beginning in a moon or so."
"The journey was hard," Solaris acknowledged. "But the League is resilient. Coming here was good for us, even if some cats protested it. I'm sure you will make the call to return at the moment when we need it." A salty breeze drifted in from the sea, and Solaris closed his eyes for a moment. "The prey is plentiful here, which should make for healthy sized trainees. How long has it been since you've trained someone? I cannot imagine you having had time for it in the last few years."
