"Much better," Dustfeather replied after inspecting Ghostpaw. "Just keep your belly fur from brushing the ground if you move forward. Any little sound will alert your prey that you're there." He took a step back. "Let's see you stalk. Pretend that leaf over there is a squirrel and move as quietly as you can toward it."

He flicked an ear towards his mentor as acknowledgement and raised himself up slightly, taking note of Dustfeather's words. Carefully, he took a slow and intentional step forward, creeping forward slowly but surely one paw at a time. It took forever and he felt a bit slow, stupid, and awkward doing it but finally he was close enough to pounce on the leaf. Unfortunately, he had not paid attention to the twig which snapped under his paw as he leaped, grasping the leaf in his jaws with a muffled "oops."

"Not bad for a first try," Dustfeather meowed encouragingly. "It will get easier as you do it. All you need is practice. Go ahead and do it again." He recalled his first day training as an apprentice and remembered how awkward he felt but now crouching and stalking was second nature to him.

"Okay." He meowed, a bit embarrassed. He felt kind of awkward and foolish before the warrior but he knew that Dustfeather was right. Practice. He just needed to practice, practice, practice. Again, he crouched with his limbs at a similar angle tail down, belly up. The silver tabby found a new leaf nearby and stalked it slowly, leaping just a fraction too late and jumping over it but spinning around to catch it under his paw. "Oops."

"Again not bad for a beginner," the gray tabby meowed. "I'm thinking that maybe you might do even better if it was real prey you're stalking. How about we find another squirrel for you to catch?" He knew there was no harm in trying, besides how fast can a leaf run? Not much sport in that. The worst that could happen would be a missed catch.

"Okay!" He agreed cheerfully with a grin. He had to agree, catching a squirrel sounded way more exciting than chasing a dead leaf around. "Where should we look for squirrels?" He asked, blinking up at the warrior.

"We should look farther in the oak grove," Dustfeather replied. "So let's keep moving forward. There's no more squirrels around here. Remember to keep your ears, eyes, and nose open for any signs of prey." He picked up the squirrel he had caught and started to walk.

(Sorry, I was out of town and then I was extremely sick last week. I am back and almost back up to full health!)
"Okay," He acknowledged his mentor, whiskers twitching to affirm his words. Were they just looking for squirrels? What if he came across a mouse? He decided to hold his tongue and instead kept his eyes and ears peeled for nearby squirrels. It wasn't long before he spotted a flash of brown in the underbrush nearby. Immediately, he ducked into a crouch similar to the one he had learned earlier and raised his nose to sniff the air. He could sort of detect some squirrel but he wasn't entirely sure and he glanced back at Dustfeather for confirmation.

(So sorry to hear you were ill. I'm glad your doing better!)
Dustfeather nodded his head in affirmation to Ghostpaw's unspoken question. He wore a reassuring smile on his face to bolster the apprentice's confidence. Then he gestured with his tail for the Ghostpaw to continue.

(Thank you! Now allergy season is rolling in so there's that but overall I'm feeling better c:)
Having received the affirmation and reassurance he needed, Ghostpaw's head swiveled back to focus on his target. Crouched like Dustfeather had showed him, he stalked forward slowly and quietly to approach the creature and his ears were perked for sounds. It took a few moments of stalking before he say it's gray body among the roots of a tree and he watched and waited, unsure of when to leap. Further away, closer? He couldn't say for certain so he just leaped when it felt right, only to land on some abandoned nuts and the squirrel was long gone. "Fox dung!" He whispered, sitting up with clear disappointment on his face.

Dustfeather watched the squirrel skitter away just as Ghostpaw leaped. He walked up to his apprentice feeling his disappointment. "It wasn't a bad try," he meowed. "Next time get a little bit closer before you leap. The extra time your attack took gave the squirrel the split second it needed to make it's escape. Just keep this in mind next time." He hoped he had encouraged the apprentice. "You'll get it the more you practice."

He felt a bit better at the older cats words and reassurances and nodded. "Okay. I'll definitely practice on my own too!" He was afraid of getting behind the other apprentices or being a bad warrior. He wouldn't be, right? Dustfeather was a great warrior and he was afraid to disappoint the older cat or either of his parents.

"That's good," Dustfeather replied, please at Ghostpaw's eagerness to learn. "So, how about we look for another squirrel to catch." He smiled broadly as he looked out among the oak trees. He caught sight of some movement in a tree further away. He kept staring until he saw a small gray squirrel drop down to the ground and scurry over to some acorns. "Look, over there," he whispered to Ghostpaw. "Go on and remember what I've told you."
