Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Wy didn’t intend to run into her today, but the moment he turned the corner and spotted Oceaneyes, he knew what he had to do.
“Excuse me, Oceanstar?” he called. He jogged her way and bowed his head a little in respect. He may be from the Regime but he had not started life there; first, he was a WaterClan warrior and even briefly a deputy. “Do you have a minute?”
Her large blue eyes turned to face Wyverndelirium. The feline had been sitting next to Frostcry, conversing quietly with the tom about future plans. Her ears twitched curiously as she stopped talking, letting her eyes adjust to the darkness of the tunnels. "Yes?" She mewed, her tail brushing against Frostcry's side, showing they would continue their conversation later.
Frostcry glanced between the pair with a covert frown. Reluctant to abandon their conversation, he considered staying exactly where he was, but her dismissal had been clear enough. There was no point in pushing her now. Instead, he ducked his head and murmured a farewell, then took his leave toward the sun.
Wy waited for the other tom to take his departure before he began. "I was a clan cat once, many moons ago," he told her. He had a slow, deliberate pace to his speech, like he chewing on each word and its implications before it ever left his mouth. "I enjoyed that life, but when it came to an end, I ended up here. The Regime is a good place, full of good cats. I mean them no slight." He paused to look at her with thoughtful eyes. "But I miss the life of a clan, and if you'd have me, I would like to join yours when you leave."
In reality, she had expected this. Oceaneyes was a very observative cat. She'd watched how Wyvern had managed to get closer to the other SunClan cats. How he seemed to fit in better than he did with the tunnel cats. She could see the longing in him, only perhaps because she had watched carefully.
A small smile spread along her lips and she gave a nod. "SunClan would be honored to have you as a warrior, as long as you promise us your loyalty from here on out." A pause, smile fading and a serious note entering her tone. "I know you have not always been apart of one group. I do not know your entire history, Wyvern, but I will let you know that I will not tolerate a waver in where your heart lies. If I allow you to become a part of our clan, we expect that you will treat us as your home, just as we will treat you as our clanmate and family. I want you to know that once you are with us, we will see to it that when you eventually become an elder, you will be cared for with the highest of cares. SunClan will never forget those who have been there as warriors. Can you promise that?"
The tension in his shoulders eased at her initial statement. He was in. Relief and joy swam inside of him, but as he opened his mouth to thank her, she continued. Like a flame underwater, the light in him was diminished, and he closed his eyes.
"I understand," Wy murmured. She had every right not to trust him. SunClan would mark the fifth clan that Wy had lived within, and though he believed all of his moves had been for sensible reasons, he understood how it came across when he alone was privy to all the details. He needed to explain himself, but he dreaded her reaction if he did so; would she still want him, knowing just how flighty he had been? He already knew the answer. He dreaded meeting her eyes, afraid of the hatred that would blossom there.
He opened his eyes and looked back at her, his hazy gaze steady on hers. "Oceanstar, I swear I will stay with SunClan and defend us without hesitation. My former clans are in the past, and I owe them no loyalty now." But he pushed on: "My family lives on in SwiftClan. SunClan is my home, I have no desire to go rejoin them, but I must warn you: if it comes to a fight, I don't know that I can raise a claw against my family."
Oceaneyes held his gaze. Silence passed as she considered his words thoughtfully. This would be a big decision as a leader, to let an outsider join their clan. They would have to trust him, and should he betray them, it would cost not only her clan... but also her reputation and respect as their leader. It was a gamble, really.
Finally, she gave a small nod. "Let us hope that it should never come to such a thing. I do hope to keep SunClan in peace, for my lifetime." She told him.
He bowed his head to hide the smile that broken out over his face, his composure slipping under a flood of joy. He was in. "I am glad to hear that," he replied, and it was true. Wy had seen enough war in his lifetime and though he accepted it was a part of clan life, it was not something he wanted to embrace going forward. He had survived every battle he participated in thus far, but it was a close call several times.
He was content to leave it at that, but then another thought struck him, and he paused. "Will I be taking a warrior's name again?" It had been a while since Wy had a longer name to remember.
That was, a good question. It continued Oceaneyes' silence for a few moments. Finally, she rolled her shoulders in a slow shrug. "I suppose that is your choice. I will not force a clan name on any cat."
He expected to feel relief. Instead, his heart sank a little. "That is kind of you," he murmured, but he was troubled. Should he keep his current name, so light and easy on the tongue? Should he take his old name again, and all the burdens that came with it? Or should he find a new name to wear, something to aspire toward?
It was not hard to see the disappointment that was present on his features. Oceaneyes couldn't help but tip her head to the side slightly. "If you would like a new name, a fresh start, a new identity... I would not deny that either."
It was a good idea, he thought, but now he was hesitant again. When she said it.... "I don't want to hide who I am," he told her, worried she would misunderstand his intentions. "I will not hide my mistakes."
Wy did not answer her. He stretched out his muzzle toward the sky and gazed at it wordlessly. What name could he take? Any new name felt like a lie, an excuse, a guide to hide behind. Wy was a good nickname but he did not think it suitable to reject a clan name when all he wanted was to blend in. His old name represented his old self and all of his old crimes he could not wake away from. It was a reminder and it was his penance.
