Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Whether or not Kier subconsciously knew that he was lying right beside him in his nest, Sparklepaw wasn't sure--but he would sure find out soon. He watched the NightClan leader's chest rise and fall softly in the dim evening light of Kier's den, eyelids fluttering in a manner that suggested he would awaken soon. Sparklepaw was an impatient little boy, and found that he simply could not wait any longer to deliver Kier the good news. He tapped the other tom with a paw softly on the belly, and breathed into his ear. "Wakey wakey..."
Kier very rarely slept alone, so he was used to the feeling of someone else’s warmth beside him; was used to the sound of someone else’s breathing, someone else’s twitches and wriggling. Of course, he was most used to his mate. And Eris had a very specific way of breathing — more than that, she definitely wasn’t as eerily still as this. But Kier was still too drowsy, too relaxed, to be truly wary, so when he felt the paw on him and the warm breath ruffling over his ear, he instinctively let out a little hum, melting closer, his nose brushing over the other cat’s with a half-conscious smile. He slowly, softly began to blink open his eyes, waiting for them to adjust in the half-light and still expecting the figure close beside him to be a brown tabby. This could have ended very differently if Kier hadn’t happened to open his eyes, given how Kier often liked to wake up.
But he did, and immediately — with a pair of huge, too-close green eyes staring back at him — he scrambled back so drastically that he accidentally pushed himself over the edge of the mound of rock his nest lay on; it was, surprisingly, the first time it had ever happened, and for a few seconds he dangled by his claws from the lip of rock, eyes wide and terrified, startled from being woken so suddenly in such a way. Then, he lost his grip and fell into the water below, letting out a frantic sound. Resurfacing a moment later, spluttering, he paddled over and dragged himself out, regaining some of his usual personality. “SPARKLEPAW,” he shouted, now sopping wet and looking pitifully angry. His ears burned with humiliation. “What are you doing here?” He marched up the curving stone path to rejoin him, leaving a trail of water behind him. “I thought you perished when the volcano erupted. And—“ He suddenly looked around; the nest was empty aside from him, “where’s my mate?” What have you done with her? was the unspoken meaning. “Does she know you’re in here? How did you get in here?” He didn’t sound angry — he never did with Sparklepaw, despite currently being freezing cold and dripping wet in front of him. He just sounded exasperatedly bewildered.
Sparklepaw gave Kier a big toothy grin. "What is this, Twenty Questions?" he laughed. "Because I sure would love to play a round with you sometime, bestie! But, um, anyway, the answers..." Sparklepaw furrowed his brow. "I'm here to see you and also join your Clan maybe, I didn't do anything to your mate that I didn't know you had but I did see a she-cat walking off with a tom that looked a bit like a frog, I got in here through the entrance, and also...um, what volcano?" He moved forwards to give Kier a big ol' Sparklepaw hug, but cringed when his fur touched the other tom's. "Eww, you're all cold and wet! I'll hug you later. Expect it fondly, bestie!"
It was almost sad — Kier and Sparklepaw were the same age, and ignoring the fact that Sparklepaw was long overdue to become a warrior because he had failed his assessment, and then kidnapped a kit on a whim and gotten in bad with his Clan, and then had that Clan blown up so there was no one to perform the ceremony, and then disappeared, that was more in line with the things Kier should have been doing. Not leading a Clan, not with the weight of the world on his shoulders — just doing whatever meaningless, youthful stuff Sparklepaw had been doing. It was almost a heart-aching tragedy, that Kier had had what amounted to his teenage years stolen by too-young ambition and tyranny and loss, grief, stress.
Except the tone would be wrong because this is a biyuu thread, so it wasn’t any of those things.
“Why did you capitalise Twenty Questions?” Kier asked quietly, dismally, uncomprehendingly, brows drawn together like he was already getting a pleading migraine, because Sparklepaw was the only one in the world Kier became the straight man to. He looked just as miserable as Sparklepaw went on, gazing at him like he was adding sorry event onto sorry event, his ears slightly fallen back. He winced and moved to lean back when Sparklepaw went in for a hug, raising his paw in disgust — but he was saved. I’ll hug you later. Expect it fondly, bestie! Kier gave a cringing grin, nodding just to appease him and putting his paw back down as Sparklepaw moved away. “When— when was the last time we saw each other? When we kidnapped the kit? I—“ He suddenly seemed to realise something, his eyes widening; he looked back to Sparklepaw from where his gaze had wandered away, a horrified gasp in his hushed, whispering voice, like no one else could be allowed to hear. “Did you remember to take her back out from the place we put her? Because I didn’t. Is she still in there? Is she dead? And what—“ He shook his head, like there were too many questions to ask. “And what happened after that? To you? How do you not know your entire territory was razed to the ground? And aren’t you well overdue for your graduation? Are you still Sparklepaw?” There were very many things Kier was willing to ignore about Sparklepaw, like the fact he had someone gotten past all his guards to infiltrate NightClan, and the fact that Eris was off with Frogsmile (?) — but this was too much. “Not that I’m not exceedingly happy to see you,” he added quickly, and it was genuine. “I’ve…” Missed you faltered away and died on his tongue, his top teeth still digging into his lip from the ‘I’ve’ sound. He wasn’t good at things like that, at saying things about his feelings. “It’s not a burden you’re here,” he amended at last, too full to mean just that.
