An early Greenleaf morning sun shone down on Ravenmask as he waited for his apprentices to arrive for training at the training hollow. His mind wandered back to recent days when he and Bubblechaser lived in the lighthouse at the beach. Things didn't work out because of Sunstar's disappearance so they were moved back to the camp. He wondered about their former leader and hoped she was alright. Then turning his thoughts back to the present, he finalized his plans for the day with Sunrisepaw and Monsterpaw. He was concerned about how little they got along and hoped they would learn to at least tolerate each other.
Sunrisepaw blinked a few times as she padded up to the training hollow. She gave herself one last glance over- she couldn't have a single fur out of place. After licking her chest once, she let out a soft sigh. This would be a big day. It was her first formal training session, and the first chance she got to demonstrate that she was better in all ways, shapes, and forms than her partner was. She also had to make sure that Ravenmask liked her more. That didn't seem to be hard, she thought briefly back to their interaction the night before. He was kind, perhaps too kind for his own good, and Sunrisepaw was a snake ready to slither right into his heart. It was time to be perfect, innocent Sunrisepaw, the exact opposite of the borderline sociopath that the apprentices were slowly learning her to be.
She entered the training hollow with a delicate smile painted on her face. When she saw Ravenmask, she trotted over, offering him a respectful dip of her head. She then scanned the clearing to make sure she had been the first to arrive. Of course she had. Leave it to Monsterpaw to be late. A little bit of self-satisfaction in her eyes, the looked back to her mentor. "Good morning!" she purred. "I'm just so excited to learn today! I've been waiting for this moment for, basically, my whole life," she meowed, her whiskers twitching wiith the excitement of an apprentice whose day had yet to be ruined.
Dragging himself out of his nest on the first day of training had been the most difficult thing he had ever done in his life, Monsterpaw decided. He had been so excited to become an apprentice, to leave the nursery behind and fill his life with something exciting, but Foxstar paired him with Sunrisepaw — his sworn enemy, as he called her, and the most annoying cat in existence — and all his dreams came crashing down the moment the name left his mouth. To say he was bitter would be an understatement. He was furious, he was upset, he was peeved and annoyed and every synonym of it. Partially, he was disappointed. He wanted his apprenticeship to be cool, but the presence of his enemy acted like a dam, keeping all the good feelings on one side and leaving him with a distasteful, bitter attitude.
Monsterpaw walked, painfully slow and nonchalant, immediately signalling that he didn’t care in the slightest. He knew nothing of Ravenmask other than the fact that, in his mind, he was old and had lived in the lighthouse (which was only a little cool, Monsterpaw could admit), but he had looked nice at the ceremony. He hoped his mentor wasn’t lame either, as that would change his apprenticeship from major disappointment to living hell. Sunrisepaw — he gagged — was already there, chirping whatever suck-up words she could find in her cold little heart and spouting them at Ravenmask.
Stopping at the edge of the hollow, he hung back, shoulders tensed and tail flicking as his eyes narrowed at Sunrisepaw. He took a step closer but no more, starting his words with a huff of annoyance, “what are we supposed to be doing?” His fur was a mess, because he certainly didn't care about appearances like Sunrisepaw did — he qas quite the opposite, messy and uncaring, mean and harsh.

Ravenmask was pleased to see Sunrisepaw eager to start her training. He smiled inwardly at her comment about her 'whole life'. It really had been her whole life since she was now six moons old. "I'm glad to hear you're anxious to learn," he said cheerfully. "Willing apprentices are usually quick learners."
At that moment he heard another noise and looked up to see Monsterpaw arrive. His demeanor reminded him of the animosity the two shared towards each other. It was for that reason he had decided to start their training off with hunting techniques instead of battle moves. One of the last things he wanted was their training session becoming a full blown war. Monsterpaw's comment ruffled his fur but he refused to let it show.
"Monsterpaw, welcome," he meowed, rising to his feet. "Today I'm going to show you two some basic hunting tactics that you can incorporate into stalking just about any type of prey. And with this being the start of Greenleaf, now is the perfect time to learn since the prey is running at its best."
"Oh, I hope I am!" She beamed, her disposition no less than sunny this morning. Perhaps it was the smugness that she felt like she'd already proved she was the better apprentice of the two, being that she was on time and seemed to be getting along with their mentor "It'd be probably pretty disappointing if I wasn't," she then meowed with a bashful laugh. She had a family name to live up to. Not that she doubted she'd be able to; she was perfectly confident that she'd make her dad, Devotedcrow, proud.
It was then that she heard the other cat approach, and her demeanor shifted slightly. If a cat would have been watching her closely, they would have noticed that her entire body tensed slightly, but she was trying her best not to let him ruin her day. She had to be on her best behavior, which meant that she couldn't purposely antagonize him (although she desperately wanted to tell him to try taking a bath some time). When he responded to Ravenmask, she frowned slightly. Monsterpaw really was a big idiot if he thought that was the best way to go about training.
When Ravenmask began to speak again, Sunrisepaw nodded along eagerly, her expression changing back to a smile, although she still looked slightly bothered despite her best efforts. She was the smaller of the two apprentices, so hunting would probably be something she'd be better at than him. Not that she wasn't going to be better at everything than him. "That's a good idea!" she meowed. "I bet by the end of our session you'll have taught us to be the best hunters we can be," she continued with a slight giggle.
He fixed his eyes on Ravenmask, stepping closer until he was in front of him, taking extra consideration to distance himself from Sunrisepaw. Hunting tactics? He almost groaned — of course they would start with the boring stuff first, but (surprisingly) he said nothing of it. If it was boring, it was easy, and surely he could stick it in her face just how much better at hunting he was than her. She didn't know what she was doing, not like him, and the fakeness of her words proved it to him — she was covering up her inability with amiability, hoping to worm her way into their mentor's heart instead of working to earn his respect. He could see through her little games. He didn't understand how anyone liked her — though he assumed it was linked to her family ties, as if it made up for her dreadfulness.
Monsterpaw squinted at her.
I bet by the end of our session you'll have taught us to be the best hunters we can be. This time he didn't hold it back, letting out a long, annoyed sound, though it was quiet, and moved to stand beside his detestable companion. "Can you suck up any more?" He whisper-hissed, low and venomous, "you know being an apprentice is more than just stupid-sweet words, right?" He moved away quickly.

"I'm going to try," Ravenmask meowed with a smile while moving to the middle of the clearing. Teaching Sunrisepaw will be rewarding, he thought. Then he heard Monsterpaw say something but couldn't quite make out what he said. So he looked back at the younger tom who was already walking away from Sunrisepaw. Must not have been important.
"Three most important things to keep in mind while hunting is to be completely silent, unseen, and downwind from your prey. If they can't hear, see, or smell you, that's half the battle. One crunched leaf, one flash of fur, or one whiff of your scent will send your intended prey scurrying for safety." He walked around the apprentices visually inspecting them. Then easily slipping into a hunter's crouch, he continued. "This is a proper hunting crouch. It's the key to your hunting prowess. It keeps you low and less visible and prepares your leg muscles for your killing pounce." He moved forward a few paces then smoothly pounced on a leaf. Then hooking it on one claw, he held the dangling leaf up. "Anyone hungry?" he joked.
"Now I'd like to see both of your hunter's couches."
