A gentle snow fell softly down on Dustfeather as he waited at the camp entrance for Ghostpaw to arrive for the start of his training. There was an inch of freshly fallen snow already on the ground and the skies looked like they promised there was more to come. As he waited, the gray tabby warrior was deciding on a route to take through the territory that would lead to some good hunting spots. It would be nice when Newleaf comes back, he thought as he whisked away some snow flakes that were sticking to his fur. But for now they had to get through Leafbare.

Ghostpaw practically came barreling out of the apprentices den. If nothing else, the newly named apprentice had nothing but overflowing energy. It was strange sleeping in a new den, but he hadn't been able to do much but restless dozing for most of the night. He was far too excited for training and worried that he might accidentally be late and keep Dustfeather waiting. "I'm here!" He called out, skidding in the dirt to avoid running into the warrior.

The gray tabby warrior looked up when he heard Ghostpaw's rapid arrival. "So I see," he meowed smiling. "You look ready to start your training. I'm going to show you around some today and hopefully start your hunting training. It's important to keep the fresh kill pile stocked, especially during Leafbare."
(Congrats on your promotion! )

(Thank you!
The silver tabby still fluffy with patches of kit fur nodded vigorously that he understood. He was very focused on his mentor and ready to explore the territory and bring back his first kill. "Yes, Dustfeather!" He chimed almost as if he had been programmed. Ghostpaw could be snarky and smart but he was also eager to start and finish his training with caused him to be more obedient than was typical.

"Well then, follow me," The gray tabby warrior meowed as he walked out of the camp. The first place he led Ghostpaw was the stream near the camp. "This is where we get our water. This far up the stream usually doesn't have fish but where it meets the main stream it has some." He went over to some stones that stuck up out of the water and hoped gingerly across. "It's not hard," he told the apprentice. "Just watch your step. The water's only paw deep here but if you get wet, you'll be chilled to the bone."

Ghostpaw nodded seriously as he stepped to the bank of the shallow water. He looked down at the gently flowing stream and shivered as he imagined his paws falling into its icy depths. He looked back up and followed his mentor carefully across the stones, stopping and judging the distance carefully for each one.

Turning his paws to the west, Dustfeather began to follow the stream downstream. "This is the way to the main stream that cuts through our territory," he informed Ghostpaw. "There's two crossings over the main stream if you don't want to get wet. The stepping stones are to the north and the log bridge is to the south. The other side of that stream is the rabbit meadow. Are you keeping up okay?" He looked back at his apprentice to make sure.

( Thanks! I use the maps a lot lol )
Ghostpaw nodded enthusiastically. No way was he going to fall behind on his very first day! He would be very disappointed in himself if he let that happen. "Yes, Dustfeather."

"Good!" Dustfeather purred, happy to have such an eager apprentice. It wasn't long until he saw the mouth of the small stream entering the main stream. The stream was wider and deeper than the one they had just followed and it was bubbling and gurgling as it made it's way to the lake. The newly fallen snow was about paw deep, the tops of the blades of grass still poking through. He gave his fur a good shake to remove the snow that was gathering on his back. "Well, here's the main stream," he told Ghostpaw. "A lot of good fishing can be found here. And across over there," he continued, waving his tail to a vast meadow, "is the rabbit meadow. That's my favorite place to hunt."

Every time Dustfeather directed his attention to something knew, the small silver tabby turned his entire body to look and take in every detail. It was like writing a map in his brain and he wanted to remember everything. He didn't want to let down the warrior or his clan so it was important to store all of this information. "Are you going to teach me to hunt rabbits too?" He asked, eyes sparkling with excitement at the thought.

"Of course but not today," Dustfeather meowed with a smile. He was glad Ghostpaw was so eager to learn. "Hunting rabbits is a bit more advanced. I thought we'd start with something a little smaller." He began to walk toward the north with the stream on his left. "There's a grove of oak trees up ahead and where you find oaks you're bound to find squirrels. Normally I'd start your training off by hunting mice but I seriously doubt there'll be any out in this weather."

"Then the mice are the smart ones then, I hate the cold." A cool breeze swept by at that moment and he shivered, puffing out his fur as far as it would go. He would definitely catch these stupid squirrels who could not even figure out that there were hungry cats lurking out and about.

"Are you saying that the mice are smarter than you?" the gray tabby tom teased as he playfully flicked Ghostpaw's ear with his tail tip. "Well, cheer up because we're in the last moon of Leafbare. Warmer weather will be coming soon." As he neared the oak grove, he slowed his pace then stopped. "Do you see that gray squirrel over there?" Not waiting for a reply he continued. "Stay here and watch what I do."

Before he left the apprentice, Dustfeather wanted to impart a few quick lessons. "First thing to know about hunting anything is the basic hunter's crouch," he meowed. "This is it." He got into his crouch then began moving forward. "Learning to be light on your paws is the second thing." Then he moved off stealthily toward the squirrel who was busily inspecting some nuts on the ground. Using the ground cover to his advantage, the gray tabby warrior got within striking range fairly quickly. After making one final check of his surroundings, he leaped up and landed neatly on the unsuspecting squirrel. He bit it's throat, killing it before it could squeal out an alarm. Rising to full stature, he brought the squirrel back to where Ghostpaw was waiting.

Ghostpaw's eyes shone with curiosity as he watched and then filled with awe and pride as Dustfeather dealt the killing blow. That was his mentor and he was proud to be the warrior's apprentice. "Wow! That. was. awesome!" He whispered enthusiastically, standing up where he had been crouching to imitate his mentor the entire time. "That squirrel had no idea it was even coming. Can I try next?" He asked with excitement, silver tabby tail lashing through the air behind him.

"Sure!" Dustfeather meowed as he brought his catch over to where Ghostpaw was. "First, while we're still here, you can practice your crouching and stalking techniques. When you're ready will move father into the oak grove where we can find some more squirrels." He knew there would be no squirrels around where they're at now because of his catch. "Let's see your hunter's crouch."

"Okay!" He replied a bit over enthusiastically before dropping into an awkward and slightly unstable crouch. His knees were bent at an odd angle, his belly fur brushed the ground, and his tail stuck up high in the air but he did not notice any of them. "Like this?" He asked uncertainly, shuffling his forepaws a bit.
Post by Whitemuzzle on Feb 28, 2019 19:19:45 GMT -5
Dustfeather stiffed a chuckle at the apprentice's attempt. "Kind of," he meowed as he walked around Ghostpaw inspecting him. "But not quite. You need to be comfortable in your crouch so you can stay in it for long periods of time. Here like this." He slipped into his own hunter's crouch. "Bend your knees like this, keep your feet apart this far so you remain stable, and keep your tail straight out behind you so it doesn't drag or bump into anything." He straightened back up. "Okay, try it again."

Ghostpaw nodded and tried to do as he was told. Stable. Legs bent, tail out, feet apart... He felt better, it was less awkward this time. "Is this better?" He asked, belly fur brushing the ground. He still looked and felt a bit awkward but it seemed to have improved greatly, at least in his eyes.
