Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
This time of year, all of the afternoons in SummerClan were hot, boiling really. Over his years in the clan, the tom had adjusted somewhat, but the large orange creature couldn't deny that he would have liked it to be just a little cooler. It was partially due to his size; he was a large tom, furry in all senses of the word, and the extra body mass absorbed the heat like it was nothing. He wasn't one to complain, though, at least not really. Regardless of the temperature, he still had things to do. Every SummerClan cat did; each had their own part to ensure that things were going smoothly.
One of his tasks that morning had been going and collecting a few herbs for his daughter. Sunveins had been so busy lately, and she and Cypresspaw had more than earned their morning off. Plus, with his own apprentices off on a patrol with another cat, it wasn't like Howlingheart had particularly pressing things to do. Plus, having something to occupy himself was good: Howlingheart didn't like idle time, especially now. Too much had gone on recently, especially since the end of the Summer Festival. Having spare time meant that he would worry, and he didn't want to spend all of his time fretting.
He was near the border gathering some marigold when he heard the noise. His ears instantly pricked; he knew that sound. A kitten. Concern flecked his gaze, before he dropped the flowers where they laid (he could always gather them later). Right now, he needed to focus on that noise...
He started moving quickly to the source, his strides long. "Hello?" the older tom called, his gaze slicing across the horizon. Finally, his eyes settled on the origin of the noise, a small white creature. The tom bounded in that direction a few more strides, before slowing down as to not run up to the kitten and scare it. "Hello, there. Who are you?" he asked, his tone gentle.
[ do not feel like you have to match length at all ! this is just my first rp post after being gone for two weeks c: i'll match your length from here on c: Athesia )
It was very hot. Her mother said she would be right back but it had been hours. Daytime had come now and the sun was hot on her white fur. She hadn't moves since her mother had left with her other siblings. "Momma!" She cried again. She was very hungry as kits can be. Maybe something had happened. She sniffled and cried out again. "Mommy!!"
She heard a male voice and jumped. She curled up and tried to be as small as possible. She tried to cover up a sniffle as hid. But what she didn't know was she was in very short grass and not anywhere near cover. She wouldn't have been able to see that even if her eyes were open. She didn't know there was something different about her yet. All she knew right now was that she was Hot, Hungry and scared. And there was an unknown Tom nearby. What if he tried to hurt her.
When she heard him come up through the grass she jumped and let out a hiss. "I dont know you. Mommy said not to talk to strange cats...." She mews. He sounded nice enough but mother didn't trust anyone, why should she.
His heart went out to the little thing. If he was hot, he was sure she was too, and she looked scared. He did his best to make himself look as non-intimidating as possible (he was one of the kindest cats in SummerClan, but he was large), offering her a soft smile. There was a soft sadness that ached in his chest as he looked at her; he'd seen this before, a young kitten left to their own devices. In SummerClan, this was particularly dangerous. Not only was it hot, hot enough that a kitten could die of exposure and heat stroke, but there were also predators. A white kitten would be particularly easy for a hawk to find, and Howlingheart wouldn't let that happen, even if he had to just sit out here with her until her mother returned. If she returned. SummerClan was known to be a safe haven for orphans, and more often than not, the kittens left within the borders without their parents were often left in SummerClan for good.
"My name is Howlingheart," he explained to her. "You're in SummerClan territory, which is my home. There is a group of cats who live here with me." His voice was gentle as he provided her the information. "When cats come into our territory, it is our job to check it out. I promise that I won't hurt you, though. No one here will." If they did, they'd hear from him personally, which also meant hearing from his son-in-law, Foxstar. "We just want to make sure that you're alright. It's in our code that we help kittens who need help." And even if it wasn't in the formal warrior code, the tom would have helped her anyways, and cats would have just had to get over it. Howlingheart settled into a seated position, his gaze never leaving the kitten. "How long has your mama been gone?"
She turned herself so she was facing the tom, based on where his voice was coming from anyway. She sniffed the air, Her mother had been gone a long time. She soaked in the information she was given and sniffled again. "Momma left with my brother before it was hot." And boy was it hot. She didn't know how long she had been here but he was the first cat she had met outside her mother and siblings.
"Momma isn't coming back is she?" She cried softly. She was the last of her siblings to open her eyes and Howlingheart was the first cat to see they were light blue. She didn't know her eyes were open because nothing changed for her. She didn't know that she had probably been found by the best cat in this new territory to take care of her.
is face dropped into a frown as he glanced up at the sky. "You've been alone a long time," he murmured. It was the middle of the afternoon- it had been hours by now that this kitten had been left alone. And she had a brother? Howlingheart's heart went out to her immediately. She reminded him of Sunveins; although Bermondsey had left her directly in the tom's care, she too had been separated and abandoned.
Now having a better idea of how long she'd been out there, the tom couldn't help but go back to his former medicine cat mode. He immediately stood, walking slowly in a circle around her. As he walked, his gaze inspected her as quickly as possible: she looked hungry, hot and perhaps tired, but she otherwise looked as okay as she could for her position. Once he got back to her front side, he found himself looking into her eyes.
Her eyes. An alarm bell went off in his head; he knew what often came with the pairing of white fur and blue eyes. The concern in his own gaze deepened, before the kitten began to cry. Instinctively, he pressed his tail on her shoulder. "Oh, sweetie," he meowed, "it'll be okay." His voice was gentle and comforting. He couldn't imagine what the little thing was going through upon her realization. "She might be back, we don't know yet. But, either way, she's left you in good paws. Why don't we get you back to somewhere where it's a little cooler? I can get one of my friends to come out here and watch to see if she comes back tonight, and you and I can make sure you're safe and fed. We can set you up in my daughter's den, and then we'll get you some lunch. If your mama comes back, she'll know where to pick you up, and if she doesn't, then you can live with us. You'll find that we are very kind and welcoming. Our leader, Foxstar, would never turn away a cat in need, and the cats that make their home in SummerClan come from a whole variety of different backgrounds. We even have some kittens that you can be friends with! Does that sound like a plan?"
She sniffled once again and nodded at him. She was very hungry and getting out of the hot sounded really nice. She sniffed at his tail but didn't look at him directly. "Momma will know where to find me? You Promise?" She asks.
She tried to get on her feet but she was still very wobbly. She wasn't very good on her feet yet. "Momma called me Icekit..." she tells him, as she tumbles slightly to the side. She tries to rub her face and nose to clear it, but she couldn't stop crying. "she told me she would be back soon. She couldn't carry me anymore."
"Yes, I promise. I'll make sure that someone will keep an eye out for her, cross my heart." Once again, he noticed that her gaze wasn't quite fixed on him. Now, he was almost certain his suspicion was correct. When she said her name, he then nodded. "Well, Icekit, that's a very pretty name. I think it suits you well."
When she stumbled, he couldn't help but move closer to her, pressing his side into her's to stabilize her. "Careful, now. Are you sure you're alright to walk? I could carry you if you need me to. It isn't very far from camp; we'd get there in no time." This wasn't exactly true, it would take them a little bit of time to get back from where they were, but Howlingheart didn't mind. He was strong enough and she was small enough that he was more than willing to help her, especially if that prevented her from getting further hurt.
She shook her head. "My paws dont like to stay under me. Momma said I was going to get the hang of it eventually..." She mews. She leans back into his side, grateful for the support. She didn't remember when her mother had last fed her. She had been traveling a few nights and it had been a while sense her mother could hunt.
She blinks some and lays back down, her paws splayed in front of her. "How far do we have to go?" She asks curious. She didn't smell any cats nearby besides him. then again she was only a smol and her senses hadn't grown that well yet. in a few weeks she would be much better. That's what she told herself at least.
He nodded at her thoughtfully. "Why, yes, that sometimes happens when a kitten is as small as you," he meowed with a flick of his ear. "But, the bigger you get, the stronger you'll grow! I knew a kitten that was even tinier than you, and he grew up to be the SummerClan leader!" He felt a hint of relief when she let herself press into him; he'd certainly met a kitten or two that certainly wasn't happy to have assistance, and he was glad this wasn't the case for her.
"It shouldn't be too long, now. Up we go," he then meowed, before lifting her in the air by her scruff. He hummed along as they walked, the smell of other cats growing stronger and stronger. When they approached the camp, he set her down gently. "Here we are!" he meowed cheerily. "SummerClan headquarters. If you want, I can carry you into the den, too, I just didn't want to embarass you if you didn't want your grand entrance to be swinging from my jaws," he then meowed with a chuckle.
She sniffed the air as she was set down. "That's a lot of cats..." She says both with wonder and fear in her tiny voice. She had never smelled so many cats ever in her whole life. She took a deep breath and puffed out her chest a little to seem braver than she actually was. "I can try to walk walk in all by myself. I might die of embarrassment if I trip though." She says in her best brave voice.
She sniffs the ground to find where most cats had traveled before her. There were so many scents! She followed her nose and stumbled a little bit at first but found her footing as she crawled her way into the camp.
He nodded. "We're not as big as we once were, but there's a healthy group of us here," he meowed with a smile. When she murmured about being embarassed, Howlingheart couldn't help but chuckle slightly. "I won't let you fall," he promised, his voice warm. As if to prove that to her, Howlingheart let his tail rest on her shoulder, guiding her gently where she should be going. "Just this way, it isn't far."
They were about half way to the Medicine Den when another cat padded up, a look of curiosity in his gaze. He was a small tom, one who often looked a little... sickly, but he walked with an importance in his step. "We have a visitor?" the orange tom meowed, glancing at Howlingheart.
The older of the two toms nodded. "She was hanging out in the middle of the territory, so I thought it would be good to at least get her into some shade," he explained, his gaze shifting between the two others.
Foxstar nodded, before letting his gaze move back to the kitten. He crouched down a little, getting at eye-level with the younger cat. "Hi there! I'm Foxstar! I'm the leader here. What's your name?" he asked, sounding genuinely friendly. In the past, the SummerClan leader had gotten flack for how welcoming he was to outsiders, but this time, he knew no one would question him. After all, who would let a kitten stay stranded?
Icekit was thankful for the guidance as to where she was going. This was strange territory for her, though she would likely find she would come to love and appreciate this clan. her ears perked up as she heard a new set of paws coming closer. She instinctively backed up towards Howlingheart.
She sat quietly as the two cats spoke but jumped and faced the leader when he spoke directly to her. She obviously couldn't see him. She puffed herself up as big as she could to show she was being brave. "I'm Icekit." She says with only a hint of worry in her mew.
"Howlingheart said he would make sure that someone would look out for my momma..." She says only a little sadly.
It was no secret that Foxstar loved kittens. They were all so cute! "Pleasure to meet ya, Icekit," he mewed. "No need to be worried, you're in as good of paws as any." Foxstar let his gaze drift over to the tom who had become somewhat of a surrogate father figure for him, too. He then turned back to the kitten, nodding in thought. "Right. Well, I've got some time, so I'll take the first shift," he announced with a warm smile. He, too, was perhaps too helpful for his own good. "Tell Sunny to man the fort whilest I'm gone," he then instructed Howlingheart. "It was nice meetin' ya, kiddo, and if your mama comes back, you'll be the first to know," he then assured, scruffing up her forehead fur with his tail like an older brother might. "I'll have the first cat I come across bring you a meal, alright?" Then, the leader was off.
Howlingheart nodded along after Foxstar, before pulling the kitten forward again. They crossed the short distance to the medicine cat's den, and Howlingheart shuffled her in gently. "This is Sunveins' den," he meowed to her. "It's where we keep all of our medical supplies. She and Cypresspaw live here, so don't be surprised if they come in. She's the medicine cat, and he's her apprentice. Here, why don't you sit down?"
Howlingheart turned to the stores towards the back of the den. It hadn't been more than four moons since he permanently moved out of the den, and he was still in the stores often after his herb patrols. The collection of herbs from the stores was still natural to him. He hummed along as he looked, before returning over to her side with several different herbs that he dropped gently onto the ground.
"How's your body feeling? Does anything hurt?" he then asked.
She gave a mewl of thanks to the tom. He seemed just as nice as Howlingheart, if not more so. Once she was in the shade of the den they felt immediate relief from the suns rays. She flopped down when he said to sit, exhausted from the heat.
"my head hurts a little and very tired..." She says. She could smell the herbs he had dropped in front of her. "What are those? They smell icky." She lifts her head up to sniff them and let out a sound of disapproval.
"Im hungry too... Momma said hunting was hard with us. I could eat an entire badger." She huffs gently. Just like a Kit to say whatever is on their mind.
"They're herbs. They can taste a little yucky sometimes, but they'll help you increase your strength," he meowed. A garden-keeper through and through (before his eventual promotions), Howlingheart had been a near expert on herbs for most of his life at this point. "Let me grab one more thing," he then meowed, disappearing again to the back for a moment.
"In front of you, there is a combination of four herbs. The first is feverfew. Like its name suggests, it is primarily used for fevers, but it can also help with some head pain. Lavender will help keep you calm. Chamomile will do similar work, but it will also increase your strength. And this last one, celadine. I don't use it often, and I'm not sure it'll work, but I want to give it a try. Are you able to see anything at all?" he asked, trying to have the question come out as gently as possible.
"Oh, of course," he then meowed. "Hold that thought." Within a few moments, Howlingheart had returned with a rabbit. It was rather large, but whatever the kitten wouldn't eat, he could share with Sunveins when she returned. "Alright, now where were we? Oh, right, the herbs."
She sniffs the herbs as he says what they are, though she couldnt place which ones he was talking about at that moment. At first they all smelled like grass, but as she sniffed she could actually tell that they smelled different.
Though the moment he came back into the den with the rabbit, that is all she could smell. She chewed the herbs that she had been given, then she pulls her feet under her body and crawls over to the rabbit and ate what she could. It wasn't much but it was a lot for her.
"Define seeing because i don't..." She tries to think of the words she needs. "All I know is what i've known forever." She licks her chops some, settling back down.
"I'll move this over here, if you want more, please, help yourself," he meowed after she stopped, moving it slightly off to the side so that it was out of the way. She had eaten just about as much as he had expected; he and Sunvein's would certainly have enough for later when he updated the medicine cat about the situation.
He then turned back to her, his head tilted to the side slightly. How would he define seeing? He wasn't entirely sure; she was the first cat he'd met whose eye difficulties were genetic. The only other cat he had ever met with even partial had been Aspenstar, the former leader of NightClan, during their colonization of SummerClan. Her's, though, was because of an injury. He blinked a few times, before settling on a follow up question.
"Can you tell me what color my eyes are?" If she was only partially blind, she'd probably be able to tell that he was orange; after all, not only was he orange, but he was big and orange. In comparison, his eyes, silver like most of the rest of his family, were small. It was as good of a start as any, he thought.
She shook her head. "I dont know what colour anything is." She admits. She was just now starting to realize that she was not like regular cats. But who is to tell her that she wont be useful. She could figure that much out later.
Howlingheart let out a soft sigh, a frown on her face. A deep line creased through his forehead as his brow furrowed at the realization. If Icekit was fully blind, or nearly fully blind, the chance that her mother was going to come back dropped exponentially. It was probably for the best, a little part of him whispered. After all, it was much easier to raise a kitten with particular needs in a clan than on your own, especially if you had other little ones to take care of. Here, Icekit would be fully supported and all of her needs would be met.
"That's okay," he meowed, his tone soft. "The celadine probably won't help much, then, but it certainly won't hurt," he hummed, the comment on the herb made more to himself than to her. He then rose to his paws. "There's a cat here, his name is Shadedsun, he also can't see. If you end up staying here longer, I'm sure you'll get a chance to meet him. Last I knew, he was still in the nursery, but I'm not sure that's still the case, being that the kits are apprentices now." Howlingheart let out a chuckle, realizing that Icekit probably didn't know what any of that meant. "Speaking of nursery, I could show you it, if you'd like. It's where you'll end up sleeping if you stay overnight, and maybe some of the other kittens will be in and you can meet some of them? As long as you're up to it, that is. We can stay in here if you'd rather."
Icekit blinked her eyes as if to see if anything would change but it didnt. her ears tipped back in annoyance but then she flicked them back up when he mentioned another cat like her. In this place even. Maybe this place wouldnt be so bad. Even if her Mother never showed herself again. She would miss her deeply but she couldnt dwell on that right now. Now she had to focus on what was happening.
She sat up and bumbled over to where Howlingheart's voice was coming from. "How far is the nursery?" She asks Curiously.
